An infrared survey of brightest cluster galaxies: Paper I
We report on an imaging survey with the Spitzer Space Telescope of 62
brightest cluster galaxies with optical line emission. These galaxies are
located in the cores of X-ray luminous clusters selected from the ROSAT All-Sky
Survey. We find that about half of these sources have a sign of excess infrared
emission; 22 objects out of 62 are detected at 70 microns, 18 have 8 to 5.8
micron flux ratios above 1.0 and 28 have 24 to 8 micron flux ratios above 1.0.
Altogether 35 of 62 objects in our survey exhibit at least one of these signs
of infrared excess. Four galaxies with infrared excesses have a 4.5/3.6 micron
flux ratio indicating the presence of hot dust, and/or an unresolved nucleus at
8 microns. Three of these have high measured [OIII](5007A)/Hbeta flux ratios
suggesting that these four, Abell 1068, Abell 2146, and Zwicky 2089, and
R0821+07, host dusty active galactic nuclei (AGNs). 9 objects (including the
four hosting dusty AGNs) have infrared luminosities greater than 10^11 L_sol
and so can be classified as luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). Excluding the
four systems hosting dusty AGNs, the excess mid-infrared emission in the
remaining brightest cluster galaxies is likely related to star formation.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ
XMM-NEWTON Detection of X-ray Emission from the Compact Steep Spectrum Radio Galaxy 3C303.1
Using XMM we detect faint unresolved X-ray emission from the Compact Steep
Spectrum radio galaxy 3C303.1. We detect a thermal component at kT = 0.8 keV
which seems likely to be produced in the ISM of the host galaxy. There is
evidence for a second component in the spectrum whose nature is currently
ambiguous. Plausible hypotheses for the second component include (1) hot gas
shocked by the expansion of the radio source, and (2) Synchrotron self-Compton
emission from the southern radio lobe if the magnetic field is below the
equipartition value by a factor of about 3.5
Making sense of theory construction: Metaphor and disciplined imagination
This article draws upon Karl Weick’s insights into the nature of theorizing, and extends and refines his conception of theory construction as ‘disciplined imagination’. An essential ingredient in Weick’s ‘disciplined imagination’ involves his assertion that thought trials and theoretical representations typically involve a transfer from one epistemic sphere to another through the creative use of metaphor. The article follows up on this point and draws out how metaphor works, how processes of metaphorical imagination partake in theory construction, and how insightful metaphors and the theoretical representations that result from them can be selected. The paper also includes a discussion of metaphors-in-use (organizational improvisation as jazz and organizational behavior as collective mind) which Weick proposed in his own writings. The whole purpose of this exercise is to theoretically augment and ground the concept of ‘disciplined imagination’, and in particular to refine the nature of thought trials and selection within it. In doing so, we also aim to provide pointers for the use of metaphorical imagination in the process of theory construction
Price Discovery in the Foreign Currency Futures and Spot Market
In this paper, we compare price discovery in the foreign exchange futures and spot markets during a period in which the spot market was less transparent but had higher volume than the futures market. We develop a foreign exchange futures order flow measure that is a proxy for the order flow observed by Chicago Mercantile Exchange pit traders. We find that both foreign currency futures and spot order flow contain unique information relevant to exchange rate determination. When we measure contributions to price discovery using the methods of Hasbrouck (1995) and Gonzalo and Granger (1995), we obtain results consistent with our order flow findings. Taken together, our evidence suggests that the amount of information contained in currency futures prices in 1996 is much greater than one would expect based on relative market size. Using data from 2006, we obtain quite different results, perhaps because of an increase in spot market transparency. In particular, we find in our more recent sample that the spot market has the dominant information share
Advances in estrogen receptor biology: prospects for improvements in targeted breast cancer therapy
Estrogen receptor (ER) has a crucial role in normal breast development and is expressed in the most common breast cancer subtypes. Importantly, its expression is very highly predictive for response to endocrine therapy. Current endocrine therapies for ER-positive breast cancers target ER function at multiple levels. These include targeting the level of estrogen, blocking estrogen action at the ER, and decreasing ER levels. However, the ultimate effectiveness of therapy is limited by either intrinsic or acquired resistance. Identifying the factors and pathways responsible for sensitivity and resistance remains a challenge in improving the treatment of breast cancer. With a better understanding of coordinated action of ER, its coregulatory factors, and the influence of other intracellular signaling cascades, improvements in breast cancer therapy are emerging
The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite

Small worlds and board interlocking in Brazil: a longitudinal study of corporate networks, 1997-2007
Social Network Analysis (SNA) is an emerging research field in finance, above all in Brazil. This work is pioneering in that it is supported by reference to different areas of knowledge: social network analysis and corporate governance, for dealing with a similarly emerging topic in finance; interlocking boards, the purpose being to check the validity of the small-world model in the Brazilian capital market, and the existence of associations between the positioning of the firm in the network of corporate relationships and its worth. To do so official data relating to more than 400 companies listed in Brazil between 1997 and 2007 were used. The main results obtained suggest that the configuration of the networks of relationships between board members and companies reflects the small-world model. Furthermore, there seems to be a significant relationship between the firm’s centrality and its worth, described according to an “inverted U” curve, which suggests the existence of optimum values of social prominence in the corporate network
