Weak Hyperon Production in ep Scattering
We study the kinematics and cross section of the scattering process . The cross section is expressed in terms of complex
form factors characterizing the hadron vertices. We estimate the cross section
for small momentum transfer using known experimental information. To first
order in the momentum transfer, we obtain a model independent result for the
photon-exchange part of the cross section, which is completely determined by
the decay width . For the kinematics of
the parity violation experiment at MAMI, this first order result gives rise to
a ratio of
. The
-exchange and interference parts give much smaller contributions due to
the suppression of the flavor changing weak neutral current in the standard
model. Feasibility of the experimental measurement is briefly discussed.Comment: ReVTeX, 9 pages, one figure embedde
Weak decays of 4He-Lambda
We measured the lifetime and the mesonic and non-mesonic decay rates of the
4He-Lambda hypernucleus. The hypernuclei were created using a 750 MeV/c
momentum K- beam on a liquid 4He target by the reaction 4He(K-,pi-)4He-Lambda.
The 4He-Lambda lifetime was directly measured using protons from Lambda p -> n
p non-mesonic decay (also referred to as proton-stimulated decay) and was found
to have a value of tau = 245 +/- 24 ps. The mesonic decay rates were determined
from the observed numbers of pi-'s and pi0's as Gamma_pi-/Gamma_tot = 0.270 +/-
0.024 and Gamma_pi0/Gamma_tot = 0.564 +/- 0.036, respectively, and the values
of the proton- and neutron-stimulated decay rates were extracted as
Gamma_p/Gamma_tot = 0.169 +/- 0.019 and Gamma_n/Gamma_tot <= 0.032 (95% CL),
respectively. The effects of final-state interactions and possible 3-body
Lambda N N decay contributions were studied in the context of a simple model of
nucleon-stimulated decay. Nucleon-nucleon coincidence events were observed and
were used in the determination of the non-mesonic branching fractions. The
implications of the results of this analysis were considered for the empirical
Delta I = 1/2 rule and the decay rates of the 4H-Lambda hypernucleus.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, published in PRC, revised content to match

The H-Dibaryon and the Hard Core
The H dibaryon, a single, triply magic bag containing two up, two down and
two strange quarks, has long been sought after in a variety of experiments. Its
creation has been attempted in , proton and most recently in relativistic
heavy ion induced reactions. We concentrate on the latter, but our conclusions
are more generally applicable. The two baryons coalescing to form the single
dibaryon, likely in the case of heavy ions, must penetrate
the short range repulsive barrier which is expected to exist between them. We
find that this barrier can profoundly affect the probability of producing the H
state, should it actually exist.Comment: 9 pages including 4 figure
A new measurement of K+(e4) decay and the s-wave pi-pi-scattering length a00
A sample of 400000 events from the decay K+->pi+pi-e+nu(e)(K(e4)) has been
collected in experiment E865 at the Brookhaven AGS. The analysis of these data
yields new measurements of the K(e4) branching ratio
(4.11+-0.01+-0.11)*10**(-5)), the s-wave pi-pi scattering length
a00=0.228+-0.012+-0.003, and the form factors F, G, and H of the hadronic
current and their dependence on the invariant pi-pi mass
First observation of the decay K+ -> e+ nu mu+ mu-
Experiment 865 at the Brookhaven AGS has observed the decay K^+ -> e^+ nu
mu^+ mu^-. The branching ratio extracted is (1.72 +/- 0.37(stat) +/- 0.17(syst)
+/- 0.19(model)) x 10^{-8} where the third term in the error results from the

An Improved upper limit on the decay K^+ -> pi^+ mu^+ e^-
Based on results of a search for the lepton-family-number-violating decay
with data collected by experiment E865 at the
Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory, we place an
upper limit on the branching ratio at (90% C.L.).
Combining the results with earlier E865 data and those of a previous
experiment, E777, an upper limit on the branching ratio of (90% C.L.) is obtained.Comment: v2: 13 pages, submitted to the Phys. Rev. D v3: 13 pages, resubmitted

Transverse Spin at PHENIX: Results and Prospects
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), as the world's first and only
polarized proton collider, offers a unique environment in which to study the
spin structure of the proton. In order to study the proton's transverse spin
structure, the PHENIX experiment at RHIC took data with transversely polarized
beams in 2001-02 and 2005, and it has plans for further running with transverse
polarization in 2006 and beyond. Results from early running as well as
