Transplacental induction of membranous nephropathy in a neonate
We report a case of renal failure in a newborn infant due to membranous glomerulonephritis. The patient was anuric in the first 3 weeks of life, after which renal function recovered. The serum of the mother contained IgG antibodies which reacted with tubular brush borders and glomeruli of adult and fetal human kidneys. Reactivity with renal epithelium from human kidneys was detected. We suggest that a transplacental, passive Heymann nephritis-like mechanism was the pathogenesis of the neonate's symptoms, although the antigen(s) involved was shown not to be gp 330 or any of the renal antigens known to be involved in experimental nephropathies

Active Galaxies in the UV
In this article we present different aspects of AGN studies demonstrating the
importance of the UV spectral range. Most important diagnostic lines for
studying the general physical conditions as well as the metalicities in the
central broad line region in AGN are emitted in the UV. The UV/FUV continuum in
AGN excites not only the emission lines in the immediate surrounding but it is
responsible for the ionization of the intergalactic medium in the early stages
of the universe. Variability studies of the emission line profiles of AGN in
the UV give us information on the structure and kinematics of the immediate
surrounding of the central supermassive black hole as well as on its mass

Surgical site infection following surgery for hand trauma: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Surgical site infection is the most common healthcare-associated infection. Surgical site infection after surgery for hand trauma is associated with increased antibiotic prescribing, re-operation, hospital readmission and delayed rehabilitation, and in severe cases may lead to amputation. As the risk of surgical site infection after surgery for hand trauma remains unclear, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of all primary studies of hand trauma surgery, including randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, case-control studies and case series. A total of 8836 abstracts were screened, and 201 full studies with 315,618 patients included. The meta-analysis showed a 10% risk of surgical site infection in randomized control trials, with an overall risk of 5% when all studies were included. These summary statistics can be used clinically for informed consent and shared decision making, and for power calculations for future clinical trials of antimicrobial interventions in hand trauma

Yorkshire Enhanced Stop Smoking study (YESS): a protocol for a randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effect of adding a personalised smoking cessation intervention to a lung cancer screening programme
Introduction:Integration of smoking cessation (SC) into lung cancer screening (LCS) is essential to optimise clinical and cost effectiveness. The most effective way to use this “teachable moment” is unclear. The Yorkshire Enhanced Stop Smoking study (YESS) will measure the effectiveness of a SC service integrated within the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial (YLST) and will test the efficacy of a personalised SC intervention, incorporating incidental findings detected on the low-dose computed tomography scan performed as part of YLST.Methods and analysis: Unless explicitly declined, all smokers enrolled in YLST will see a Smoking Cessation Practitioner (SCP) at baseline and receive smoking cessation support over 4-weeks comprising behavioural support, pharmacotherapy and/or a commercially available e-cigarette. Eligible smokers will be randomised (1:1 in permuted blocks of random size up to size 6) to receive either an enhanced, personalised smoking cessation support package, including CT scan images, or continued SBP. Anticipated recruitment is 1040 smokers (January 2019 – December 2020). The primary objective is to measure 7-day point prevalent carbon monoxide (CO) validated smoking cessation after 3-months. Secondary outcomes include CO validated cessation at 4-weeks and 12-months, self-reported continuous cessation at 4-weeks, 3-month and 12-months, attempts to quit smoking and changes in psychological variables, including perceived risk of lung cancer, motivation to quit smoking tobacco, confidence and efficacy beliefs (self and response) at all follow up points. A process evaluation will explore under which circumstances and on which groups the intervention works best, test intervention fidelity and theory test the mechanisms of intervention impact.Ethics and dissemination: This study has been approved by the East Midlands-Derby Research Ethics Committee (18/EM/0199) and the Health Research Authority/Health and Care Research Wales. Results will be disseminated through publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, presentation at conferences and via the YLST website. A novel enzymatically-mediated drug delivery carrier for bone tissue engineering applications: combining biodegradable starch-based microparticles and differentiation agents
In many biomedical applications, the performance
of biomaterials depends largely on their degradation
behavior. For instance, in drug delivery applications, the
polymeric carrier should degrade under physiological
conditions slowly releasing the encapsulated drug. The aim
of this work was, therefore, to develop an enzymaticmediated
degradation carrier system for the delivery of
differentiation agents to be used in bone tissue engineering
applications. For that, a polymeric blend of starch with
polycaprolactone (SPCL) was used to produce a microparticle
carrier for the controlled release of dexamethasone
(DEX). In order to investigate the effect of enzymes on the
degradation behavior of the developed system and release
profile of the encapsulated osteogenic agent (DEX), the
microparticles were incubated in phosphate buffer solution
in the presence of a-amylase and/or lipase enzymes (at
physiological concentrations), at 37 C for different periods
of time. The degradation was followed by gravimetric
measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and
Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the
release of DEX was monitored by high performance liquid
chromatography (HPLC). The developed microparticles
were shown to be susceptible to enzymatic degradation, as observed by an increase in weight loss and porosity with
degradation time when compared with control samples
(incubation in buffer only). For longer degradation times,
the diameter of the microparticles decreased significantly
and a highly porous matrix was obtained. The in vitro
release studies showed a sustained release pattern with
48% of the encapsulated drug being released for a period of
30 days. As the degradation proceeds, it is expected that
the remaining encapsulated drug will be completely
released as a consequence of an increasingly permeable
matrix and faster diffusion of the drug. Cytocompatibility
results indicated the possibility of the developed microparticles
to be used as biomaterial due to their reduced
cytotoxic effects
Fitting the integrated Spectral Energy Distributions of Galaxies
Fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies is an almost
universally used technique that has matured significantly in the last decade.
Model predictions and fitting procedures have improved significantly over this
time, attempting to keep up with the vastly increased volume and quality of
available data. We review here the field of SED fitting, describing the
modelling of ultraviolet to infrared galaxy SEDs, the creation of
multiwavelength data sets, and the methods used to fit model SEDs to observed
galaxy data sets. We touch upon the achievements and challenges in the major
ingredients of SED fitting, with a special emphasis on describing the interplay
between the quality of the available data, the quality of the available models,
and the best fitting technique to use in order to obtain a realistic
measurement as well as realistic uncertainties. We conclude that SED fitting
can be used effectively to derive a range of physical properties of galaxies,
such as redshift, stellar masses, star formation rates, dust masses, and
metallicities, with care taken not to over-interpret the available data. Yet
there still exist many issues such as estimating the age of the oldest stars in
a galaxy, finer details ofdust properties and dust-star geometry, and the
influences of poorly understood, luminous stellar types and phases. The
challenge for the coming years will be to improve both the models and the
observational data sets to resolve these uncertainties. The present review will
be made available on an interactive, moderated web page (sedfitting.org), where
the community can access and change the text. The intention is to expand the
