    On the Coexistence Magnetism/Superconductivity in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CePt3_3Si

    The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in the newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3_3Si has been investigated using the zero-field μ\muSR technique. The μ\muSR data indicate that the whole muon ensemble senses spontaneous internal fields in the magnetic phase, demonstrating that magnetism occurs in the whole sample volume. This points to a microscopic coexistence between magnetism and heavy-fermion superconductivity.Comment: Final version, new figure structure, references correcte

    The temperature (T) dependence of the muon and 63^{63}Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates 1/T11/T_1 in YbCu4.4Au0.6 is reported over nearly four decades. It is shown that for T0T\to 0 1/T11/T_1 diverges following the behaviour predicted by the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory developed by Moriya for a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. On the other hand, the static uniform susceptibility χs\chi_s is observed to diverge as T2/3T^{-2/3} and 1/T1Tχs21/T_1T\propto \chi_s^2, a behaviour which is not accounted for by SCR theory. The application of a magnetic field HH is observed to induce a crossover to a Fermi liquid behaviour and for T0T\to 0 1/T11/T_1 is found to obey the scaling law 1/T1(H)=1/T1(0)[1+(μBH/kBT)2]11/T_1(H)= 1/T_1(0)[1+(\mu_BH/k_BT)^2]^{-1}.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    'White knuckle care work' : violence, gender and new public management in the voluntary sector

    Drawing on comparative data from Canada and Scotland, this article explores reasons why violence is tolerated in non-profit care settings. This article will provide insights into how workers' orientations to work, the desire to care and the intrinsic rewards from working in a non-profit context interact with the organization of work and managerially constructed workplace norms and cultures (Burawoy, 1979) to offset the tensions in an environment characterized by scarce resources and poor working conditions. This article will also outline how the same environment of scarce resources causes strains in management's efforts to establish such cultures. Working with highly excluded service users with problems that do not respond to easy interventions, workers find themselves working at the edge of their endurance, hanging on by their fingernails, and beginning to participate in various forms of resistance; suggesting that even among the most highly committed, 'white knuckle care' may be unsustainable

    Magnetic order and spin dynamics across a ferromagnetic quantum critical point: μ\muSR investigations of YbNi4_4(P1x_{1-x}Asx_x)2_2

    In the quasi-1D heavy-fermion system YbNi4_4(P1x_{1-x}Asx_x)2_2 the presence of a ferromagnetic (FM) quantum critical point (QCP) at xcx_c 0.1\approx 0.1 with unconventional quantum critical exponents in the thermodynamic properties has been recently reported. Here, we present muon-spin relaxation (μ\muSR) experiments on polycrystals of this series to study the magnetic order and the low energy 4ff-electronic spin dynamics across the FM QCP. The zero field μ\muSR measurements on pure YbNi4_4(P2_{2} proved static long range magnetic order and suggested a strongly reduced ordered Yb moment of about 0.04μB\mu_B. With increasing As substitution the ordered moment is reduced by half at x=0.04x = 0.04 and to less than 0.005 μB\mu_B at x=0.08x=0.08. The dynamic behavior in the μ\muSR response show that magnetism remains homogeneous upon As substitution, without evidence for disorder effect. In the paramagnetic state across the FM QCP the dynamic muon-spin relaxation rate follows 1/T1TTnT_{1}T\propto T^{-n} with 1.01±0.04n1.13±0.061.01 \pm 0.04 \leq n \leq 1.13 \pm 0.06. The critical fluctuations are very slow and are even becoming slower when approaching the QCP.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Evidence for Cooper Pair Diffraction on the Vortex Lattice of Superconducting Niobium

    We investigated the Abrikosov vortex lattice (VL) of a pure Niobium single crystal with the muon spin rotation (\mu SR) technique. Analysis of the \mu SR data in the framework of the BCS-Gor'kov theory allowed us to determine microscopic parameters and the limitations of the theory. With decreasing temperature the field variation around the vortex cores deviates substantially from the predictions of the Ginzburg-Landau theory and adopts a pronounced conical shape. This is evidence of partial diffraction of Cooper pairs on the VL predicted by Delrieu for clean superconductors.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Constrained by managerialism : caring as participation in the voluntary social services

    The data in this study show that care is a connective process, underlying and motivating participation and as a force that compels involvement in the lives of others, care is at least a micro-participative process. Care or affinity not only persisted in the face of opposition, but it was also used by workers as a counter discourse and set of practices with which to resist the erosion of worker participation and open up less autonomized practices and ways of connecting with fellow staff, clients and the communities they served. The data suggest that while managerialism and taylorised practice models may remove or reduce opportunities for worker participation, care is a theme or storyline that gave workers other ways to understand their work and why they did it, as well as ways they were prepared to resist managerial priorities and directives, including the erosion of various kinds of direct and indirect participation. The degree of resistance possible, even in the highly technocratic worksite in Australia, shows that cracks and fissures exist within managerialism

    Muon-spin rotation measurements of the penetration depth of the Mo_3Sb_7 superconductor

    Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth \lambda in superconductor Mo_3Sb_7 (T_c~2.1 K) were carried out by means of muon-spin-rotation. The absolute values of \lambda, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter \kappa, the first H_{c1} and the second H_{c2} critical fields at T=0 are \lambda(0)=720(100)nm, \kappa(0)=55(9), \mu_0H_{c1}(0)=1.8(3)mT, and \mu_0H_{c2}(0)=1.9(2)T. The zero temperature value of the superconducting energy gap \Delta(0) was found to be 0.35(1)meV corresponding to the ratio 2\Delta(0)/k_BT_c=3.83(10). At low temperatures \lambda^{-2}(T) saturates and becomes constant below T~0.3T_c, in agreement with what is expected for s-wave BCS superconductors.
