Adolescent trajectories of aerobic fitness and adiposity as markers of cardiometabolic risk in adulthood
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether adolescent growth trajectories of aerobic fitness and adiposity were associated with mid-adulthood cardiometabolic risk (CMR). Methods: Participants were drawn from the Saskatchewan Growth and Development Study (1963-1973). Adolescent growth trajectories for maximal aerobic capacity (absolute VO2 (AbsVO2)), skinfolds (SF), representing total body (Sum6SF) and central adiposity (TrunkSF), and body mass index (BMI) were determined from 7 to 17 years of age. In mid-adulthood (40 to 50 years of age), 61 individuals (23 females) returned for follow-ups. A CMR score was calculated to group participants as displaying either high or a low CMR. Multilevel hierarchical models were constructed, comparing the adolescent growth trajectories of AbsVO2, Sum6SF, TrunkSF, and BMI between CMR groupings. Results: There were no significant differences in the adolescent development of AbsVO2, Sum6SF, TrunkSF, and BMI between adult CMR groupings (p > 0.05). Individuals with high CMR accrued 62% greater adjusted total body fat percentage from adolescence to adulthood (p=0.03). Conclusions: Growth trajectories of adolescent aerobic fitness and adiposity do not appear to be associated with mid-adulthood CMR. Individuals should be encouraged to participate in behaviours that promote healthy aerobic fitness and adiposity levels throughout life to reduce lifelong CMR
Differential Cross Section for Higgs Boson Production Including All-Orders Soft Gluon Resummation
The transverse momentum distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs
boson production at the energy of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus on
the dominant gluon-gluon subprocess in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and
incorporate contributions from the quark-gluon and quark-antiquark channels.
Using an impact-parameter -space formalism, we include all-orders
resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons. Our
resummed results merge smoothly at large with the fixed-order
expectations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as they should, with no
need for a matching procedure. They show a high degree of stability with
respect to variation of parameters associated with the non-perturbative input
at low . We provide distributions for Higgs boson masses
from to 200 GeV. The average transverse momentum at zero rapidity
grows approximately linearly with mass of the Higgs boson over the range ~GeV. We provide analogous results
for boson production, for which we compute GeV. The
harder transverse momentum distribution for the Higgs boson arises because
there is more soft gluon radiation in Higgs boson production than in

Sliding blocks with random friction and absorbing random walks
With the purpose of explaining recent experimental findings, we study the
distribution of distances traversed by a block that
slides on an inclined plane and stops due to friction. A simple model in which
the friction coefficient is a random function of position is considered.
The problem of finding is equivalent to a First-Passage-Time
problem for a one-dimensional random walk with nonzero drift, whose exact
solution is well-known. From the exact solution of this problem we conclude
that: a) for inclination angles less than \theta_c=\tan(\av{\mu})
the average traversed distance \av{\lambda} is finite, and diverges when
as \av{\lambda} \sim (\theta_c-\theta)^{-1}; b) at
the critical angle a power-law distribution of slidings is obtained:
. Our analytical results are confirmed by
numerical simulation, and are in partial agreement with the reported
experimental results. We discuss the possible reasons for the remaining

The Japanese model in retrospective : industrial strategies, corporate Japan and the 'hollowing out' of Japanese industry
This article provides a retrospective look at the Japanese model of industrial development. This model combined an institutional approach to production based around the Japanese Firm (Aoki's, J-mode) and strategic state intervention in industry by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). For a long period, the alignment of state and corporate interests appeared to match the wider public interest as the Japanese economy prospered. However, since the early 1990s, the global ambitions of the corporate sector have contributed to a significant 'hollowing out' of Japan's industrial base. As the world today looks for a new direction in economic management, we suggest the Japanese model provides policy-makers with a salutary lesson in tying the wider public interest with those of the corporate sector
Bounds on second generation scalar leptoquarks from the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon
We calculate the contribution of second generation scalar leptoquarks to the
anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (AMMM). In the near future, E-821 at
Brookhaven will reduce the experimental error on this parameter to , an improvement of 20 over its current value.
With this new experimental limit we obtain a lower mass limit of
\ GeV for the second generation scalar leptoquark, when its
Yukawa-like coupling \ to quarks and leptons is taken to be
