    The study assessed qualitatively the threat status of all nigerian freshwater fishes using such criteria as rarity, size at maturity, mode of reproduction, human population density, habitat degradation, pollution and range of each species among others. The biology of 48% (129n) of nigerian freshwater species is not well known. Of the 266 known freshwater fishes, 47 species represented 17% are critically endangered, 15 (5%) are endangered , 8(3%), are vulnerable while 23(8%) are near threatened.     The length - weight relationship and condition factor of Citharinus citharus citharus was studied for a period of twelve (12) months from Lake Kainji, Nigeria. Nine hundred and eighty nine (989) fish samples (Citharinus citharus citharus) with total length ranging from 100mm to 530mm and weight ranging from 31.00g to 2250.00g were analysed. The results showed that the values of a, b and r were 0.0039, 3.2134 and 0.8997 respectively. The condition factor(K) values varied from 2.9 to 4.5, which means that the growth pattern of the fish is based on the value of 'a'. the fish species are also living well in the Lake as the 'K' are greater than one

    The gains and pains of externally-funded fisheries development projects in Nigeria: the Kainji Lake example

    Kainji Lake a man-made in Nigeria with .a surface area of 1,270sq kilometers, was constructed for hydro-electricity generation but with a very high potentials for fisheries production. The influx of fishers from all over Nigeria coupled with the haphazard manner the fisheries of the lakewerebeing exploited resulted in the lake being over fished (Ita, 1983). Between 1993 and 2001 the German Government through its bilateral cooperation agreement with Nigeria, funded the fisheries development programme for Kainji Lake. The intervention was not without its gains to the country. Prominent among these gains were the implementation of the first inland community-based fisheries management, reliable fishery statistics for the lake, annual fishers licensing resulting in the generation of about N4 million revenue within four years of its implementation. The project officially terminated in 2001 and was replaced by a body known as the Kainji Lake Fisheries Management Unit to continue with its operations. Five years after the expiration of the technical assistance, the story has changed. This has created some pains in the minds of those who contributed to the success story recorded while the project lasted. This lack of sustainability may discourage future assistance. This paper calls for genuine commitment by our governments is fisheries if to make significant contribution to our national food security

    A survey of fish fauna in Lake Kainji, New Bussa, Niger State

    The survey of the fish fauna in Lake Kainji, Niger State and Kebbi state was carried out for a period of three months from August to October 2003 using fishermen’s catches. Forty two species of fish were identified and these were from the families Osteoglossidae, Gymnarchidae, Mormyridae, Characidae, Citharinidae, Distichodontidae, Cyprinidae Bagridae, Schilbeidae, Clariidae, Malapteruridae, Mochokidae, Channidae, Centropomidae, Cichlidae and Clupeidae. In terms of relative abundance, the family Bagridae has the highest species diversity of 20%, while Osteoglossidae, Citharinidae, Malapteruridae, Mochokidae, Centropomidae and Gymnarcidae had lowest species diversity of 2.5%.The study provides a biogenic history of fish species diversity within this period of the year in the last two decades. The significance of the study is to provide information towards a sustainable exploitation strategy in the community based management of the fisheries of the lake

    Assessment of Dog Owners’ Knowledge on Dog Rabies Vaccination in Rural Communities in Ogun State, Nigeria

    A cross sectional study was designed to assess knowledge of dog owners towards dog rabies vaccination in rural communities in Odeda local government area of Ogun State. A structured questionnaire was administered to 268 dog owners. The questionnaire sought information on demographic characteristics of the dog owners, their association with dogs, and knowledge about dog rabies vaccine. Data obtained were analyzed using chi square and logistic regression with p value set at ≤ 0.05. Dog rabies vaccination coverage in the study area was 4.9%. Most of the respondents (67.2%) were not aware of dog rabies vaccine. Only 3% of the dog owners had good knowledge about rabies vaccination. Socio-economic factors that had significant association with knowledge level were age, occupation, educational level and marital status of the respondents. There was also significant association between age, religion, occupation, educational level, awareness on dog rabies vaccination, knowledge about dog rabies vaccination, danger posed by non vaccinated dogs to the public and other animals and the intention of dog owners to vaccinate their dogs against rabies. One hundred and eighty seven respondents (70%) declared their intention to vaccinate their dogs, although 82% affirmed willingness to pay  for vaccination of their dogs against rabies; however the average amount indicated was only ₦200.00 ($0.57). In conclusion, it is free vaccination of dogs against rabies with an aggressive mass orientation on responsible dog ownership and enlightenment on fatality of clinical rabies through the mass media that can significantly alter the vaccination coverage in the studied community Key words: Rabies, vaccination, dogs, rural communities, intentio

    The identity of Schilbe intermedius in Jebba Lake, Nigeria

    This study attempts to ascertain the identity of Schilbe intermedius (Family: Schilbeidae) in Jebba Lake using quantitative (mophometric and meristic) and qualitative (colour and shape) parameters that makes identification easier. One hundred (100) specimens were collected and used for the study. There was relationship between body weight and length of fish (a=0.039, b=2.332, r=5.96). The parameters are similar to description of other authors. There is also absence of adipose fin found in the species, which is due to the geographical location
