Right Ampullary Ectopic Pregnancy Following Bilateral Tubal Ligation Using Spring Clips.

Pregnancy is unlikely to occur in women who have undergone sterilization. However when it occurs, there is a substantial risk that it will be an ectopic pregnancy. We report a case of right unruptured ampullary ectopic gestation following tubal sterilization with spring clips 6 years prior to presentation. The likely aetiology may be spontaneous reanastomosis. Keywords: Ectopic, Bilateral Tubal ligation, Spring Clips

The study was carried out to determine the comparative pathogenic response of six cultivars of soybean; TGx 1844-18E, TGx 1448-2E, TGx 1910-8F, TGx 1019-2EN, TGx 1910-8F and TGx 1876-4E to single and mixed infections with cowpea mottle virus and cucumber mosaic virus. The experiment was conducted in the screenhouse at the crop production pavilion, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara state Nigeria. The results of the experiment revealed that all soybean cultivars were susceptible to single and mixed infection of the two viruses but to seemingly different extent. The single infection with cowpea mottle virus (CMeV), however, caused the most severe symptoms on the soybean cultivars. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) alone was not as severe as the CMeV. The mixed infection of CMeV and CMV did not cause higher severity than CMeV alone indicating that there was little or no synergistic effect between the two viruses on soybean

Purpose: To investigate the ameliorative effect of ethanolic extract of Carica papaya leaves in alloxan - induced diabetic rats. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into five groups of eight animals each. Group A (control) comprised normal healthy animals which were orally administered 1.0 ml of distilled water daily for 21 days while groups B – E consisted of alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Group B comprised diabetic untreated rats, and groups C and D received 1.0 ml of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight of the extract, respectively. Group E received 300 mg/kg of metformin. Results: Administration of the extract to the diabetic rats significantly reduced (p < 0.05) glucose level (123.50 mg/dl), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (1.24 mg/dl) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), while significantly increasing (p < 0.05) high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and total protein level (66.51 g/dl) compared to the diabetic untreated rats. The extract also significantly decreased (p < 0.05) the concentration of serum urea (12.35 mg/dl), creatinine, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) of the diabetic rats. Conclusion: The ethanol leaf extract of Carica papaya ameliorates metabolic disorder caused by diabetes in rats. Keywords: Diabetes, Carica papaya, Glucose, Lipid profile, Alloxan monohydrat

A new poof of multiple solutions of combustions problems

We revisit the combustion problem 1rnddr (rnd&#952dr) +&#955exp(&#952) =0 for the plane (n = 1), cylinder (n = 2) and sphere (n = 3) vessels. Using polynomial approximations. We show that the problem has two (2) solutions. Journal of the Nigerian Association of Mathematical Physics Vol. 10 2006: pp. 497-49

Analysis of the Factors Influencing the Technical Efficiency of Women Rubber Tappers in the Rubber belt of Nigeria

The study analyzed the relationship between technical efficiency of women rubber tappers in Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria, Benin City. A total of 60 women were selected through purposive and random sampling techniques and served with a structured interview schedule. Data collected were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. Results of the analysis indicated that women tappers had a mean age of 33 years, have large family sizes, experienced and tapped a mean of 326 trees/ha with a mean annual output of 2,723 kg of dry rubber. Production function analysis further revealed that 91.40 % of the variations in technical efficiency were explained by the variations in socio - economic variables. Output, family size, education, man days of labour, total trees tapped and wage had positive and significant effect on the technical efficiency of women tappers. It is however recommended that increasing wage, access to quality education will enhance their production efficiency. Fetus-in-fetu

Introduction: Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a pathological condition in which the malformed foetus is found in the body of its twin. We report this rare case of a 3-monthold female baby whose diagnostic work-up suggested a mesenteric cyst but the mass at surgery was a FIF. Discussion: Although current imaging modalities like computerized Tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have a higher Sensitivity for accurate delineation of tissues, cheaper imaging alternatives like plain abdomen and ultrasonography still have a place in the preoperative work-up of FIF Keywords: Fetus-in-fetu, intraabdominal mass, operative diagnosis, teratoma, ultrasonographyAfrican Journal of Paediatric Surgery Vol. 5 (2) 2008: pp. 93-9

Audit of Congenital Fetal Anomalies as Seen on Ultrasound Scan in a Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria

Birth defects are becoming a major health problem in this part of the world. Early diagnosis helps to reduce the burden of perinatal mortality by availing practitioners and patients the option of abortion or prenatal intervention. This study seeks to evaluate the contribution of routine antenatal ultrasonography performed in this centre, to prenatal diagnosis of fetal structural defects. All pregnant women who were referred to the radiology department for obstetric scan from January 2000 to December 2007 were included in this study. The mean age of the patients was 26.2 +/- 5 years, while the mean gestational age at examination was 28 weeks +/- 2 weeks. There were 8753 patients, and 64 congenital anomalies were correctly diagnosed. Polyhydramnious was associated with the majority (48.44%) of congenital anomalies diagnosed, while 12.5% had oligohydramnious. Twenty five (39.06%) of them had normal amniotic fluid volume. Neural tube defects were the commonest type of anomalies, followed by gastrointestinal and renal defects. Most facial, chromosomal and cardiac defects were missed. To improve the diagnosing ability for fetal congenital anomalies, sonologists must be properly trained and the number of patients seen per clinic must be restricted to that which the sonologist would conveniently cope with. Early antenatal scan will improve the detection rate.
