Polarization dependence of the third-harmonic generation in multiband superconductors

In a superconductor the third-harmonic generation (THG) of a strong THz pulse is enhanced below Tc by the resonant excitation of lattice-modulated charge fluctuations (LCF), which modulate the response according to the polarization of the field. Here we compute the THG within a multiband model for the prototype NbN superconductor. We show that the non-resonant contribution coming from the instantaneous electronic response and the finite width of the pulse significantly suppress the polarization dependence of the signal, challenging its observation in real systems.Comment: Final version, as publishe

Path Integral and the Induction Law

We show how the induction law is correctly used in the path integral computation of the free particle propagator. The way this primary path integral example is treated in most textbooks is a little bit missleading.Comment: 5 latex pages, no figure

A management architecture for active networks

    Get PDF
In this paper we present an architecture for network and applications management, which is based on the Active Networks paradigm and shows the advantages of network programmability. The stimulus to develop this architecture arises from an actual need to manage a cluster of active nodes, where it is often required to redeploy network assets and modify nodes connectivity. In our architecture, a remote front-end of the managing entity allows the operator to design new network topologies, to check the status of the nodes and to configure them. Moreover, the proposed framework allows to explore an active network, to monitor the active applications, to query each node and to install programmable traps. In order to take advantage of the Active Networks technology, we introduce active SNMP-like MIBs and agents, which are dynamic and programmable. The programmable management agents make tracing distributed applications a feasible task. We propose a general framework that can inter-operate with any active execution environment. In this framework, both the manager and the monitor front-ends communicate with an active node (the Active Network Access Point) through the XML language. A gateway service performs the translation of the queries from XML to an active packet language and injects the code in the network. We demonstrate the implementation of an active network gateway for PLAN (Packet Language for Active Networks) in a forty active nodes testbed. Finally, we discuss an application of the active management architecture to detect the causes of network failures by tracing network events in time

Observation of a New Fluxon Resonant Mechanism in Annular Josephson Tunnel Structures

A novel dynamical state has been observed in the dynamics of a perdurbed sine-Gordon system. This resonant state, has been experimentally observed as a singularity in the dc current voltage characteristic of an annular Josephson tunnel junction, excited in the presence of a magnetic field. With this respect, it can be assimilated to self-resonances known as Fiske steps. Differently from these, however, we demonstrate, on the basis of numerical simulations, that its detailed dynamics involves rotating fluxon pairs, a mechanism associated, so far, to self-resonances known as zero-field steps.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter

Hidden vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating double-well potential

We study vortex formation in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating double-well potential. Besides the ordinary quantized vortices and elusive ghost vortices, "hidden" vortices are found distributing along the central barrier. These hidden vortices are invisible like ghost vortex but carry angular momentum. Moreover, their core size is not given by the healing length, but is strongly influenced by the external potential. We find that the Feynman's rule can be well satisfied only after including the hidden vortices. There is no critical rotating frequency for the formation of hidden vortex while there is one for the formation of ordinary visible vortices. Hidden vortices can be revealed in the free expansion of the Bose-Einstein condensates. In addition, the hidden vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate can appear in other external potentials, such as a rotating anisotropic toroidal trap.Comment: 6pages,5figure

Charged currents, color dipoles and xF_3 at small x

We develop the light-cone color dipole description of highly asymmetric diffractive interactions of left-handed and right-handed electroweak bosons. We identify the origin and estimate the strength of the left-right asymmetry effect in terms of the light-cone wave functions. We report an evaluation of the small-x neutrino-nucleon DIS structure functions xF_3 and 2xF_1 and present comparison with experimental data.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, misprints correcte

In Search of Social Justice Praxis: A Critical Examination of Senior Student Affairs Officers\u27 Leadership Practices

    Get PDF
As the highest ranking administrators in divisions of student affairs, Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAOs) have the substantial opportunity to perform leadership in a manner which realizes social justice processes and goals. Framed by critical postmodernism (Tierney & Rhoads, 1993), this study uses educational criticism and connoisseurship (Eisner, 1976, 1998, 2002) to document the social justice leadership practices of two SSAOs. In depth narratives give rich descriptions of the nuances of social justice leadership as enacted by the SSAOs. Critical interpretation and evaluation of these practices is woven throughout the study. Themes relevant for the field of higher education in student affairs are then presented. Stemming from the narratives, informed questions are offered which can be used to frame further research related to the topic of social justice leadership praxis in higher education. Additionally, implications for SSAO social justice leadership are offered, including the need for better training and the intentional resistance to an evolving neoliberal technocratism adversely impacting social justice aspirations in higher education

White Clauses in Two Historically White Fraternities: Documenting the Past & Exploring Future Implications

    Get PDF
This study offers a critical analysis of the appearance and subsequent removal of white clauses in historically white fraternities (HWFs) using the theoretical framework of Critical Race Theory. Archival records are examined to document the first men of color in two HWFs. Data are then presented using phenomenological research methods from interviews with men who were members of these HWFs at the time of racial integration. Themes of colorblindness and internal and external influence on integration are presented followed by implications for fraternity/sorority communities, campus based professionals, and inter/national organization staff

Transversity from two pion interference fragmentation

We present calculation on the azimuthal spin asymmetries for pion pair production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process at both HERMES and COMPASS kinematics, with transversely polarized proton, deuteron and neutron targets. We calculate the asymmetry by adopting a set of parametrization of the interference fragmentation functions and two different models for the transversity. We find that the result for the proton target is insensitive to the approaches of the transversity but more helpful to understand the interference fragmentation functions. However, for the neutron target, which can be obtained through using deuteron and {3^3He} targets, we find different predictions for different approaches to the transversity. Thus probing the two pion interference fragmentation from the neutron can provide us more interesting information on the transversity.Comment: 15 latex pages, 6 figures, to appear in PR
