Intensive archaeological survey at Piscina Torta: use of a low-cost RTK portable kit to materialise a UTM grid on the ground

    Get PDF
We tested the use of a low-cost GPS RTK to set up a grid during the intensive archaeological survey of the Piscina Torta site, in the framework of the Salt and Power project of the University of Groningen. We also suggest not using a local grid but the WGS84 UTM grid and naming the single cells with the coordinates of one of its vertices. This would facilitate the use and exchange of the data (e.g. about the potsherds collected in the cell) among the scientific community

Liver transplantation in a patient with complete portal vein thrombosis, is there a surgical way out? A case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Due to the complexity of the surgical procedure portal vein thrombosis (PVT) has long been considered an absolute contraindication to liver transplantation (LT). The presence of a large splenorenal shunt (SRS) could make portal anastomosis a valid option.Presentation of case: We report the case of a 37-year-old female patient with Grade III PVT and a large SRS, who underwent orthotopic LT. Liver was implanted using a 1992-Belghiti piggyback technique and portal anastomosis was performed using the large spleno-renal shunt. We observed good graft reperfusion and postoperative Doppler ultrasound showed normal portal vein flow. She was discharged on postoperative day 7, with an excellent graft function. At six months follow-up, patient is alive with normal hepatic vascularization.Discussion: Due to paucity of reports, there is currently no consensus on the indication to LT and/or surgical technique. In the present case, once the transplant benefit was evaluated, the Grade III PVT was not considered a contraindication to LT.Conclusion: The presence of a Grade III PVT associated with a large SRS should not be considered a contraindication for LT, and the use of the shunt vein should be considered a feasible option to perform portal anastomosis. Precise point positioning with single and dual-frequency multi-GNSS android smartphones

    Get PDF
The new generation of Android smartphones is equipped with high performance Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) chips capable of tracking dual frequency multi-constellation data. Moreover, starting from version 9 of Android users can disable the duty cycle power saving option thus good quality pseudorange and carrier phase raw data are available thus the application of Precise Point Positioning (PPP) algorithm becomes more and more interesting. The main aim of this work is to assess the PPP performance of the first dual-frequency GNSS smartphone produced by Xiaomi equipped with a Broadcom BCM47755. The advantage of acquire dual frequency data is highlighted by comparing the performance obtained by Xiaomi with that of a single frequency smartphone the Samsung S8. The horizontal and vertical accuracy achieved by Xiaomi are of 0.51 m and 6 m respectively while those achieved by Samsung are 5.64 m for 15 m for horizontal and vertical

The Operative management in Bariatric Acute abdomen (OBA) Survey: long-term complications of bariatric surgery and the emergency surgeon\u27s point of view.

Background: The number of bariatric procedures is increasing worldwide. No consensus or guidelines about the emergency management of long-term complications following bariatric surgery are currently available. The aim of this study is to investigate by a web survey how an emergency surgeon approaches this unique group of patients in an emergency medical scenario and to report their personal experience. Method: An international web survey was sent to 197 emergency surgeons with the aim to collect data about emergency surgeons\u27 experience in the management of patients admitted in the emergency department for acute abdominal pain after bariatric surgery. The survey was conceived as a questionnaire composed by 26 (multiple choice and open) questions and approved by a steering committee. Results: One hundred seventeen international emergency surgeons decided to join the project and answered to the web survey with a response rate of 59.39%. Conclusions: The aim of this WSES web survey was to highlight the current management of patients previously submitted to bariatric surgical procedures by ES.Emergency surgeons must be mindful of postoperative bariatric surgery complications. CT scan with oral intestinal opacification may be useful in making a diagnosis if carefully interpreted by the radiologist and the surgeon. In case of inconclusive clinical and radiological findings, when symptoms fail to improve, surgical exploration for bariatric patients presenting acute abdominal pain, by laparoscopy if expertise is available, is mandatory in the first 12-24 h, to have good outcomes and decrease morbidity rate

Efficient three-dimensional survey techniques and their comparison in open software in the archaeological test site of "Ninfeo Maggiore" and "Ninfeo Minore" of Formia (Latina, Italy)

In Europe and beyond, the cultural and archaeological heritage may have considerable extensions of hundreds of square metres if not kilometres. It is then necessary to study highly efficient techniques able , at the same time, to maintain centimetric accuracy. In these contexts, the SLAM technique can be an efficient solution. We tested the latter in a survey of a portion of the so-called Roman Villa of Caposele, also known as Villa Rubino in Formia, (Italy): the "Ninfeo Maggiore"and "Ninfeo Minore"(Major and Minor nymphaeum). The two structures had to be surveyed for both conservation and study purposes and to allow a virtual visit, which is particularly important since they are located inside a private property. The structure is complex, with a succession of rooms and environments in an archaeological complex extending approximately 480 metres in an east-west direction and approximately 50 metres in a south-north direction. We decided to survey both nymphaea with the "GEOSLAM Zeb Horizon", also surveying all the internal connecting rooms and corridors between them. Both nymphaea were also surveyed with a "Faro"terrestrial laser scanning, to allow comparison. To verify the validity of the SLAM on the outside, a survey was carried out using a DJI Matrix drone with laser scanning. The comparison showed very limited deviations whose statistical validation is in progress, demonstrating that the SLAM technique can advantageously be used in such vast archaeological complexes where the efficiency and completeness of the survey is more important than the millimetric accuracy.</p

Drug design and synthesis of first in class PDZ1 targeting NHERF1 inhibitors as anticancer agents

    Get PDF
Targeted approaches aiming at modulating NHERF1 activity, rather than its overall expression, would be preferred to preserve the normal functions of this versatile protein. We focused our attention on the NHERF1/PDZ1 domain that governs its membrane recruitment/displacement through a transient phosphorylation switch. We herein report the design and synthesis of novel NHERF1 PDZ1 domain inhibitors. These compounds have potential therapeutic value when used in combination with antagonists of β-catenin to augment apoptotic death of colorectal cancer cells refractory to currently available Wnt/β-catenin-targeted agents

Quasivariational solutions for first order quasilinear equations with gradient constraint

    Get PDF
We prove the existence of solutions for an evolution quasi-variational inequality with a first order quasilinear operator and a variable convex set, which is characterized by a constraint on the absolute value of the gradient that depends on the solution itself. The only required assumption on the nonlinearity of this constraint is its continuity and positivity. The method relies on an appropriate parabolic regularization and suitable {\em a priori} estimates. We obtain also the existence of stationary solutions, by studying the asymptotic behaviour in time. In the variational case, corresponding to a constraint independent of the solution, we also give uniqueness results
