    Market-oriented product development as an organizational learning capability: findings from two cases

    Conceptualizing market orientation at the level of the product development process is relevant, because market orientation is a highly critical factor for new product success and this conceptualization can be used as a starting-point to transform the whole organization into a more market oriented one. Market-oriented product development appears to be more than carrying out a number of marketing activities in a product development process. Using concepts from resourcebased theory and organizational learning theory, we draw up a conceptual framework of marketoriented product development as an organizational learning capability substantiated by findings from two case studies. This capability encapsulates the values and norms, knowledge and skills, technical and managerial knowledge systems, which enable learning about markets through information processing behavior in product development and improve this market learning behavior. This conceptualization stimulates research on operationalizing market orientation in the managerial context of a critical business process and research on enhancing the degree of market orientation.

    Ab initio Molecular Dynamical Investigation of the Finite Temperature Behavior of the Tetrahedral Au19_{19} and Au20_{20} Clusters

    Density functional molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to understand the finite temperature behavior of Au19_{19} and Au20_{20} clusters. Au20_{20} has been reported to be a unique molecule having tetrahedral geometry, a large HOMO-LUMO energy gap and an atomic packing similar to that of the bulk gold (J. Li et al., Science, {\bf 299} 864, 2003). Our results show that the geometry of Au19_{19} is exactly identical to that of Au20_{20} with one missing corner atom (called as vacancy). Surprisingly, our calculated heat capacities for this nearly identical pair of gold cluster exhibit dramatic differences. Au20_{20} undergoes a clear and distinct solid like to liquid like transition with a sharp peak in the heat capacity curve around 770 K. On the other hand, Au19_{19} has a broad and flat heat capacity curve with continuous melting transition. This continuous melting transition turns out to be a consequence of a process involving series of atomic rearrangements along the surface to fill in the missing corner atom. This results in a restricted diffusive motion of atoms along the surface of Au19_{19} between 650 K to 900 K during which the shape of the ground state geometry is retained. In contrast, the tetrahedral structure of Au20_{20} is destroyed around 800 K, and the cluster is clearly in a liquid like state above 1000 K. Thus, this work clearly demonstrates that (i) the gold clusters exhibit size sensitive variations in the heat capacity curves and (ii) the broad and continuous melting transition in a cluster, a feature which has so far been attributed to the disorder or absence of symmetry in the system, can also be a consequence of a defect (absence of a cap atom) in the structure.Comment: 7 figure

    Internal and External Induced Circular Dichroism in Cyclodextrin Complexes: A Study of the Complexes of α-Cyclodextrin with (R)-3-Methylcyclopentanone and Cyclopentanone

    The circular dichroism (CD) of (R)-3-methylcyclopentanone 1 in the presence of a-cyclodextrin (aCx) in -water has been measured. The formation constant (K\u27 = 24 mol-1 litre) of al-l complex, specific CD (do = +1.74) of 1 in water solution, and specific CD of this complex in water (t1c\u27 = +1.4,5)have been calculated. Similarly, the induced CD (ICD) of cyclopentanone 2 in the presence of aCx in water has been measured. The formation constant (K = 25 mol-1 litre) of a 1-1 complex and the specific CD (t1c\u27 = -0.034)of this complex have been calculated. A model is presented for the interpretation of the lCD data. Various theoretical possibi1ities are discussed. A comparison with X-Ray and low-temperature neutron-diffraction data for the (2-aCx) complex is attempted. It seems reasonable to conclude that there is only a weak chiral discrimination in this complex in water solution at room temperature

    FAME, the Flux Analysis and Modeling Environment

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The creation and modification of genome-scale metabolic models is a task that requires specialized software tools. While these are available, subsequently running or visualizing a model often relies on disjoint code, which adds additional actions to the analysis routine and, in our experience, renders these applications suboptimal for routine use by (systems) biologists.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The Flux Analysis and Modeling Environment (FAME) is the first web-based modeling tool that combines the tasks of creating, editing, running, and analyzing/visualizing stoichiometric models into a single program. Analysis results can be automatically superimposed on familiar KEGG-like maps. FAME is written in PHP and uses the Python-based PySCeS-CBM for its linear solving capabilities. It comes with a comprehensive manual and a quick-start tutorial, and can be accessed online at <url>http://f-a-m-e.org/</url>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>With FAME, we present the community with an open source, user-friendly, web-based "one stop shop" for stoichiometric modeling. We expect the application will be of substantial use to investigators and educators alike.</p

    Modeling CLV:A test of competing models in the insurance industry

    Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) is one of the key metrics in marketing and is considered an important segmentation base. This paper studies the capabilities of a range of models to predict CLV in the insurance industry. The simplest models can be constructed at the customer relationship level, i.e. aggregated across all services. The more complex models focus on the individual services, paying explicit attention to cross buying, but also retention. The models build on a plethora of approaches used in the existing literature and include a status quo model, a Tobit II model, univariate and multivariate choice models, and duration models. For all models, CLV for each customer is computed for a four-year time horizon. We find that the simple models perform well. The more complex models are expected to better capture the richness of relationship development. Surprisingly, this does not lead to substantially better CLV predictions

    Free and open-source control software for 3-D motion and processing

    RepRap 3-D printers and their derivatives using conventional firmware are limited by: 1) requiring technical knowledge, 2) poor resilience with unreliable hardware, and 3) poor integration in complicated systems. In this paper, a new control system called Franklin, for CNC machines in general and 3-D printers specifically, is presented that enables web-based three dimensional control of additive, subtractive and analytical tools from any Internet connected device. Franklin can be set up and controlled entirely from a web interface; it uses a custom protocol which allows it to continue printing when the connection is temporarily lost, and allows communication with scripts

    Constructive pointfree topology eliminates non-constructive representation theorems from Riesz space theory

    In Riesz space theory it is good practice to avoid representation theorems which depend on the axiom of choice. Here we present a general methodology to do this using pointfree topology. To illustrate the technique we show that almost f-algebras are commutative. The proof is obtained relatively straightforward from the proof by Buskes and van Rooij by using the pointfree Stone-Yosida representation theorem by Coquand and Spitters
