    Ballistic perfonnance of all-glass, all-aramid and aramid-glass fibre-reinforced phenolic resincomposite laminates has been evaluated against 0.30 in. calibre soft ball and hard armour piercing (AP) bullets. It is observed that mass effective ness of glass fibre phenolic composites against impacts by APbullets can be improved by aramid fibre'reinforcement in the back of laminate.     Determination of Surface Area of Head for Biomedical and other Applications

    A simple, rapid and reproducible method has been devised for measuring the surface area of the head relevant for armour design. In this method, the following stages are involved: (i) securing a kraft paper over the head with the help of elastic band, (ii) tightly folding the paper wherever necessary to make a snug contour-matched paper dome, (iii) marking the folded areas with lines, (iv) spreading the paper and cutting out areas within the folds and the area filling outside the marked periphery of interest, (v) weighing the cut-out pieces and few pieces of known area from the same sheet, and finally (vi) calculating the head-surface area. Preliminary data on 12 volunteers indicated that head-surface area has no significant correlation with their age, total body-surface area calculated from height and weight or with the circumference of their heads. A significant and positive correlation was found with cephalic length. The new method can find application in biomedical studies and head gear designs (e.g. helmets)

    The continuous growth in wireless communication, the demand for sophisticated, simple and low-cost solutions are also increasing. The demand motivated the researchers to indulge into inventing suitable network solutions ranging from wireless sensor networks to wireless ad-hoc networks to Internet of Things (IoT). With the inventions coming from the researchers, the demand for further improvements into the existing researchers have also growth upbound. Initially the network protocols were the demand for research and further improvements. Nevertheless, the IoT devices are started getting used in various fields and started gathering a huge volume of data using complex application. This invites the demands for research on load balancing for IoT networks. Several research attempts were made to overcome the communication overheads caused by the heavy loads on the IoT networks. Theses research attempts proposed to manage the loads in the network by equally distributing the loads among the IoT nodes. Nonetheless, in the due course of time, the practitioners have decided to move the data collected by the IoT nodes and the applications processing those data in to the cloud. Hence, the challenge is to build an algorithm for cloud-based load balancer matching with the demands from the IoT network protocols. Hence, this work proposes a novel algorithm for managing the loads on cloud integrated IoT network frameworks. The proposed algorithm utilizes the analytics of loads on cloud computing environments driven by the physical host machines and the virtual environments. The major challenge addressed by this work is to design a load balancer considering the low availability of the energy and computational capabilities of IoT nodes but with the objective to improve the response time of the IoT network. The proposed algorithm for load balancer is designed considering the low effort integrations with existing IoT framework for making the wireless communication world a better place

    Preparation of transversely isotropic test specimen of natural FRP composite - an innovative approach-II

    Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) composites can be broadly classified as synthetic and natural, based on the type of fibers incorporated. Abundantly available natural fibers like toddy palm, sisal, jute and banana are attracting the attention of researchers due to ever increasing demand for lighter, stronger and eco-friendly materials from the industry. However, natural fibers are limited in length, not so uniform in size and behave differently in different atmospheric conditions. Added to this, the inherent tendency of natural fibers to twist and curl in dry conditions poses many problems to researchers while preparing test specimens. Researchers in general and academicians in particular are handicapped by non-availability of relevant literature on fabrication techniques to prepare natural FRP composite test specimens close to their analytical models. Present paper addresses typical problems faced by researchers during preparation of unidirectional continuous fiber reinforced composite test specimen ensuring transversely isotropic nature. Using simple hand tools coupled with a few precautions taken as described herein, prospective researchers can condition natural fibers and prepare composite specimen to suit their requirements.&nbsp

    FRP composites have attracted attention of researchers due to ever increasing demand for lighter and stronger materials from the industry, more so from aerospace and automotive sector. Researchers, particularly in academic institutions, are suffering due to non-availability of detailed information on fabrication techniques for preparing FRP test specimens that are equivalent to an analytical model. Accurate test specimen close to analytical model reduces the compulsion of going for unrealistic assumptions that takes the analysis away from reality. An easy to follow method to design, compute and achieve correct volume fraction is presented in this work. A technique for preparing and dismantling molds with commonly available materials is presented in detail. Using simple tools and tackles coupled with a few precautions followed as described herein, prospective researchers can fabricate FRP test specimen close to their requirement.&nbsp

    Do socio-economic inequalities in infant growth in rural India operate through maternal size and birth weight?

    Background 3·1 million young children die every year from undernutrition. Greater understanding of associations between socio-economic status (SES) and the biological factors that shape undernutrition are required to target interventions. Aim To establish whether SES inequalities in undernutrition, proxied by infant size at 12 months, operate through maternal and early infant size measures. Participants and Methods The sample comprised 347 Indian infants born in 60 villages in rural Andhra Pradesh 2005-2007. Structural equation path models were applied to decompose the total relationship between SES (standard of living index) and length and weight for age Z-scores (LAZ/ WAZ) at 12 months into direct and indirect (operating through maternal BMI and height, birthweight Z-score and LAZ/WAZ at 6 months) paths. Results SES had a direct positive association with LAZ (Standardized coefficient = 0.08, 95% CI = 0.02, 0.13) and WAZ at age 12 months (Standardized coefficient = 0.08, 95%CI = 0.02, 0.15). It also had additional indirect positive associations through increased maternal height and subsequently increased birthweight and WAZ/LAZ at 6 months, accounting for 35% and 53% of the total effect for WAZ and LAZ respectively. Conclusion Findings support targeting evidence based growth interventions towards infants from the poorest families with the shortest mothers. Increasing SES can improve growth for two generations
