Characterization and strengthening a "ghost" building

    Get PDF
In the middle of the eighties it was intended to build a one family dwelling at a North Portuguese Region, but a much bigger edification was constructed, without any design elements. At the end of the nineties this construction was acquired, and another architectonic and functional configuration was designed for this space. Since there were not any elements available for the existent construction, it was carried out several strategies for its geometrical, structural and material characterization. These elements gave the indispensable information for analysing the structural stability of the building, which revealed to be necessary to strengthen foundations, beams and columns. The procedures for characterizing the construction, the structural stability analysis and the strengthening strategies are described in the work

Changes of data sampling procedure to avoid energy and data losses during microclimates monitoring with wireless sensor networks.

Wireless sensor networks are gaining importance in agricultural applications, such as monitoring crops microclimates. Precision agriculture is one of the areas that can most benefit from this technology in the sense that wireless sensors networks allow data collection with high resolution, enabling better decision making. Such networks have restrictions on their deployment in a real environment, for example, on energy. Thus, several studies have been conducted in order to optimize the use of this technology. Depending on the application, it is desirable that the available energy on sensor nodes batteries allows operation for months or even years. One proposed solution to extend the lifetime of sensor nodes, so as to avoid unnecessary data collection, is the implementation of a routing protocol that allows a differentiated data sampling. An application that can benefit from this approach is vineyard microclimates monitoring, which is very important to monitor temperature and reIative humidity, and can apply precision agriculture techniques to the crop. Thus, in the program to be installed into sensor nodes, rules for data collection are defined, so that the value collected by the sensor at a given time is in the rule that defines normal conditions, the rate of sampling data used will be higher; however, when the value collected by the sensor is out ofthis rule, the sampling rate will automatically be reprogrammed to a higher value. This differentiated data collection allows savings in power consumption under normal conditions, and generates less data to be analyzed. Modeling of tension–compression asymmetry and orthotropy on metallic materials: numerical implementation and validation

The details concerning the implementation of the yield criterion developed by Cazacu et al. 2006 (CPB06), which accounts for both tension–compression asymmetry and orthotropy of the plastic flow, in the fully implicit FE solver DD3IMP (contraction of ‘Deep Drawing 3-D IMPlicit') are presented in this work. The implemented constitutive model is extensively described, including the analytical first and second order derivatives required to the stress update algorithm. A set of anisotropy parameters describing the mechanical behavior of two metallic materials at room temperature, namely Zirconium and AZ31-Mg alloy, are identified with the DD3MAT (contraction for ‘Deep Drawing 3-D MATerial’) in-house code (Alves, 2004) [2]. The anisotropy parameters are identified for both the CPB06 and the Cazacu and Barlat (2001) (CB2001) yield criteria, in order to emphasize the importance and role of the strength differential effect. The results clearly show that the CPB06 yield criterion is able to accurately describe both the in-plane anisotropy and tension–compression asymmetry, as well a different anisotropic behavior in uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression. The numerical simulation of a four-point bending test is performed, considering different orientations of the beam, i.e. of the hard/soft to deform direction relatively to the load direction, allowing to validate the implementation. The results obtained with the CPB06 show its ability to describe with accuracy the strain fields in the beam's central cross-section, the distribution of the tensile and compressive layers and, consequently, the shift of the neutral layer. The comparison with the results obtained with CB2001 indicates that the strength differential effect affects the final deformed shape of the beam, particularly for materials exhibiting strong tension–compression asymmetry. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Portugal via the projects PTDC/EME-TME/118420/2010, UID/EMS/00285/2013 and by FEDER, Portugal funds through the program COMPETE - Programa Operational Factores de Competitividade, under the project CENTRO-07-0224-FEDER-002001 (MT4MOBI). Expression of genes encoding extracellular matrix macromolecules and metalloproteinases in avian tibial dyschondroplasia

Avian tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a skeletal disease characterized by disruption of endochondral bone formation. The aim of this study was to determine the expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) macromolecules and ECM-degrading enzymes [matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)] in the growth plates of normal and TD-affected 3-week-old broiler chicks (Cobb strain). Protein levels were analyzed by immunoblotting and gelatin zymography and gene expression by polymerase chain reaction. Expression of genes encoding the ECM macromolecules (collagen types II, IX, X and XI; and aggrecan) was not altered in dyschondroplasia; however, there was down-regulation of genes encoding MMP-9, MMP-13, MMP-10 and MMP-11 in addition to reduced amounts of MMP-2 and MMP-13 proteins. In contrast, there was up-regulation of genes encoding MMP-7 and the vascular endothelial growth factor. These findings suggest that the accumulation of cartilage associated with the disease may be the result of decreased proteolysis due to the down-regulation of MMPs and not to an increased production of ECM macromolecules

Deterministic single-photon source from a single ion

We realize a deterministic single-photon source from one and the same calcium ion interacting with a high-finesse optical cavity. Photons are created in the cavity with efficiency (88 +- 17)%, a tenfold improvement over previous cavity-ion sources. Results of the second-order correlation function are presented, demonstrating a high suppression of two-photon events limited only by background counts. The cavity photon pulse shape is obtained, with good agreement between experiment and simulation. Moreover, theoretical analysis of the temporal evolution of the atomic populations provides relevant information about the dynamics of the process and opens the way to future investigations of a coherent atom-photon interface
