Spatially resolved kinematics in the central 1 kpc of a compact star-forming galaxy at z=2.3 from ALMA CO observations
We present high spatial resolution (FWHM0.14'') observations of the
CO() line in GDS-14876, a compact star-forming galaxy at with
total stellar mass of . The spatially resolved
velocity map of the inner ~kpc reveals a continous velocity
gradient consistent with the kinematics of a rotating disk with km s and . The
gas-to-stellar ratios estimated from CO() and the dust continuum emission
span a broad range, and
, but are nonetheless consistent given the
uncertainties in the conversion factors. The dynamical modeling yields a
dynamical mass of which is
lower, but still consistent with the baryonic mass, (M=
M + M/M), if the smallest
CO-based gas fraction is assumed. Despite a low, overall gas fraction, the
small physical extent of the dense, star-forming gas probed by CO(),
smaller than the stellar size, implies a strong concentration
that increases the gas fraction up to
in the central 1 kpc. Such a gas-rich center, coupled with a high
star-formation rate, SFR 500 M yr, suggests that
GDS-14876 is quickly assembling a dense stellar component (bulge) in a strong
nuclear starburst. Assuming its gas reservoir is depleted without
replenishment, GDS-14876 will quickly ( Myr) become a
compact quiescent galaxy that could retain some fraction of the observed

Government size, composition of public expenditure, and economic development
This paper analyzes the effects of government size and of the composition of public expenditure on economic development. Using the system-GMM estimator for linear
dynamic panel data models, on a sample covering up to 156 countries and 5-year periods from 1980 to 2010, we find that government size as a percentage of GDP has a quadratic (inverted U-shaped) effect on the growth rate of the Human Development Index (HDI). This effect is especially pronounced in developed and high income countries. We also find that the composition of public expenditure affects development, with the share of five

Variational Worldline Approximation for the Relativistic Two-Body Bound State in a Scalar Model
We use the worldline representation of field theory together with a
variational approximation to determine the lowest bound state in the scalar
Wick-Cutkosky model where two equal-mass constituents interact via the exchange
of mesons. Self-energy and vertex corrections are included approximately in a
consistent way as well as crossed diagrams. Only vacuum-polarization effects of
the heavy particles are neglected. In a path integral description of an
appropriate current-current correlator an effective, retarded action is
obtained by integrating out the meson field. As in the polaron problem we
employ a quadratic trial action with variational functions to describe
retardation and binding effects through multiple meson exchange.The variational
equations for these functions are derived, discussed qualitatively and solved
numerically. We compare our results with the ones from traditional approaches
based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation and find an enhanced binding contrary to
some claims in the literature. For weak coupling this is worked out
analytically and compared with results from effective field theories. However,
the well-known instability of the model, which usually is ignored, now appears
at smaller coupling constants than in the one-body case and even when
self-energy and vertex corrections are turned off. This induced instability is
investigated analytically and the width of the bound state above the critical

Optimal Economic Growth under Stochastic Environmental Impact: Sensitivity Analysis
In this work we present an approach toward the sensitivity analysis of optimal economic growth to a negative environmental impact driven by random natural hazards that damage the production output . We use a simplified model of the GDP whose growth leads to the increase of GHG in the atmosphere provided investment in cleaning is insufficient. The hypothesis of the Poisson probability distribution of the natural hazards is used at the first stage of the research. We apply the standard utility function - the discounted integral consumption and construct an optimal investment policy in production and cleaning together with optimal GDP trajectories. We calibrate the model in the global scale and analyze the sensitivity of obtained optimal growth scenarios with respect to uncertain parameters of the Poisson distribution
Universal features in the growth dynamics of complex organizations
We analyze the fluctuations in the gross domestic product (GDP) of 152
countries for the period 1950--1992. We find that (i) the distribution of
annual growth rates for countries of a given GDP decays with ``fatter'' tails
than for a Gaussian, and (ii) the width of the distribution scales as a power
law of GDP with a scaling exponent . Both findings are in
surprising agreement with results on firm growth. These results are consistent
with the hypothesis that the evolution of organizations with complex structure

Worker remittances and the global preconditions of ‘smart development’
With the growing environmental crisis affecting our globe, ideas to weigh economic or social progress by the ‘energy input’ necessary to achieve it are increasingly gaining acceptance. This question is intriguing and is being dealt with by a growing number of studies, focusing on the environmental price of human progress. Even more intriguing, however, is the question of which factors of social organization contribute to a responsible use of the resources of our planet to achieve a given social result (‘smart development’). In this essay, we present the first systematic study on how migration – or rather, more concretely, received worker remittances per GDP – helps the nations of our globe to enjoy social and economic progress at a relatively small environmental price. We look at the effects of migration on the balance sheets of societal accounting, based on the ‘ecological price’ of the combined performance of democracy, economic growth, gender equality, human development, research and development, and social cohesion. Feminism in power, economic freedom, population density, the UNDP education index as well as the receipt of worker remittances all significantly contribute towards a ‘smart overall development’, while high military expenditures and a high world economic openness are a bottleneck for ‘smart overall development’
