Influence of suspension viscosity on Brownian relaxation of filler particles
Brownian relaxation caused by Brownian movement of particles in suspensions can macroscopically be probed by small-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments. Phenomenological considerations suggest a direct proportionality between suspension viscosity and Brownian relaxation times. To verify this relation experimentally, a set of nanocomposite suspensions with viscosities varying over five decades is presented. The suspensions are chosen in a way to ensure that particle-particle interactions and average particle-particle distances are identical so that they can be used as a model system to study the mere influence of suspension viscosity on Brownian relaxation. The suggested linear relationship between suspension viscosity and Brownian relaxation time can be confirmed. Moreover, a verification of a recently introduced characteristic timescale for Brownian relaxation is presented
The Inventory routing problem with demand moves
ABSTRACT: In the Inventory Routing Problem, customer demand is satisfied from inventory which is replenished with capacitated vehicles. The objective is to minimize total routing and inventory holding cost over a time horizon. If the customers are located relatively close to each other, one has the opportunity to satisfy the demand of a customer by inventory stored at another nearby customer. In the optimization of the customer replenishments, this option can be included to lower total costs. This is for example the case for ATMs in urban areas where an ATM-user that wants to withdraw money could be redirected to another ATM. To the best of our knowledge, the possibility of redirecting end-users is new to the operations research literature and has not been implemented, but is being considered, in the industry. We formulate the Inventory Routing Problem with Demand Moves in which demand of a customer can (partially) be satisfied by the inventory of a nearby customer at a service cost depending on the quantity and the distance. We propose a branch-price-and-cut solution approach which is evaluated on problem instances from the literature. Cost improvements over the classical IRP of up to 10% are observed with average savings around 3%
Analysis of a Large Sample of Neutrino-Induced Muons with the ArgoNeuT Detector
ArgoNeuT, or Argon Neutrino Test, is a 170 liter liquid argon time projection
chamber designed to collect neutrino interactions from the NuMI beam at Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory. ArgoNeuT operated in the NuMI low-energy beam
line directly upstream of the MINOS Near Detector from September 2009 to
February 2010, during which thousands of neutrino and antineutrino events were
collected. The MINOS Near Detector was used to measure muons downstream of
ArgoNeuT. Though ArgoNeuT is primarily an R&D project, the data collected
provide a unique opportunity to measure neutrino cross sections in the 0.1-10
GeV energy range. Fully reconstructing the muon from these interactions is
imperative for these measurements. This paper focuses on the complete kinematic
reconstruction of neutrino-induced through-going muons tracks. Analysis of this
high statistics sample of minimum ionizing tracks demonstrates the reliability
of the geometric and calorimetric reconstruction in the ArgoNeuT detector
Wide-angle elastic scattering and color randomization
Baryon-baryon elastic scattering is considered in the independent scattering
(Landshoff) mechanism. It is suggested that for scattering at moderate
energies, direct and interchange quark channels contribute with equal color
coefficients because the quark color is randomized by soft gluon exchange
during the hadronization stage. With this assumption, it is shown that the
ratio of cross sections at CM angle
decreases from a high energy value of R_{\pbar p / pp} \approx 1/2.7, down to
R_{\pbar p / pp} \approx 1/28, compatible with experimental data at moderate
energies. This sizable fall in the ratio seems to be characteristic of the
Landshoff mechanism, in which changes at the quark level have a strong effect
precisely because the hadronic process occurs via multiple quark scatterings.
The effect of color randomization on the angular distribution of proton-proton
elastic scattering and the cross section ratio is also discussed.Comment: 18 pages, latex2e, 4 uuencoded figures, include
