Lucretius' arguments on the swerve and free-action
In his version of atomism, Lucretius made explicit reference to the concept of an intrinsic declination of the atom, the atomic swerve (clinamen in Latin), stressing that the time and space of the infinitesimal atomic vibration is uncertain. The topic of this article is the Epicurean and Lucretian arguments in favour of the swerve. Our exposition of the Lucretian model of the atomic clinamen will present and elucidate the respective considerations on the alleged role of the swerve in the generation of free-action
Revival of classical political economy: An exposition
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to discuss the theoretical foundations and policy implications of two of the offshoots of modern macroeconomics viz., supply-side economics and rational expectations; and second to evaluate the recent development of thinking in macroeconomics. Thereby it tries to bring forth the current state of macroeconomics, although the term “current” itself is a difficult term to define as the only constant thing is ‘change’, more so in case of an evolutionary science like economics. While highlighting the celebrated classical-Keynesian debate, it thoroughly examines the supply-side economics and rational expectations hypothesis with due importance to their practical application
Quantum Mechanics: Harbinger of a Non-Commutative Probability Theory?
In this paper we discuss the relevance of the algebraic approach to quantum
phenomena first introduced by von Neumann before he confessed to Birkoff that
he no longer believed in Hilbert space. This approach is more general and
allows us to see the structure of quantum processes in terms of non-commutative
probability theory, a non-Boolean structure of the implicate order which
contains Boolean sub-structures which accommodates the explicate classical
world. We move away from mechanical `waves' and `particles' and take as basic
what Bohm called a {\em structure process}. This enables us to learn new
lessons that can have a wider application in the way we think of structures in
language and thought itself.Comment: 20 pages, one figure. Invited pape
Cryogenic fluid management in space
Many future space based vehicles and satellites will require on orbit refuelling procedures. Cryogenic fluid management technology is being developed to assess the requirements of such procedures as well as to aid in the design and development of these vehicles. Cryogenic fluid management technology for this application could be divided into two areas of study, one is concerned with fluid transfer process and the other with cryogenic liquid storage. This division is based upon the needed technology for the development of each area. In the first, the interaction of fluid dynamics with thermodynamics is essential, while in the second only thermodynamic analyses are sufficient to define the problem. The following specific process related to the liquid transfer area are discussed: tank chilldown and fill; tank pressurization; liquid positioning; and slosh dynamics and control. These specific issues are discussed in relation with the required technology for their development in the low gravity application area. In each process the relevant physics controlling the technology is identified and methods for resolving some of the basic questions are discussed
Sales of frozen yoghurt in winter in KiwiYo
This research is conducted to develop marketing strategies to increase sales of frozen yoghurt by KiwiYo. This report could also be helpful for any other ice cream or frozen yoghurt shops because this study might provide innovative strategies that could solve the problem faced by retailers of decrease in sales during winter. This is a research topic that has not previously been extensively studied even though it has a potential market of 74.96 billion by 2024. It has the potential to grow even further while taking it to account that the market dips in the winter season. Finding a viable solution to keep up the sales during winter is a necessary yet challenging task. The data for the research was collected by customer survey and employee interview. The challenges faced in the ice cream/frozen yoghurt industry is due to climate changes, and the best solution is product diversification. In that way outlets will not suffer loss and can make up sales figures in summer without suffering in the winter
