A Taxonomic and Ecological Study of the Asilidae of Michigan
Seventy-two species of Asilidae have been recorded from Michigan. An additional seven which may occur are included. Keys to subfamilies, genera and species are given. Two subfamilies and twenty-five genera are represented. A discussion of specific identification, habitat, and distribution is given where possible.
The Laphria canis complex, index complex, and aeatus complex are discussed. One new species, Laphria calvescenta is described. Laphria disparella has been raised from synonymy. Machimus virginicus was removed from Asilus sensu-latu and placed in the genus Machimus
An evaluation of weld metal nitrogen retention and properties in 316NL austenitic stainless steel
A series of tests were conducted using varying levels of nitrogen and helium in a conventional argon shielding gas when welding 316LN austenitic stainless steel. The outcome was that a 15 per cent nitrogen addition to the argon shielding gas had the most significant effect on increasing the weld metal nitrogen. Subsequent additions of helium to the argon 15 per cent nitrogen shielding gas had very little overall benefit. Increasing the nitrogen content of the weld metal had the consequential effects of decreasing the ferrite content and the hardness. As a result of solid solution strengthening, the yield strength increased with increase in nitrogen content. There was an increase in impact toughness as the nitrogen content increased. This was related to the decreased ferrite content associated with the strong austenetizing potential of nitrogen. It was also shown that an almost fully austenitic weld metal could still have very good toughness. In combination with these effects there was no loss in corrosion resistance. The addition of nitrogen to a conventional argon shielding gas presents attractive cost and quality benefits over the established requirement to over alloy the weld filler material with expensive alloys such as nickel
Reflections on two decades of research on sorghum based farming systems in Northern Nigeria and Botswana
A conference paper on research on sorghum based farming systems in Botswana and Northern Nigeria.The paper begins by comparing farming circumstances and sorghum production systems in northern Nigeria and Botswana. The comparison provides a background for characterising farmersā food security strategies. This is followed by a brief review of changes in research approaches that have occurred over the last 20 years in both countries. We propose that there is much complementarity between micro-level farming systems work and macro policy analysis in efforts to attain improved food security. On the properties of strange modes
Properties of the so-called strange modes occurring in linear stability calculations of stellar models are discussed. The behaviour of these modes is compared for two different sets of stellar models, for very massive zero-age main-sequence stars and for luminous hydrogen-deficient stars, both with high luminosity-to-mass ratios. We have found that the peculiar behaviour of the frequencies of the strange modes with the change of a control parameter is caused by the pulsation amplitude of a particular eigenmode being strongly confined to the outer part of the envelope, around the density inversion zone. The frequency of a strange mode changes because the depth of the confinement zone changes with the control parameter. Weakly non-adiabatic strange modes tend to be overstable because the amplitude confinement quenches the effect of radiative damping. On the other hand, extremely non-adiabatic strange modes become overstable because the perturbation of radiation force (gradient of radiation pressure) provides a restoring force that can be out of phase with the density perturbation.
