    Promising Practices: Benefits Planning, Assistance and Outreach Services Provided by Centers for Independent Living

    The Benefits Planning, Assistance and Outreach (BPA&O) program has been developed by SSA to provide accurate, current, individualized benefits and work incentives information to people with disabilities. Benefits and work incentives counseling services allow individuals with disabilities to make informed choices and can contribute to their ability to self-advocate around issues of employment. There are currently 113 BPA&O projects covering beneficiaries in every state plus Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands. The BPA&O programs are operated by state vocational rehabilitation agencies, private non-profit and private for-profit corporations, and 38 are operated by Centers for Independent Living. This promising practice brief outlines the unique characteristics of two BPA&O projects operated by IL Centers in two New England states: The Vermont Center for Independent Living (VCIL), and New Hampshire’s Granite State Independent Living (GSIL)

    Changes in disability policy at the state and federal level have presented many new opportunities for meaningful systems change and services delivery for people with disabilities. Since 2000, the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Rehabilitation Services Administration have issued many grants to state agencies, community-based service providers and advocates to address barriers to employment for people with disabilities. Many of these grants have competitive employment as the goal, yet very few of these grants have built in support for benefits planning and assistance – a function that many believe is critical to achieving competitive employment. In this Promising Practices, the Illinois Division of Rehabilitation Services BPA&O Project (DRS BPA&O Project) and the Human Services Center (HSC), a community-based mental health center and the recipient of a DOL Customized Employment Grant, created a model partnership to ensure that the 600 consumers with severe mental illness served by HSC under their grant would gain access to benefits planning services. They call their model partnership an “Advanced Referral System.

    Background: Cancer gene therapy will benefit from vectors that are able to replicate in tumor tissue and cause a bystander effect. Replication-competent murine leukemia virus (MLV) has been described to have potential as cancer therapeutics, however, MLV infection does not cause a cytopathic effect in the infected cell and viral replication can only be studied by immunostaining or measurement of reverse transcriptase activity. Results: We inserted the coding sequences for green fluorescent protein (GFP) into the proline-rich region (PRR) of the ecotropic envelope protein (Env) and were able to fluorescently label MLV. This allowed us to directly monitor viral replication and attachment to target cells by flow cytometry. We used this method to study viral replication of recombinant MLVs and split viral genomes, which were generated by replacement of the MLV env gene with the red fluorescent protein (RFP) and separately cloning GFP-Env into a retroviral vector. Co-transfection of both plasmids into target cells resulted in the generation of semi-replicative vectors, and the two color labeling allowed to determine the distribution of the individual genomes in the target cells and was indicative for the occurrence of recombination events. Conclusions: Fluorescently labeled MLVs are excellent tools for the study of factors that influence viral replication and can be used to optimize MLV-based replication-competent viruses or vectors for gene therapy

    Nicht-morphologische Nominalinkorporation : etwas ganz anderes?

    Das Phänomen der Inkorporation, spezieller Nominalinkorporation (NI), wurde ursprünglich in der Forschung vor allem in nordamerikanischen Indianersprachen untersucht und zu ihrer typologischen Beschreibung herangezogen. Daraus ergab sich eine Definition von NI als einem morphologischen Verfahren, bei dem ein prädikativer Ausdruck (V) einen referenzfähigen Ausdruck (N) inkorporiert, um einen komplexen prädikativen Ausdruck (V) abzuleiten. Nach heutigen Erkenntnissen jedoch gilt NI als relativ universell vertretenes Verfahren, das in den Sprachen der Welt mehr oder weniger prominent zu finden ist. Strittig ist dabei, ob das Inkorporat nur seinen syntaktischen Status – dies wäre als weit gefaßte Definition zu bezeichnen – oder auch seinen Wortstatus – dagegen eng gefaßte Definition (=Komposition) – verliert. Mit dieser Frage verbunden scheint die Diskussion um den Status von NI innerhalb eines Sprachmodells: Handelt es sich um ein syntaktisches Verfahren und ist als solches produktiv mit einer relativen Eigenständigkeit der Elemente (Sadock 1986/Baker 1988) oder um Lexikalisierung (Mithun 1984), also um einen Wortbildungsmechanismus mit einer zumindest tendenziellen Verfestigung der beteiligten Elemente? Allen diesen Modellen gemeinsam bleibt jedoch die Tatsache, daß sie im Bereich der Morphologie ansetzen. Wir wollen in dieser Arbeit den umgekehrten Weg beschreiten und anhand des von Mithun (1984) aufgestellten Katalogs von Charakteristika nach Phänomenen "nicht-morphologischer" NI suchen und sie am Material der jeweiligen Sprache erörtern

    Major Loss of the 28-kD Protein of Gap Junction in Proliferating Hepatocytes

    There is a reduction in the 28-kD gap junction protein detectable by immunofluorescence in livers of partially hepatectomized rats and in cultured hepatocytes stimulated to proliferate. By the coordinate use of antibodies directed to the hepatic junction protein (HJP28) and the use of a monoclonal antibody that recognizes bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporated into DNA, we have been able to study the relationship between detectable gap junction protein and cell division. Hepatocytes that label with BrdU in the regenerating liver and in cell culture show a significant reduction of HJP28. Cells that do not synthesize DNA, on the other hand, show normal levels and distribution of immunoreactive gap junction protein. We postulate that the quantitative changes in gap junction expression might play an important role in the control of proliferation in the liver

    Reproductive performance parameters in a large population of game-ranched white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum simum)

    The population of free-roaming white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) is under serious threat. Captive breeding of this species is therefore becoming more important, but this is challenging and often not successful. Obtaining reproductive reference values is a crucial aspect of improving these breeding results. In this study performed between 2008 and 2016, reproductive performance was analysed in 1,354 animals kept in a 8000 hectares game-ranched environment. Descriptive statistics of this captive population showed an average annual herd growth (%) of 7.0 +/- 0.1 (min -9-max 15). Average calving rates were calculated as an annual calving rate of 20% and biennial calving rate of 37% adult females calving per year. Females had a median age of 83.2 months at first calving (IQR 72.9-110.7) and inter-calving intervals of 29.2 (IQR 24.6-34.8) months. Furthermore, translocations of animals did not interfere with reproductive success in terms of inter-calving periods or age at first calving. Multivariate models showed a clear seasonal calving pattern with a significant increase of the number of calvings during December-April when compared to April-December. Our results did not show any significant skewed progeny sex ratios. Weather observations showed no significant influence of rain or season on sex ratios of the calves

    Follow-up investigations of tau protein and S-100B levels in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

    Background: S-100B and tau protein have a high differential diagnostic potential for the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). So far there has been only limited information available about the dynamics of these parameters in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). However, there is a special interest in finding biochemical markers to monitor disease progression for differential diagnosis and treatment. Patients and Methods: We analyzed CSF of 45 patients with CJD and of 45 patients with other neurological diseases for tau protein and S-100B in a follow-up setting. All diagnoses of CJD were later neuropathologically verified. A ratio between tau protein differences and the time between lumbar puncture was calculated. The same was done for S-100B. Results: Tau protein levels of 34 cases were above the cut-off level for CJD (>1,300 pg/ml) in the first CSF sample. In 7 of 11 patients with lower tau levels in the first CSF sample, tau levels rose. The above-mentioned ratio was significantly higher in the CJD group than in the group with other neurological diseases. Similar results were obtained for S-100B. Conclusion: We conclude that follow-up investigations and calculation of ratios is a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of CJD. Variations in this pattern were observed in single cases.     Doing Gender in Public Services: Affective Labour of Employment Agents

    The restructuring of state bureaucracies into service organi zations and the new welfare state paradigm of activation have changed the work requirements of front-line workers in public employment agencies across Europe. Public employment agents are less engaged in bureaucratic labour, but have to perform service work. They use affective means to motivate and to monitor and sanction jobseekers. This article provides evidence that these transformations in Aus tria, Germany and Switzerland did not suspend the gender ing of public service work. We discovered four typical modes of affectively enacting the state: both male and female employment agents follow feminized service work pat terns or masculinized entrepreneurial norms. To prevent a possible loss of their professional status, some employment agents reinterpret affective labour as professional service work that demands high expertise. Others resist the activa tion paradigm by performing traditionally feminized care work or by still adhering to affect-neutral male bureaucratic work
