Behind the urbanism : images of the city in modern marketing
Identity after death
I dedicated my doctoral thesis to the problem of urban necropolises. Focusing on the cemeteries of Katowice I tried to describe their contemporary roles and significance. If one is to give some thought as to why among many other problems I chose this particular one, the answer does not seem complicated at all. Since my childhood years cemeteries, mainly those situated in the city centre, were a place of my daily walks. Involved with them are numerous memories, however this is neither the time, nor the place to write about them.
Nevertheless, I would like to bring back one thread – the issue that caught my attention already in my childhood. Among the more or less cared for tombstones, although in fact they were extremely similar to one another, one could find old, usually very lavish tombs on which barely visible were the blurred remains of
ancient inscriptions (...)
It looks so pretty in New York City. O Nowym Jorku (także) w kulturze
In the article New York is analysed as a city not in the terms of urbanism but culture.
The City became inspiring for many artists such as Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Truman Capote, Janusz
Głowacki, Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Woody Allen, Roman Polański etc. and also for a number
of social‑scientists
like Claude Lévy‑Strauss,
James Clifford or Jean Baudrillard. The author of the
essay tries to present different points of view of above quoted on the same area — New York and
especially Manhattan, and proves that it was described, painted, photographed or filmed so many
times that people round the world have their own mental image of it even if they have never been to
the USA. This image comes from high and pop culture, popular knowledge and scientific analysis.
In the essay both literary and scientific texts blend to show the way the image of New York City is
constructed and how it is displayed to the audience
Nekropolie : socjologiczne studium cmentarzy Katowic
The book entitled Necropolis. Sociological Study of the Cemeteries of Katowice, is an attempt to description of the burial spaces on the example of one city. Cemeteries shall be treated as a cultural text, reproduced in various forms of social practices. Reading this cultural text allows to reconstruct contemporary roles and significance of urban cemeteries, and describe construction of the graveyards and show typical activities undertaken in their spaces. The opening chapter clarifies the social history of the funeral spaces of Europe described terms of in four stages of development. The further part is devoted to necropolis of the particular city - Katowice. The author makes a description of the form, shape and infrastructure of cemeteries and reminds history of the city. Another part of the work is a theoretical debate on urban issues, including emphasis on urban sociology. The continuum: space - the city - a place - non - place is explained, as well as the functional division of urban space. Than graveyards are described in terms of various sciences. In this part of the book preliminary analysis of research on functions of Katowice burial spaces are related. A consequence of above is construction of the typology of modern graveyards functions in sociological terms. The rest of the book is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of results of empirical studies (combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods) carried out in Katowice. It begins with description of burial spaces treated as separated areas of the city; the second aspect of the analysis is a description of cemeteries’ structure; another is focused on the functioning of graveyards; the last one specifies the meaning of the cemeteries for the residents of the city. This approach allows to recreate multi-faceted image of urban cemeteries. Firstly, image of necropolis with permanent and temporary components of the visual universe is analyzed. Secondly, events that took place within the cemeteries and practices associated with visiting the graveyards are described, as well as the way of functioning of cemeteries – their daily, monthly and yearly rhythm. Thirdly, answer to the question about the meaning and place of burial spaces in the minds of Katowice residents is given. Among the most important conclusions of work it should be noted that the residents of Katowice believe that burial places have important socio-cultural role. Cemeteries are described as important, meaningful and long-lasting spaces; areas of interaction and symbolic exchange. It is because, among other things: the universality of visits to cemeteries, what is associated with their rhythm of functioning; a multitude of activities undertaken in cemeteries (not only those related to its first roles); an affection to the image of tombstones; awareness that cemeteries are not only a places of remembrance for everyone who buried their relatives there, but also for the city, region or even the country; the conviction that cemeteries should be show the youngest, to familiarize them with the historical heritage and create a kind of symbolic attachment with the ancestors
Między Akademią a awangardą : studium amerykańskiego pola sztuki przełomu XIX i XX wieku
Artykuł poświęcony jest rekonstrukcji charakteru amerykańskiego pola sztuki
na przełomie XIX i XX wieku w perspektywie teorii Pierre’a Bourdieu. Dokonując
interpretacji zgromadzonych w Stanach Zjednoczonych materiałów,
przeprowadzono analizę pola sztuki przełomu wieków w USA. Wydarzenia
tamtego okresu – emancypacja części artystów spod wpływu Akademii, założenie
samodzielnych szkół artystycznych, powstanie niezależnych galerii,
powołanie krytyki artystycznej, organizacja kolejnych wystaw amerykańskiej
sztuki współczesnej, otwarcie Armory Show (1913), wreszcie zerwanie ze
stylem akademickim – stanowiły pierwszą fazę autonomizacji pola sztuki
w Stanach Zjednoczonych. W artykule omówiono proces konstytucji i pierwotnej
emancypacji amerykańskiego pola sztuki, a równocześnie wskazano
uczestników gry w świecie artystycznym; określono ich rolę i znaczenie;
opisano ich wzajemne relacje i zależności; wyjaśniono, o jakiego typu profity
toczyła się gra statusowa w polu. Z drugiej strony określono dynamikę zmienności
charakteru tych elementów w sytuacji zmiany społecznej zachodzącej
w USA. Ze względu na wielowymiarowy charakter transformacji w polu
rozpatrzono ją także w kategoriach rewolucji symbolicznej
Zróżnicowanie kulturowe a świat artystyczny : przypadek Nowego Jorku przełomu XIX i XX wieku
Celem artykułu jest opis powiązań między zjawiskami w nowojorskim świecie artystycznym
i społeczeństwie amerykańskim przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Analiza wpisuje
się w nurt badań poświęconych kwestii wielokulturowości, uzupełniając je o perspektywę
socjologii historycznej i socjologii kultury artystycznej. Do pierwszych lat XX wieku
instytucje, jak nowojorska National Academy of Design, narzucały artystom tradycyjne
style malarskie będące konsekwencją obowiązujących wówczas w USA norm i wartości
wiktoriańskich. Praktyki te miały charakter przemocy symbolicznej, propagowały bowiem
model społeczeństwa opartego na przewadze społecznej i kulturowej angloamerykanów.
Sprzeciw wobec dominacji układu angloamerykańskiego wyrażały różne środowiska,
w świecie sztuki między innymi twórcy związani z The Ashcan School, w świecie nauki
postępowi intelektualiści. Ich aktywność przyczyniła się do transformacji społeczeństwa
amerykańskiego w stronę porządku nowoczesnego w wymiarze kulturowym i społecznym
Wirtualne cmentarze
wspomnianych tendencji. Spełnia on podwójną rolę — jest płaszczyzną
skrajnie spersonalizowanej pamięci o bliskich, jak i miejscem
wytwarzanym przez użytkowników sieci dla spełnienia ich
własnych potrzeb (wspomnień, godzenia się ze śmiercią)
Labirynt - od starożytności do ponowoczesności. Figura uniwersalna
The article constitutes an attempt at analyzing the figure of the labyrinth,
which has existed in the Western culture since antiquity until the present times.
The author follows the conception of the labyrinth based upon the assumption
that even in the oldest civilizations, the labyrinth was conceived of as more
than just a structure. Entering a labyrinth involved an inherent change in the
ontological situation of the external world, subjected to the complex process of
crossing the threshold. This architectural curiosity has continued to intrigue
scholars and artists across the ages, becoming at the same time a reflection of
the dominant intellectual, cultural and social trends at the time. The labyrinth,
then, emerges as a construct which describes the external world. According to
that assumption, in the second part of the article, the concept of the labyrinth
is used to describe the postmodern reality
Nekropolie katowickiego pogranicza
The article discusses cemetery issues as the object of sociological analyses. The necropolis treated as a cultural text carrier may constitute a component that facilitates the interpretation of social vicissitude of surrounding places. The cemetery itself, which brings to mind the palimpsest figure, can be analyzed from many points of view. This article has used the example of three old Katowice necropoleis in order to reconstruct
on the basis of their functioning the vicissitude of the tricultural borderland community which built the city in the second half of 19th century
Foreword
It was July 1938 when Louis Wirth published his “Urbanism as a Way of Life” in the American Journal of Sociology. The paper was seen by many as the one defining the city as a social phenomenon. Looking beyond its physical structure, economic product or cultural institutions, the author discovers those “elements of urbanism which mark it as a distinctive mode of human group life” (Wirth 1938: 4).
Wirth argues that three key characteristics of cities — large population size, social heterogeneity, and population density — contribute to the development of a peculiarly “urban way of life” and a distinct “urban personality”. In
his opinion, for centuries casual observers have noted deep personality differences between urban and rural people and between nature-based and machinebased styles of living
