Foram identificados fragmentos de antenas, pernas, asas e mandíbulas no conteúdo alimentar de A. basistriata, T. brasiliensis, Scarites sp.2 e Scarites sp.3.Ground beetles or carabids are collective terms for the beetle family Carabidae (Insecta, Coleoptera), which contains many species considered important predators associated with agricultural cultures. Among the main factors considered in studies on food habits is determination the type of food used by carabid. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different diet types on consumption, viability and number of egg produced by Abaris basistriata Chaudoir, 1873, Selenophorus seriatoporus Putzeys, 1878, Tetracha brasiliensis (Kirby, 1818), Scarites sp.2 e Scarites sp.3. and determination the type of alimentary material in the gut these five carabid. The diets assessed were: larvae of Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae), beef mincemeat, dry cat food, the greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani, 1852) (Insecta, Hemiptera, Aphididae), seeds of the signal grass Brachiaria decumbens Stapf (Poaceae) and a mixture of the diets. The material alimentary in the crop and proventriculus of 10 carabid adults of each species collected in the field we analyzed. Abaris basistriata, T. brasiliensis, Scarites sp.2 and Scarites sp.3 did not consume the B. decumbens seeds. The most consumed diet by five species was T. molitor larvae. Schizaphis graminum and T. molitor larvae / mixture were considered the diets most favourable for the reproductive capacity of A. basistriata and S. Seriatoporus/T. brasiliensis, respectively. On the other hand, T. molitor larvae and mixture of the diets were the most favorable diets for rearing A. basistriata, S. Seriatoporus and T. brasiliensis under laboratory conditions. All species showed fluid and pieces of integument of arthropods in gut, but without displaying the plant material. Some materials gut were identified as fragments of antennae, legs, wings and mandibles in alimentary content of A. basistriata, T. brasiliensis, Scarites sp.2 and Scarites sp.3.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

Due to the importance of some Pleurosticti Scarabaeidae as agricultural pests allied to information absence on the species that occur in Brazilian Central-West region, on studies occurrence, biology and behavior on this group of scarabs were conducted. Biology and behavioral studies started with Liogenys fuscus Blanchard, 1850 (Melolonthinae), a very common species and were developed in Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul. Adult beetles were collected from light traps from February 2005 to January 2007, at the experimental farm of the Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul in Aquidauana (UEMS). In the laboratory adults were placed in plastic containers with soil with sprouts of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf (Poaceae). Eggs were transferred to a climatized chamber at 26 ± 1º C with a 12hourlight, 12hour darkness photoperiod cycle. Adult flight activity occurred in August and in September to December from 06:00 pm to 06:00 am, with the largest number of individuals flying from 07:00 to 10:00 pm. Eggs measured 1 x 1.5 mm and were laid individually or in groups in soil chambers; eggs were initially white and became yellow near hatching. The embryonic period lasted 14.3 days; first, second and third instars lasted 28.5, 48.8, and 68.2 days, respectively. The prepupal period lasted 120.2 days and the prepupa stayed inactive in soil. The mean duration of pupal stage was 27.5 days and the mean longevity of adults was 23.6 days. In laboratory the calling behavior between males and females was observed; copulation lasted, in mean, 25 minutes

The objective of this study was to evaluate different citrus leprosis management tactics during seven seasons, based in pruning and acaricide applications, considering technical and economic aspects of each tactic. The trial was conducted from October 2003 to August 2010 in an orange plantation of Pera cv. located in the municipality of Reginópolis-SP, Brazil. The plants of citrus used were12 years old and grafted onto Cleopatra tangerine. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, in a factorial scheme, made up of factors type of pruning (A), with six levels: (1) drastic pruning, (2) intermediate pruning without leprosis lesions, (3) intermediate pruning with leprosis lesions (4) light pruning, (5) without pruning and (6) replant; acaricide applications factor (B), with three levels: (1) without acaricides applications, (2) with lime sulfur applications and (3) spirodiclofen or cyhexatin applied in rotation; pruning factor to remove leprosis symptomatic branches (C), with two levels: (1) with pruning for removal, (2) without removal pruning. The combination of factors, with respective levels (6 x 3 x 2), resulted in 36 treatments that were repeated four times, with each parcel being made up of three plants in a row. After seven years, it was observed that the types of the pruning and remove of leprosis symptomatic branches used as single management tactic, is not sufficient to leprosis control. Therefore, the results demonstrated that for leprosis management, it is essential the association between tactics, especially the control mite vector. For ensuring the citrus production economically, the use of acaricides highly efficient is essential in B. phoenicis control. The recommendation of the type of pruning should be in function of the leprosis incidence and severity in the orchard. In orchards with low leprosis incidence and severity the light pruning is more appropriate, because it is efficient and ensures greater financial balance. However, in orchards with high leprosis incidence and severity it is indicated the severe pruning for reducing or eliminating inoculum source. Between the severe prunings, the intermediate pruning with leprosis lesions is the most relevant, because the financial return will be faster. Replant is indicated only for young orchards, because does not imply in changes onto cultural practices

BACKGROUND: Leprosis is one of the most serious citrus plant diseases. Leprosis-affected plants, especially sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck], which is the most widely cultivated citrus fruit worldwide, show reduced photosynthetic capacity and severe defoliation. The aim was to evaluate the relationship between the Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) vector mite and citrus leprosis disease in Pera sweet orange plants grafted on different rootstocks. Data were analysed using numerical classification and conventional statistical analysis (ANOVA). RESULTS: Both viruliferous and non-viruliferous B. phoenicis populations increased in number on plants maintained at low soil water content. Among the evaluated rootstocks, Sunki mandarin proved least favourable for mite population increase. Furthermore, the viruliferous mite population increased more rapidly than the non-viruliferous mite population. CONCLUSION: The Cleopatra rootstock showed low variability in leaf nitrogen content, low mite number and low leprosis severity, thereby producing the most favourable results. Under appropriate moisture conditions, the Sunki rootstock produced the best results, showing the least severe leprosis. Rangpur lime rootstock grown in soil with varying water content showed the greatest variation in foliar nitrogen content, mite number and severity of leprosis and is considered to be the most difficult rootstock to manage.
