Effects of Purified Salmonella enteritidis Endotoxin on the Immune Response of Balb/c Mice
Wasting disease was produced in neonatal Balb/c mice with purified Salmonella enteritidis endotoxins. The endotoxins were chemically characterized to provide the study with a potent endotoxin with constant biological activity. Neonatal mice received an initial injection of 35 μg/g body weight of endotoxin and a dose of 75 μg every third day until day 18. The degree of wasting was estimated by the runting (weight loss) index. Mortality was calculated to be 46%, with a mean survival time of approximately 15 days. The hematologic studies conducted at days 10, 20, and 30 showed an absolute neutrophilia and leukocytosis by day 10 which persisted to day 30. Immunologic data indicated that the responsiveness to sheep erythrocytes was depressed to day 20 and continued to persist at day 30. It was postulated that endotoxin either directly or indirectly affects the immune apparatus which allows the normal flora of the animal to establish an infection leading to wasting and death
The role of freestream turbulence scale in subsonic flow separation
The ojective of this work is the clarification of the role of freestream turbulence scale in determining the location of boundary layer separation. An airfoil in subsonic wind tunnel flow is the specific case studied. Hot-film and hot-wire anemometry, liquid-film visualization and pressure measurements are the principal diagnostic techniques in use. The Vanderbilt University subsonic wind tunnel is the flow facility being used
Experimental Demonstration of Optimal Unambiguous State Discrimination
We present the first full demonstration of unambiguous state discrimination
between non-orthogonal quantum states. Using a novel free space interferometer
we have realised the optimum quantum measurement scheme for two non-orthogonal
states of light, known as the Ivanovic-Dieks-Peres (IDP) measurement. We have
for the first time gained access to all three possible outcomes of this
measurement. All aspects of this generalised measurement scheme, including its
superiority over a standard von Neumann measurement, have been demonstrated
within 1.5% of the IDP predictions
The role of freestream turbulence scale in subsonic flow separation
The clarification of the role of freestream turbulence scale in determining the location of boundary layer separation is discussed. Modifications to the test facility were completed. Wind tunnel flow characteristics, including turbulence parameters, were determined with two turbulence generating grids, as well as no grid. These results are summarized. Initial results on the role of scale on turbulent boundary layer separation on the upper surface of an airfoil model are also discussed
<i>‘What retention’ means to me</i>: the position of the adult learner in student retention
Studies of student retention and progression overwhelmingly appear adopt definitions that place the institution, rather than the student, at the centre. Retention is most often conceived in terms of linear and continuous progress between institutionally identified start and end points.
This paper reports on research that considered data from 38 in-depth interviews conducted with individuals who had characteristics often associated with non-traditional engagement in higher education who between 2006 and 2010 had studied an ‘Introduction to HE’ module at one distance higher education institution, some of whom had progressed to further study at that institution, some of whom had not. The research deployed a life histories approach to seek a finer grained understanding of how individuals conceptualise their own learning journey and experience, in order to reflect on institutional conceptions of student retention.
The findings highlight potential anomalies hidden within institutional retention rates – large proportions of the interview participants who were not ‘retained’ by the institution reported successful progression to and in other learning institutions and environments, both formal and informal. Nearly all described positive perspectives on lifelong learning which were either engendered or improved by the learning undertaken. This attests to the complexity of individuals’ lives and provides clear evidence that institution-centric definitions of retention and progression are insufficient to create truly meaningful understanding of successful individual learning journeys and experiences. It is argued that only through careful consideration of the lived experience of students and a re-conception of measures of retention, will we be able to offer real insight into improving student retention
Entanglement reciprocation between qubits and continuous variables
We investigate how entanglement can be transferred between qubits and
continuous variable (CV) systems. We find that one ebit borne in maximally
entangled qubits can be fully transferred to two CV systems which are initially
prepared in pure separable Gaussian field with high excitation. We show that it
is possible, though not straightforward, to retrieve the entanglement back to
qubits from the entangled CV systems. The possibility of deposition of multiple
ebits from qubits to the initially unentangled CV systems is also pointed out.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX
On the Quantum Phase Operator for Coherent States
In papers by Lynch [Phys. Rev. A41, 2841 (1990)] and Gerry and Urbanski
[Phys. Rev. A42, 662 (1990)] it has been argued that the phase-fluctuation
laser experiments of Gerhardt, B\"uchler and Lifkin [Phys. Lett. 49A, 119
(1974)] are in good agreement with the variance of the Pegg-Barnett phase
operator for a coherent state, even for a small number of photons. We argue
that this is not conclusive. In fact, we show that the variance of the phase in
fact depends on the relative phase between the phase of the coherent state and
the off-set phase of the Pegg-Barnett phase operator. This off-set
phase is replaced with the phase of a reference beam in an actual experiment
and we show that several choices of such a relative phase can be fitted to the
experimental data. We also discuss the Noh, Foug\`{e}res and Mandel [Phys.Rev.
A46, 2840 (1992)] relative phase experiment in terms of the Pegg-Barnett phase
