Kaon Condensation in ``Nuclear Star" Matter
The critical density for kaon condensation in ``nuclear star" matter is
computed up to two-loop order {\it in medium} (corresponding to
next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory in free space) with
a heavy-baryon effective chiral Lagrangian whose parameters are determined from
scattering and kaonic atom data. To the order considered, the kaon
self-energy has highly non-linear density dependence in dense matter. We find
that the four-Fermi interaction terms in the chiral Lagrangian play an
important role in triggering condensation, predicting for ``natural" values of
the four-Fermi interactions a rather low critical density, .Comment: 12 pages and 2 figures(LaTeX), SNUTP-94-28. The fig. 3 is replaced,

Lie and Noether symmetries of geodesic equations and collineations
The Lie symmetries of the geodesic equations in a Riemannian space are
computed in terms of the special projective group and its degenerates (affine
vectors, homothetic vector and Killing vectors) of the metric. The Noether
symmetries of the same equations are given in terms of the homothetic and the
Killing vectors of the metric. It is shown that the geodesic equations in a
Riemannian space admit three linear first integrals and two quadratic first
integrals. We apply the results in the case of Einstein spaces, the
Schwarzschild spacetime and the Friedman Robertson Walker spacetime. In each
case the Lie and the Noether symmetries are computed explicitly together with
the corresponding linear and quadratic first integrals.Comment: 19 page
From Kaon-Nuclear Interactions to Kaon Condensation
An effective chiral Lagrangian in heavy-fermion formalism whose parameters
are constrained by kaon-nucleon and kaon-nuclear interactions next to the
leading order in chiral expansion is used to describe kaon condensation in
dense ``neutron star" matter. The critical density is found to be robust with
respect to the parameters of the chiral Lagrangian and comes out to be
. Once kaon condensation sets in, the system is no
longer composed of neutron matter but of nuclear matter. Possible consequences
on stellar collapse with the formation of compact ``nuclear stars" or
light-mass black holes are pointed out.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, NORDITA-93/30 N, SUNY-NTG-93-
Fokker-Planck Equation for Boltzmann-type and Active Particles: transfer probability approach
Fokker-Planck equation with the velocity-dependent coefficients is considered
for various isotropic systems on the basis of probability transition (PT)
approach. This method provides the self-consistent and universal description of
friction and diffusion for Brownian particles. Renormalization of the friction
coefficient is shown to occur for two dimensional (2-D) and three dimensional
(3-D) cases, due to the tensorial character of diffusion. The specific forms of
PT are calculated for the Boltzmann-type of collisions and for the
absorption-type of collisions (the later are typical for dusty plasmas and some
other systems). Validity of the Einstein's relation for the Boltzmann-type
collisions is analyzed for the velocity-dependent friction and diffusion
coefficients. For the Boltzmann-type collisions in the region of very high
grain velocity as well as it is always for non-Boltzmann collisions, such as,
e.g., absorption collisions, the Einstein relation is violated, although some
other relations (determined by the structure of PT) can exist. The generalized
friction force is investigated in dusty plasma in the framework of the PT
approach. The relation between this force, negative collecting friction force
and scattering and collecting drag forces is established.+AFwAXA- The concept
of probability transition is used to describe motion of active particles in an
ambient medium. On basis of the physical arguments the PT for a simple model of
the active particle is constructed and the coefficients of the relevant
Fokker-Planck equation are found. The stationary solution of this equation is
typical for the simplest self-organized molecular machines.+AFwAXA- PACS

Coronal Shock Waves, EUV waves, and their Relation to CMEs. II. Modeling MHD Shock Wave Propagation Along the Solar Surface, Using Nonlinear Geometrical Acoustics
We model the propagation of a coronal shock wave, using nonlinear geometrical
acoustics. The method is based on the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approach
and takes into account the main properties of nonlinear waves: i) dependence of
the wave front velocity on the wave amplitude, ii) nonlinear dissipation of the
wave energy, and iii) progressive increase in the duration of solitary shock
waves. We address the method in detail and present results of the modeling of
the propagation of shock-associated extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) waves as well as
Moreton waves along the solar surface in the simplest solar corona model. The
calculations reveal deceleration and lengthening of the waves. In contrast,
waves considered in the linear approximation keep their length unchanged and
slightly accelerate.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physic
Antikaon condensation and the metastability of protoneutron stars
We investigate the condensation of meson along with
condensation in the neutrino trapped matter with and without hyperons.
Calculations are performed in the relativistic mean field models in which both
the baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by meson
exchange. In the neutrino trapped matter relevant to protoneutron stars, the
critical density of condensation is shifted considerably to higher
density whereas that of condensation is shifted slightly to higher
density with respect to that of the neutrino free case. The onset of
condensation always occurs earlier than that of condensation. A
significant region of maximum mass protoneutron stars is found to contain condensate for larger values of the antikaon potential. With the
appearance of condensation, there is a region of symmetric nuclear
matter in the inner core of a protoneutron star. It is found that the maximum
mass of a protoneutron star containing and condensate is
greater than that of the corresponding neutron star. We revisit the implication
of this scenario in the context of the metastability of protoneutron stars and
their evolution to low mass black holes.Comment: 26 pages; Revtex; 8 figures include
Boundary Liouville theory at c=1
The c=1 Liouville theory has received some attention recently as the
Euclidean version of an exact rolling tachyon background. In an earlier paper
it was shown that the bulk theory can be identified with the interacting c=1
limit of unitary minimal models. Here we extend the analysis of the c=1-limit
to the boundary problem. Most importantly, we show that the FZZT branes of
Liouville theory give rise to a new 1-parameter family of boundary theories at
c=1. These models share many features with the boundary Sine-Gordon theory, in
particular they possess an open string spectrum with band-gaps of finite width.
We propose explicit formulas for the boundary 2-point function and for the
bulk-boundary operator product expansion in the c=1 boundary Liouville model.
As a by-product of our analysis we also provide a nice geometric interpretation
for ZZ branes and their relation with FZZT branes in the c=1 theory.Comment: 37 pages, 1 figure. Minor error corrected, slight change in result

EFFECT OF CORTISOL TREATMENT ON HORMONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA
The temporal relationship between administration of cortisol and serum 17Α-hydroxyprogesterone was investigated in five patients aged 9-19 years with congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. There was marked variability in the 17Α-hydroxyprogesterone response (determined hourly for 24 h) of individual patients to administration of cortisol. Mean concentration was less than 0.030 Μmol/l in one patient but 0.519Μ mol/l in another. Levels were higher in all patients while off treatment, and were greatest in those with salt-losing adrenal hyperplasia. Growth hormone secretion was not suppressed by treatment with cortisol. Withdrawal of cortisol for 3 days resulted in a significant decrease in the mean serum FSH/LH ratio and a rise in serum testosterone in all subjects. Episodic release of gonadotrophins persisted in the adolescent patients.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/75713/1/j.1365-2265.1977.tb02002.x.pd
Parity nonconserving cold neutron-parahydrogen interactions
Three pion dominated observables of the parity nonconserving interactions
between the cold neutrons and parahydrogen are calculated. The transversely
polarized neutron spin rotation, unpolarized neutron longitudinal polarization,
and photon-asymmetry of the radiative polarized neutron capture are considered.
For the numerical evaluation of the observables, the strong interactions are
taken into account by the Reid93 potential and the parity nonconserving
interactions by the DDH model along with the two-pion exchange.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
