Exploring gender differences in attitudes of university students towards entrepreneurship
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to understand gender differences in entrepreneurial intentions as measured by perceived feasibility and perceived desirability, and to explore gender differences in perceptions of entrepreneurship education needs - in terms of programmes, activities or projects - to succeed in an entrepreneurial career from the university students’ point of view. Design/Methodology/Approach - Using data gathered from 3420 university students in more than 10 countries, and applying the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test, differences between genders and different intention groups were examined. To reduce the items regarding educational needs, factor analysis was used. Gender differences in educational needs were also examined via Mann-Whitney Test. Findings - The results confirm that compared to males, female students are less willing to start their own businesses. There are significant gender differences in terms of perceived feasibility and perceived desirability such that although they feel more supported by their families, females are less self-confident, more tense, reluctant and concerned about entrepreneurship. In terms of entrepreneurial intention, there are fewer gender differences among students; however, differences relating to self-confidence and family support still exist. Furthermore, students cited establishing entrepreneurial mentoring and an appropriate tutoring structure as the most needed entrepreneurial educational activity/program/project at an academic institution; this was rated higher by females compared to males. Practical implications – The findings of this paper could help guide educators and policy makers in designing effective entrepreneurship programmes that are customized to respond to gender specific needs to increase entrepreneurial participation. Originality/Value - This study reveals the gender differences in perceived desirability and perceived feasibility which impact entrepreneurial intentions. Gender differences in the entrepreneurial programmes/activities/projects required at an academic institution to promote entrepreneurial participation among university students is also explored
Elastic Behaviour of Linear Structures Using Modal Superposition and Lagrangian Differencing Dynamics
Elastic deformation and dynamics response of the linear structures due to fluid loads are studied to understand the Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI). A modal coupling solver is developed by solving dynamic equation of motion with external loads, using the mode superposition method with the help of relevant mode shapes and natural frequencies associated with the structure. Natural frequencies and mode shapes have been pre-calculated and provided as input for the simulation. Modal coupling is integrated into the Lagrangian Differencing Dynamics (LDD) method, utilizes finite differences within the framework of Lagrangian context, and strong and implicit formulation of Navier Stokes equations to model the incompressible free-surface fluid. Elastic deformation of the structure due to fluid force obtained from the flow solver is calculated in the modal coupling algorithm using direct numerical integration. Then the elastic deformation is imposed in the flow solver to account for change of the geometry and obtain new flow pressure and velocity fields. The two-way coupling of fluid and structure is successfully validated by simulating dam-break through an elastic gate. Since the LDD method works directly on surface meshes, the simulation is quickly setup and direct coupling of structural deformation eliminated the usual step of mapping of fluid results on the structural mesh and vice-vers
Unlocking the grid: Language-in-education policy realisation in post-apartheid South Africa
This paper reflects on the state of educational language policy two decades into a postApartheid South Africa caught between official multilingualism and English. The
focus is on the national language-in-education policy (LiEP) that advocates additive
bi/multilingualism, and a provincial counterpart, the language transformation plan
(LTP). Using Ricento and Hornberger’s onion metaphor, the paper seeks to uncover
the meanings of policy realisation in education at legislative, institutional, and
interpersonal levels. The LiEP’s non-realisation at institutional level is indexed by a
‘gridlock of collusion’ (Alexander, personal communication) between political elites
and the majority of African-language speakers, who emulatively seek the goods that
an English-medium education promises. To illustrate how teachers can become policy
advocates, data are presented from a bilingual education in-service programme that
supported the LTP. The paper argues that sociolinguistic insights into speakers’
heteroglossic practices should be used to counter prevailing monoglossic policy
discourses and school language practices, and that all languages should be used as
learning resources. Strategic essentialism would recognise the schooling system’s
need to separately classify language subjects and to identify the languages most
productively used for teaching across the curriculum. The paper concludes with a call
for the revision of the LiEP
Evaluating Niger's experience in strengthening supervision, improving availability of child survival drugs through cost recovery, and initiating training for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI)
BACKGROUND: WHO and UNICEF have recently developed the "Integrated Management of Childhood Illness" (IMCI) as an efficient strategy to assist developing countries reduce childhood mortality. Early experience with IMCI implementation suggests that clinical training is essential but not sufficient for the success of the strategy. Attention needs to be given to strengthening health systems, such as supervision and drug supply. RESULTS: This paper presents results of evaluating an innovative approach for implementing IMCI in Niger. It starts with strengthening district level supervision and improving the availability of child survival drugs through cost recovery well before the beginning of IMCI clinical training. The evaluation documented the effectiveness of the initial IMCI clinical training and referral. CONCLUSIONS: Strengthening supervision and assuring the availability of essential drugs need to precede the initiation of IMCI Clinical training. Longer term follow up is necessary to confirm the impact of the approach on IMCI preparation and implementation

Pre-notification letter type and response rate to a postal survey among women who have recently given birth
Background: Surveys are commonly used in health research to assess patient satisfaction with hospital care. Achieving an adequate response rate, in the face of declining trends over time, threatens the quality and reliability of survey results. This paper reports on a postal satisfaction survey conducted with women who had recently given birth, and explores the effect of two strategies on response rates. Methods: A sample of 2048 Australian women who had recently given birth were invited to participate in a postal survey about their recent experiences with maternity care. The study design included two different strategies intended to increase response rates: a randomised controlled trial testing two types of pre-notification letter (with or without the option of opting out of the survey), and a request for consent to link survey data with existing routinely collected health data (omitting the latter data items from the survey reduced survey length and participant burden). Results: The survey had an overall response rate of 46%. Women receiving the pre-notification letter with the option of opting out of the survey were more likely to actively decline to participate than women receiving the letter without this option, although the overall numbers of women were small (27 versus 12). Letter type was not significantly associated with the return of a completed survey. Among women who completed the survey, 97% gave consent to link their survey data with existing health data. Conclusions: Seeking consent for record linkage was highly acceptable to women who completed the survey, and represents an important strategy to add to the arsenal for designing and implementing effective surveys. In addition to aspects of survey design, future research should explore how to more effectively influence personal constructs that contribute to the decision to participate in surveys.NHMR
AIDS knowledge and attitudes in a Turkish population: an epidemiological study
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate and present some pertinent comments concerning Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) knowledge, attitudes and misconceptions among the general population in a city of west Turkey. This study was deemed important and relevant due to the increasing importance of AIDS in Turkey and the other countries. METHODS: Using a multistage area sampling method, a random sample of individuals aged 11–83 years, living in 65 different quarters in the city of Eskisehir, Turkey during September, October and November 2004 were interviewed. RESULTS: In all, 1048 respondents completed the survey. In most items, respondents displayed a fairly good to excellent degree of knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Individuals with higher degrees of education indicated more correct responses in all items relating to knowledge of HIV/AIDS. In general, the respondents' attitudes towards AIDS and people with AIDS were found to be tolerant and positive, with one answer choice showing that the majority of the respondents agreed with the statement that those with HIV/AIDS must be supported, treated and helped (90.7%). Moreover, the proportions of the respondents' misconceptions were found to be significantly low for all the items. However, nearly one fourth of the respondents agreed with the misconceptions 'AIDS is a punishment by God' and 'One is not infected with HIV/AIDS if engaged in sport and well nourished'. CONCLUSION: In general HIV/AIDS related knowledge was high and people showed positive attitudes. However, people continue to hold misconceptions about AIDS and these need to be addressed by health education programs targeting those at higher risk
