Self-referential cognition and empathy in autism.
BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have profound impairments in the interpersonal social domain, but it is unclear if individuals with ASC also have impairments in the intrapersonal self-referential domain. We aimed to evaluate across several well validated measures in both domains, whether both self-referential cognition and empathy are impaired in ASC and whether these two domains are related to each other. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Thirty adults aged 19-45, with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism and 30 age, sex, and IQ matched controls participated in the self-reference effect (SRE) paradigm. In the SRE paradigm, participants judged adjectives in relation to the self, a similar close other, a dissimilar non-close other, or for linguistic content. Recognition memory was later tested. After the SRE paradigm, several other complimentary self-referential cognitive measures were taken. Alexithymia and private self-consciousness were measured via self-report. Self-focused attention was measured on the Self-Focus Sentence Completion task. Empathy was measured with 3 self-report instruments and 1 performance measure of mentalizing (Eyes test). Self-reported autistic traits were also measured with the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ). Although individuals with ASC showed a significant SRE in memory, this bias was decreased compared to controls. Individuals with ASC also showed reduced memory for the self and a similar close other and also had concurrent impairments on measures of alexithymia, self-focused attention, and on all 4 empathy measures. Individual differences in self-referential cognition predicted mentalizing ability and self-reported autistic traits. More alexithymia and less self memory was predictive of larger mentalizing impairments and AQ scores regardless of diagnosis. In ASC, more self-focused attention is associated with better mentalizing ability and lower AQ scores, while in controls, more self-focused attention is associated with decreased mentalizing ability and higher AQ scores. Increasing private self-consciousness also predicted better mentalizing ability, but only for individuals with ASC. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We conclude that individuals with ASC have broad impairments in both self-referential cognition and empathy. These two domains are also intrinsically linked and support predictions made by simulation theory. Our results also highlight a specific dysfunction in ASC within cortical midlines structures of the brain such as the medial prefrontal cortex

In early 2011, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) began implementation of the Summon Web-scale discovery service from Serials Solutions. This case study will explore the challenges and successes of the implementation and launch process. Topics covered will include project management overview; integration of Summon with our ILS, link resolver, and Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC); mapping of the library\u27s print collection to the Summon interface; issues that arose with the ingest of our titles; incorporation into the library\u27s daily workflow; maintenance of e-resource holdings in two separate knowledge bases; and integration into public services reference and teaching
High-performance thermal emitters based on laser engineered metal surfaces
Effective thermal management is of paramount importance for all high-temperature
systems operating under vacuum. Cooling of such systems relies mainly on radiative heat transfer
requiring high spectral emissivity of surfaces, which is strongly affected by the surface condition.
Pulsed laser structuring of stainless steel in air resulted in the spectral hemispherical emissivity
values exceeding 0.95 in the 2.5–15 µm spectral region. The effects of surface oxidation and
topography on spectral emissivity as well as high temperature stability of the surface structures
were examined. High performance stability of the laser textured surfaces was confirmed after
thermal aging studies at 320°C for 96 hour
The Selberg trace formula for Dirac operators
We examine spectra of Dirac operators on compact hyperbolic surfaces.
Particular attention is devoted to symmetry considerations, leading to
non-trivial multiplicities of eigenvalues. The relation to spectra of
Maass-Laplace operators is also exploited. Our main result is a Selberg trace

Decay of heavy-light hybrids in HQET sum rules
The decay widths of the 0^{++} and 1^{-+} heavy-light hybrids to B(D) and
pion are calculated by using the QCD sum rules. The interpolated current of the
hybrid is chosen as . In
order to simplify the calculation and avoid the ambiguity of three-point
correlation function, a two-point correlation function between the pion and
vacuum is used instead. The decay width of the is about 12(16)
MeV while the is around 0.4(1.8) MeV. We keep the leading

2018 International Atmospheric Rivers Conference: Multi‐disciplinary studies and high‐impact applications of atmospheric rivers
Atmospheric rivers (ARs) play a vital role in shaping the hydroclimate of many regions globally, and can substantially impact water resource management, emergency response planning, and other socioeconomic entities. The second International Atmospheric Rivers Conference took place at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, during 25–28 June, 2018, in La Jolla, California, USA. It was sponsored by the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). A total of 120 people attended the Conference with 94 abstracts submitted and 30 participating students. In addition to the conference, the Student Forecasting Workshop was organised in the same week. During this workshop, students were exposed to AR forecasting tools, and learned examples of how these tools could be used to make decisions for various applications. The main goals of this conference were to bring together experts from across the fields of hydrology, atmospheric, oceanic, and polar sciences, as well as water management, civil engineering, and ecology to advance the state of AR science and to explore the future directions for the field. The conference was organised into traditional oral and poster presentations, along with panel discussions and Breakout Groups. This format allowed enhanced interaction between participants, driving progress within the scientific community and the enhanced communication of societal needs by various stakeholders. Several emerging topics of research were highlighted, including subseasonal‐to‐seasonal (S2S) prediction of ARs and an overview of the AR Reconnaissance campaign. Time course of normalization of functional β-cell capacity in the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial after weight loss in type 2 diabetes
Objective:
To assess functional β-cell capacity in type 2 diabetes during 2 years of remission induced by dietary weight loss.
Research Design and Methods:
A Stepped Insulin Secretion Test with Arginine was used to quantify functional β-cell capacity by hyperglycemia and arginine stimulation. Thirty-nine of 57 participants initially achieved remission (HbA1c <6.5% [<48 mmol/mol] and fasting plasma glucose <7 mmol/L on no antidiabetic drug therapy) with a 16.4 ± 7.7 kg weight loss and were followed up with supportive advice on avoidance of weight regain. At 2 years, 20 participants remained in remission in the study. A nondiabetic control (NDC) group, matched for age, sex, and weight after weight loss with the intervention group, was studied once.
Results:
During remission, median (interquartile range) maximal rate of insulin secretion increased from 581 (480–811) pmol/min/m2 at baseline to 736 (542–998) pmol/min/m2 at 5 months, 942 (565–1,240) pmol/min/m2 at 12 months (P = 0.028 from baseline), and 936 (635–1,435) pmol/min/m2 at 24 months (P = 0.023 from baseline; n = 20 of 39 of those initially in remission). This was comparable to the NDC group (1,016 [857–1,507] pmol/min/m2) by 12 (P = 0.064) and 24 (P = 0.244) months. Median first-phase insulin response increased from baseline to 5 months (42 [4–67] to 107 [59–163] pmol/min/m2; P < 0.0001) and then remained stable at 12 and 24 months (110 [59–201] and 125 [65–166] pmol/min/m2, respectively; P < 0.0001 vs. baseline) but lower than that of the NDC group (250 [226–429] pmol/min/m2; P < 0.0001).
Conclusions:
A gradual increase in assessed functional β-cell capacity occurred after weight loss, becoming similar to NDC participants by 12 months. This was unchanged at 2 years with continuing remission of type 2 diabetes
