How to Use Words Ending in -al or -ar and Their Related Forms

    Get PDF
This article contains a collection of certain words ending in -al or -ar which are used in the technical literature. The said words are presented irrespective of their origin and their related forms are obtained by attaching additional suffixes. The selected words can be found in The American Heritage® Dictionary (2006) at Dictionary.com (2012). The website also provides additional references, like the Collins English Dictionary (2009), for some rarely used related forms. The words ending in -al are shown in Table 1 and the words ending in -ar are shown in Table 2

How to Use Singular and Plural Forms (Part Two)

    Get PDF
This contribution is the second part of the article on how to use singular and plural forms initiated in the previous journal issue. The use of said forms is often context-dependent. The examples provided below are for nouns ending in -s. Some nouns with identical plural and singular forms (irregular plurals like series, species, etc.) can be: - singular (a series, a species); - plural/countable (different series, many species); - uncountable (Balmer series (physics), type species (biology), used in a particular sense). However, certain uncountable nouns require a singular verb such as: billiards, darts, dominoes, mumps, news, shingles. Also, certain plural nouns require a plural verb such as: arms, clothes, contents, customs, glasses, goods, groceries, jeans, means, outskirts, pants, pyjamas, scissors, spectacles, surroundings, thanks, tidings, trousers

How to Cite Patents and Trademarks

Patents Patents are cited by including the name(s) of the inventor(s), the year of issuing the patent, and the title of the patent. The name of the issuing institution at the time of issuing the patent, the patent number and the exact dates of the patent being filed, issued and eventually expired (optional) conclude the citation

    Graphene and Communications Technology

    Get PDF
The advances in communications technology depend on the development of tiny devices being capable of transmitting and receiving data at the highest possible data rates. The digital signal processing at gigabit-per-second rates is soon to be upgraded to the terabit-per-second range. Nanotechnology provides a variety of alternatives for the design of ultrafast nanoscale components. Graphene is one particular material which is considered for possible implementation due to its superior physical properties. This contribution is based on a selection of some foundation studies which explore the potential of graphene for emerging applications with an emphasis on communications technology

Optimization of Local Routing for Connected Nodes with Single Output Ports - Part I: Theory

    Get PDF
The optimization of packet flows in a set of cooperative nodes with single output ports is considered. A single output port relays a packet to a single connected node at a time. The different service time distributions to distinct connected nodes are considered in terms of multiclass queuing with a single first-come first-serve queue and a single server in each node. The analytic model is applied to cases of two, three and four connected nodes with M/M/1 queues relaying packets in a chosen direction. Analytical solutions for two connected nodes are obtained. The influence of other arbitrary packet flows is considered as background traffic. Directed links are used for local connectivity within the set of cooperative node
