    Nanoscale Weibull Statistics

In this paper a modification of the classical Weibull Statistics is developed for nanoscale applications. It is called Nanoscale Weibull Statistics. A comparison between Nanoscale and classical Weibull Statistics applied to experimental results on fracture strength of carbon nanotubes clearly shows the effectiveness of the proposed modification. A Weibull's modulus around 3 is, for the first time, deduced for nanotubes. The approach can treat (also) a small number of structural defects, as required for nearly defect free structures (e.g., nanotubes) as well as a quantized crack propagation (e.g., as a consequence of the discrete nature of matter), allowing to remove the paradoxes caused by the presence of stress-intensifications

Prescribed pattern transformation in swelling gel tubes by elastic instability

We present a study on swelling-induced circumferential buckling of tubular shaped gels. Inhomogeneous stress develops as gel swells under mechanical constraints, which gives rise to spontaneous buckling instability without external force. Full control over the post-buckling pattern is experimentally demonstrated. A simple analytical model is developed using elastic energy to predict stability and post-buckling patterns upon swelling. Analysis reveals that height to diameter ratio is the most critical design parameter to determine buckling pattern, which agrees well with experimental and numerical results.Comment: 32 pages, 7 figure

Production of (τ+τ)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b in electron positron collisions

(τ+τ)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b is an atom of simple hydrogenlike structure similar to positronium (e+e)b(e^+e^-)_b and (μ+μ)b(\mu^+\mu^-)_b. In this paper energy levels and decay widths of different decay channels of (τ+τ)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b are given. Cross section of production of this atomic system in e+ee^+e^- annihilation taking into account radiative corrections is calculated. According to our estimates 886 (τ+τ)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b atoms may be produced at BEPCII and 29 (τ+τ)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b atoms are produced at VEPP-4M under the present experimental conditions.Comment: 5 pages, submitted to Int. Plasmonic crystals for ultrafast nanophotonics: Optical switching of surface plasmon polaritons

We demonstrate that the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons in a periodically perforated gold film can be efficiently manipulated by femtosecond laser pulses with the wavelengths far from the intrinsic resonances of gold. Using a time- and frequency- resolved pump-probe technique we observe shifting of the plasmon polariton resonances with response times from 200 to 800 fs depending on the probe photon energy, through which we obtain comprehensive insight into the electron dynamics in gold. We show that Wood anomalies in the optical spectra provide pronounced resonances in differential transmission and reflection with magnitudes up to 3% for moderate pump fluences of 0.5 mJ/cm^2.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
