    Integrating Learning from Examples into the Search for Diagnostic Policies

    This paper studies the problem of learning diagnostic policies from training examples. A diagnostic policy is a complete description of the decision-making actions of a diagnostician (i.e., tests followed by a diagnostic decision) for all possible combinations of test results. An optimal diagnostic policy is one that minimizes the expected total cost, which is the sum of measurement costs and misdiagnosis costs. In most diagnostic settings, there is a tradeoff between these two kinds of costs. This paper formalizes diagnostic decision making as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). The paper introduces a new family of systematic search algorithms based on the AO* algorithm to solve this MDP. To make AO* efficient, the paper describes an admissible heuristic that enables AO* to prune large parts of the search space. The paper also introduces several greedy algorithms including some improvements over previously-published methods. The paper then addresses the question of learning diagnostic policies from examples. When the probabilities of diseases and test results are computed from training data, there is a great danger of overfitting. To reduce overfitting, regularizers are integrated into the search algorithms. Finally, the paper compares the proposed methods on five benchmark diagnostic data sets. The studies show that in most cases the systematic search methods produce better diagnostic policies than the greedy methods. In addition, the studies show that for training sets of realistic size, the systematic search algorithms are practical on todays desktop computers

    Quantum Interference Controls the Electron Spin Dynamics in n-GaAs

    Manifestations of quantum interference effects in macroscopic objects are rare. Weak localization is one of the few examples of such effects showing up in the electron transport through solid state. Here we show that weak localization becomes prominent also in optical spectroscopy via detection of the electron spin dynamics. In particular, we find that weak localization controls the free electron spin relaxation in semiconductors at low temperatures and weak magnetic fields by slowing it down by almost a factor of two in nn-doped GaAs in the metallic phase. The weak localization effect on the spin relaxation is suppressed by moderate magnetic fields of about 1 T, which destroy the interference of electron trajectories, and by increasing the temperature. The weak localization suppression causes an anomalous decrease of the longitudinal electron spin relaxation time T1T_1 with magnetic field, in stark contrast with well-known magnetic field induced increase in T1T_1. This is consistent with transport measurements which show the same variation of resistivity with magnetic field. Our discovery opens a vast playground to explore quantum magneto-transport effects optically in the spin dynamics.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Production of (τ+τ−)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b in electron positron collisions

    (τ+τ−)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b is an atom of simple hydrogenlike structure similar to positronium (e+e−)b(e^+e^-)_b and (μ+μ−)b(\mu^+\mu^-)_b. In this paper energy levels and decay widths of different decay channels of (τ+τ−)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b are given. Cross section of production of this atomic system in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation taking into account radiative corrections is calculated. According to our estimates 886 (τ+τ−)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b atoms may be produced at BEPCII and 29 (τ+τ−)b(\tau^+\tau^-)_b atoms are produced at VEPP-4M under the present experimental conditions.Comment: 5 pages, submitted to Int.     Electronic ground states of Fe2+_2^+ and Co2+_2^+ as determined by x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy

    The 6Π^6\Pi electronic ground state of the Co2+_2^+ diatomic molecular cation has been assigned experimentally by x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap. Three candidates, 6Φ^6\Phi, 8Φ^8\Phi, and 8Γ^8\Gamma, for the electronic ground state of Fe2+_2^+ have been identified. These states carry sizable orbital angular momenta that disagree with theoretical predictions from multireference configuration interaction and density functional theory. Our results show that the ground states of neutral and cationic diatomic molecules of 3d3d transition elements cannot generally be assumed to be connected by a one-electron process

    Challenges for wireless mesh networks to provide reliable carrier-grade services

    Provision of mobile and wireless services today within a competitive environment and driven by a huge amount of steadily emerging new services and applications is both challenge and chance for radio network operators. Deployment and operation of an infrastructure for mobile and wireless broadband connectivity generally requires planning effort and large investments. A promising approach to reduce expenses for radio access networking is offered by Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). Here traditional dedicated backhaul connections to each access point are replaced by wireless multi-hop links between neighbouring access nodes and few gateways to the backbone employing standard radio technology. Such a solution provides at the same time high flexibility in both deployment and the amount of offered capacity and shall reduce overall expenses. On the other hand currently available mesh solutions do not provide carrier grade service quality and reliability and often fail to cope with high traffic load. EU project CARMEN (CARrier grade MEsh Networks) was initiated to incorporate different heterogeneous technologies and new protocols to allow for reliable transmission over "best effort" radio channels, to support a reliable mobility and network management, self-configuration and dynamic resource usage, and thus to offer a permanent or temporary broadband access at high cost efficiency. The contribution provides an overview on preliminary project results with focus on main technical challenges from a research and implementation point of view. Especially impact of mesh topology on the overall system performance in terms of throughput and connection reliability and aspects of a dedicated hybrid mobility management solution will be discussed.European Community's Seventh Framework ProgramPublicad
