    Interactive Effects of Early Exclusive Breastfeeding and Pre-Pregnancy Maternal Weight Status on Young Children’s BMI – A Chinese Birth Cohort

    ObjectivesTo assess if the maternal pre-pregnancy weight status (MPWS) alters the association of early infant feeding pattern (at one and third months) with infant body mass index (BMI) in the first two years of life.MethodsA cohort of 2,220 neonates were recruited in a community-based study conducted in China. Body weight and length were measured at birth, at age one and two, with BMI calculated accordingly. The BMI z-scores (BMI-Z) were computed according to the World Health Organization Growth Standard (2006). Feeding patterns were classified as exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), mixed feeding (MF), and formula feeding (FF). General linear models (GLM) were employed to estimate main and interaction effects of EBF and MPWS on children’s BMI-Z.ResultsNo main effect of MPWS was found on child BMI-Z at ages one and two, nor the feeding patterns. An interaction between MPWS and feeding patterns was detected (p<0.05). For children who were formula fed during the first month, those who were born to overweight/obesity (OW/OB) mothers had a significantly greater BMI-Z at ages one and two, compared with those with underweight/normal weight (UW/NW) mothers. FF children had greater BMI-Z at ages one and two compared with their EBF and MF counterparts, when they were born to OW/OB mothers.ConclusionsMaternal pre-pregnancy weight control and early initiation of EBF for children are essential for healthy development in children’s BMI, hence the prevention of early life obesity

    Surgical strategies for treatment of malignant pancreatic tumors: extended, standard or local surgery?

    Tumor related pancreatic surgery has progressed significantly during recent years. Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) with lymphadenectomy, including vascular resection, still presents the optimal surgical procedure for carcinomas in the head of pancreas. For patients with small or low-grade malignant neoplasms, as well as small pancreatic metastases located in the mid-portion of pancreas, central pancreatectomy (CP) is emerging as a safe and effective option with a low risk of developing de-novo exocrine and/or endocrine insufficiency. Total pancreatectomy (TP) is not as risky as it was years ago and can nowadays safely be performed, but its indication is limited to locally extended tumors that cannot be removed by PD or distal pancreatectomy (DP) with tumor free surgical margins. Consequently, TP has not been adopted as a routine procedure by most surgeons. On the other hand, an aggressive attitude is required in case of advanced distal pancreatic tumors, provided that safe and experienced surgery is available. Due to the development of modern instruments, laparoscopic operations became more and more successful, even in malignant pancreatic diseases.     Pipeline Leakage Detection Based on Secondary Phase Transform Cross-Correlation

    Leaks from pipes and valves are a reputational issue in industry. Maintenance of pipeline integrity is becoming a growing challenge due to the serious socioeconomic consequences. This paper presents a secondary phase transform (PHAT) cross-correlation method to improve the performance of the acoustic methods based on cross-correlation for pipeline leakage detection. Acoustic emission signals generated by pipe leakage are first captured by the sensors at different locations, and are subsequently analyzed using the cross-correlation curve to determine whether leakage is occurring. When leakage occurs, time delay estimation (TDE) is further carried out by peak search in the cross-correlation curve between the two sensor signals. In the analysis, the proposed method calculates the secondary cross-correlation function before the PHAT operation. A sinc interpolation method is then introduced for automatic searching the peak value of the cross-correlation curve. Numerical simulations and experimental results confirm the improved performance of the proposed method for noise suppression and accurate TDE compared to the basic cross-correlation method, which may be beneficial in engineering applications

    Pd-Catalyzed Asymmetric Allylation Reaction of 2‑Aryl‑3<i>H</i>‑indol-3-ones with Allyltrimethylsilane

    An efficient method for the first ene-reaction of 2-aryl-3H-indol-3-ones with allyltrimethylsilane has been developed for the first time. The reaction proceeded under the catalysis of Pd(OAc)2 and chiral phosphoric ligand L11 in the presence of Cu(CF3COO)2·XH2O, PivOH, and 5 Å molecular sieves in DMSO at 60 °C. The present methodology can avoid the impact of amine products generated by the reaction on the catalyst, and at the same time, the high catalytic activity of classical palladium catalysts still has catalytic ability for low electrophilic keto-imines. The desired products were furnished in excellent yields with good enantioselectivity

    Development of a specific monoclonal antibody-based ELISA to measure the artemether content of antimalarial drugs.

    Artemether is one of the artemisinin derivatives that are active ingredients in antimalarial drugs. Counterfeit and substandard antimalarial drugs have become a serious problem, which demands reliable analytical tools and implementation of strict regulation of drug quality. Structural similarity among artemisinin analogs is a challenge to develop immunoassays that are specific to artemisinin derivatives. To produce specific antibodies to artemether, we used microbial fermentation of artemether to obtain 9-hydroxyartemether, which was subsequently used to prepare a 9-O-succinylartemether hapten for conjugation with ovalbumin as the immunogen. A monoclonal antibody (mAb), designated as 2G12E1, was produced with high specificity to artemether. 2G12E1 showed low cross reactivities to dihydroartemisinin, artemisinin, artesunate and other major antimalarial drugs. An indirect competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (icELISA) developed showed a concentration causing 50% of inhibition for artemether as 3.7 ng mL⁻Âč and a working range of 0.7-19 ng mL⁻Âč. The icELISA was applied for determination of artemether content in different commercial drugs and the results were comparable to those determined by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. In comparison with reported broad cross activity of anti-artemisinin mAbs, the most notable advantage of the 2G12E1-based ELISA is its high specificity to artemether only
