    Future freeze forecasting

Real time GOES thermal data acquisition, an energy balance minimum temperature prediction model and a statistical model are incorporated into a minicomputer system. These components make up the operational "Satellite Freeze Forecast System" being used to aid NOAA, NWS forecasters in developing their freeze forecasts. The general concept of the system is presented in this paper. Specific detailed aspects of the system can be found in the reference cited

A Real Time Freeze Prediction Model Based upon Remotely Sensed Surface Temperatures

A mathematical model based on a numerical solution to the earth-air interface energy flux density equation is described. The model uses synoptic information, real time satellite data and standard meteorological measurements at key locations to produce short-range air and surface temperature predictions for the Florida peninsula during critical freeze nights. A statistical approach is then used to produce a detailed lattice of temperatures with the values from the key locations. The lattice of values is used to produce a thermal map of the Florida peninsula that is displayed on a television screen in a format identical to that used presently to display the satellite thermal data. The work stems from a cooperative project with NOAA, NASA and the University of Florida, to improve freeze forecasts

Remote Sensing as a Tool in Assessing the Impact of Topographical Alterations on the Microclimate

Results and analyses of remotely sensed data taken from a NASA aircraft are reported. The study uses continuous data taken in the 8-14ym region of the infrared spectrum which is directly related to surface temperature. The analysis is concentrated on the micrometeorological effects of lakes and hills during near freezing conditions. The impetus for the study is an economic one since proper selection of a site for certain freeze susceptible crops, such as citrus, can result in huge savings of energy and resources
