    Airframe Noise Reduction Studies and Clean-Airframe Noise Investigation

    Acoustic wind tunnel tests were conducted of a wing model with modified leading edge slat and trailing edge flap. The modifications were intended to reduce the surface pressure response to convected turbulence and thereby reduce the airframe noise without changing the lift at constant incidence. Tests were conducted at 70.7 and 100 m/sec airspeeds, with Reynolds numbers 1.5 x 10 to the 6th power and 2.1 x 10 to the 6th power. Considerable reduction of noise radiation from the side edges of a 40 deflection single slotted flap was achieved by modification to the side edge regions or the leading edge region of the flap panel. Total far field noise was reduced 2 to 3 dB over several octaves of frequency. When these panels were installed as the aft panel of a 40 deg deflection double slotted flap, 2 dB noise reduction was achieved

    Characterization of a spheromak plasma gun: The effect of refractory electrode coatings

    In order to investigate the proposition that high-Z impurities are responsible for the anomalously short lifetime of the Caltech spheromak, the center electrode of the spheromak plasma gun has been coated with a variety of metals (bare steel, copper, nickel, chromium, rhodium, and tungsten). Visible light (230–890 nm) emitted directly from the plasma in the gun breech was monitored for each of the coated electrodes. Plasma density and temperature and spheromak lifetime were compared for each electrode. Results indicate little difference in gun performance or macroscopic plasma parameters. The chromium and tungsten electrodes performed marginally better in that a previously reported helicity injection effect [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64, 2144 (1990)] is only observed in discharges using these electrode coatings. There are subtle differences in the detailed line emission spectra from the different electrodes, but the spectra are remarkably similar. The fact that (1) contrary to expectations, attempts to reduce high-Z impurities had only marginal effect on the spheromak lifetime coupled with (2) an estimate of Zeff<2 based on a 0-D model suggests that it is not impurities but some other mechanism that limits the lifetime of small, cold spheromaks.     UAV as a Reliable Wingman: A Flight Demonstration

    In this brief, we present the results from a flight experiment demonstrating two significant advances in software enabled control: optimization-based control using real-time trajectory generation and logical programming environments for formal analysis of control software. Our demonstration platform consisted of a human-piloted F-15 jet flying together with an autonomous T-33 jet. We describe the behavior of the system in two scenarios. In the first, nominal state communications were present and the autonomous aircraft maintained formation as the human pilot flew maneuvers. In the second, we imposed the loss of high-rate communications and demonstrated an autonomous safe “lost wingman” procedure to increase separation and reacquire contact. The flight demonstration included both a nominal formation flight component and an execution of the lost wingman scenario

    Poincaré maps define topography of Vlasov distribution functions consistent with stochastic dynamics

    In a recent paper [A. D. Bailey et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 34, 3124 (1993)], the authors presented direct planar laser induced fluorescence measurements of the oscillatory ion fluid velocity field in the presence of a large amplitude drift-Alfven wave. Surprisingly, the measured speeds were an order of magnitude lower than predicted by standard fluid theory, yet the flow pattern was consistent with the fluid theory. A new model, based on the connection between stochasticity and bulk behavior, is presented which gives insights into the cause of this behavior. It is shown that when particle motion is stochastic, invariant sets of a 'Poincaré map' define a flat-topped particle distribution function consistent with both the electromagnetic field driving the Vlasov equation and the fine-scale single particle dynamics. The approach is described for the general case and explored for a slab model of the observed drift wave

    Over fifty original prints by renowned artists from the sixteenth through the early nineteenth century, including Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Théodore Géricault, and Francisco de Goya, among many others, are featured inThe Plains of Mars: European War Prints, 1500-1825. On loan from the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the works of art included in this exhibition examine the topics of war and peace, propaganda, heroism, brutal conflicts, and the harrowing aftermath of battle. Spanning from the Renaissance to the Romantic periods and encompassing a wide geographic scope including Italy, Germany, France, Spain, the Low Countries, England, and North America, the prints depict triumphant Renaissance soldiers, devastating scenes of violence, and satirical caricatures of political figures. Also on display is Goya’s compelling “Disasters of War” series, completed in response to the brutality of the Spanish War of Independence. Goya’s prints serve as a powerful testament to the horrors faced by both soldiers and civilians. Under the direction of Professor Felicia Else and Shannon Egan, Melissa Casale ‘19 and Bailey Harper ‘19 have researched and written didactic labels, catalogue essays, and created an interactive digital interface to complement the exhibition. Together, Melissa and Bailey will lead public tours of the exhibition. A Gallery Talk by Prof. Peter Carmichael will draw connections between the depictions of warfare on view in the Gallery with representations of the American Civil War. James Clifton, Director of the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will be delivering a lecture in conjunction with the exhibition. Dr. Clifton, who also serves as curator of Renaissance and Baroque painting at MFAH, curated the exhibition in its first iteration and wrote the exhibition catalogue (published by Yale University Press). Dr. Clifton’s lecture not only will provide an overview of the exhibition, but also will focus on the concept of “mediated war.” A full-color catalogue with images and essays by Bailey Harper ’19 and Melissa Casale ’19, under the supervision of Profs.     Diffusive Atomistic Dynamics of Edge Dislocations in Two Dimensions

    The fundamental dislocation processes of glide, climb, and annihilation are studied on diffusive time scales within the framework of a continuum field theory, the Phase Field Crystals (PFC) model. Glide and climb are examined for single edge dislocations subjected to shear and compressive strain, respectively, in a two dimensional hexagonal lattice. It is shown that the natural features of these processes are reproduced without any explicit consideration of elasticity theory or ad hoc construction of microscopic Peierls potentials. Particular attention is paid to the Peierls barrier for dislocation glide/climb and the ensuing dynamic behavior as functions of strain rate, temperature, and dislocation density. It is shown that the dynamics are accurately described by simple viscous motion equations for an overdamped point mass, where the dislocation mobility is the only adjustable parameter. The critical distance for the annihilation of two edge dislocations as a function of separation angle is also presented.Comment: 13 pages with 17 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    2dF-AAOmega spectroscopy of massive stars in the Magellanic Clouds: The north-eastern region of the Large Magellanic Cloud

    We present spectral classifications from optical spectroscopy of 263 massive stars in the north-eastern region of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observed two-degree field includes the massive 30 Doradus star-forming region, the environs of SN1987A, and a number of star-forming complexes to the south of 30 Dor. These are the first classifications for the majority (203) of the stars and include eleven double-lined spectroscopic binaries. The sample also includes the first examples of early OC-type spectra (AAOmega 30 Dor 248 and 280), distinguished by the weakness of their nitrogen spectra and by C IV 4658 emission. We propose that these stars have relatively unprocessed CNO abundances compared to morphologically normal O-type stars, indicative of an earlier evolutionary phase. From analysis of observations obtained on two consecutive nights, we present radial-velocity estimates for 233 stars, finding one apparent single-lined binary and nine (>3sigma) outliers compared to the systemic velocity; the latter objects could be runaway stars or large-amplitude binary systems and further spectroscopy is required to investigate their nature.Comment: Accepted by A&

    A simple procedure is described for determining the excitation coefficients of an array feed which compensates for the surface distortion of a reflector antenna to improve the radiation pattern in such a way as to approximate the performance of the undistorted antenna.
