The transverse aortic constriction heart failure animal model: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
The transverse aortic constriction (TAC) model is frequently used to study adverse cardiac remodeling upon pressure overload. We set out to define the most important characteristics that define the degree of cardiac remodeling in this model. A systematic review and meta-analyses were performed on studies using the TAC mouse/rat model and reporting echocardiographic outcome parameters. We included all animal studies in which a constriction around the transverse aorta and at least one of the predefined echocardiography or MRI outcome parameters were assessed. A total of 502 articles and > 3000 wild-type, untreated animals undergoing TAC were included in this study and referenced to a control group. The duration of aortic constriction correlated to the degree of adverse remodeling. However, the mouse data is strongly biased by the preferential use of male C57Bl/6 mice (66% of studies). Furthermore, mostly ketamine/xylazine anesthetics, 27G needle constriction, and silk sutures are used. Nonetheless, despite the homogeneity in experimental design, the model contained a substantial degree of heterogeneity in the functional outcome measures. When looking at study quality, only 12% reported randomization, 23% mentioned any sort of blinding, 25% adequately addressed the outcomes, and an amazingly low percentage (2%) showed sample size calculation. Meta-analyses did not detect specific study characteristics that explained the heterogeneity in the reported outcome measures, however this might be related to the strong bias towards the use of specific mouse lines, sex as well as age or to poor reporting of characteristics of study quality

Adaptive Impedance Matching Network for Contactless Power and Data Transfer in E-Textiles

    No full text
One of the major challenges associated with e-textiles is the connection between flexible fabric-integrated wires and rigid electronics. This work aims to increase the user experience and mechanical reliability of these connections by foregoing conventional galvanic connections in favor of inductively coupled coils. The new design allows for some movement between the electronics and the wires, and it relieves the mechanical strain. Two pairs of coupled coils continuously transmit power and bidirectional data across two air gaps of a few millimeters. A detailed analysis of this double inductive link and associated compensation network is presented, and the sensitivity of the network to changing conditions is explored. A proof of principle is built that demonstrates the system’s ability to self-tune based on the current–voltage phase relation. A demonstration combining 8.5 kbit/s of data transfer with a power output of 62 mW DC is presented, and the hardware is shown to support data rates of up to 240 kbit/s. This is a significant improvement of the performance of previously presented designs.</p

A novel sweat rate and conductivity sensor patch made with low-cost fabrication techniques

    No full text
Sweat sensor patches offer new opportunities for unobtrusive monitoring of an athlete’s physical status. This paper presents a novel sweat rate and sweat conductivity patch that is easy to prototype and can be made with common low-cost production techniques: laser cutting and standard printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing. The device consists of a patch made from hydrophilic PET foil, a double-sided adhesive and a thin PCB with gold electrodes. Two electrodes, which are continuously in contact with the inflowing fluid, measure the sweat conductivity and a separate system with interdigitated electrodes measures the filling process of the reservoirs. Impedance measurement results of both systems demonstrate the working of the concept

Microfluidic device for carrying out a reaction

    No full text
A device for carrying out a reaction, which device comprises a wafer provided with a group of at least two wells. The wells are thermally separate from each other by means of a groove in a layer of the device, while parts separated by the groove are locally connected by bridges. In this way a device is provided combining great mechanical strength with good thermal insulation.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

A wearable fluidic collection patch and ion chromatography method for sweat electrolyte monitoring during exercise

    No full text
This paper presents a method to continuously collect and reliably measure sweat analyte concentrations during exercise. The method can be used to validate newly developed sweat sensors and to obtain insight into intraindividual variations of sweat analytes in athletes. First, a novel design of a sweat collection system is created. The sweat collection patch, that is made from hydrophilized foil and a double-sided acrylate adhesive, consists of a reservoir array that collects samples consecutively in time. During a physiological experiment, sweat can be collected from the back of a participant and the filling speed of the collector is monitored by using a camera. After the experiment, Na+, Cl- and K+ levels are measured with ion chromatography. Sweat analyte variations are measured during exercise for an hour at three different locations on the back. The Na+ and Cl- variations show a similar trend and the absolute concentrations vary with the patch location. Na+ and Cl- concentrations increase and K+ concentrations seem to decrease during this exercise. With this new sweat collection system, sweat Na+, Cl- and K+ concentrations can be collected over time during exercise at medium to high intensity, to analyse the trend in electrolyte variations per individual.</p

DNA tracking within a nanochannel: device fabrication and experiments

    Get PDF
Fabrication of nanochannels is drawing considerable interest due to its broad applications in nanobiotechnology (e.g. biomolecular sensing and single DNA manipulation). Nanochannels offer distinct advantages in allowing a slower translocation and multiple sensing spots along the channel, both of which improve the read-out resolution. However, implementing electrodes inside the nanochannel has rarely been demonstrated to our knowledge. The device described in this work is a Si–Glass anodically bonded Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) device of a few millimetres in size capable of performing DNA manipulation. The LOC device structure is based on two mainstream microchannels interconnected by nanochannels. DNA, once trapped within the nanochannel, has been tracked throughout the length of the channel and the data have been recorded and analysed.Peer Reviewe
