    No full text
This study aimed to compare the Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and the Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in terms of the development of narcissism on the basis of Self Psychology Approach. Thirty patients who were diagnosed as NPD, 30 patients who were diagnosed as BPD and 30 control subjects participated in the study. The basic research assumption was that the group diagnosed as NPD would be defensive in the "grandiose self" lure and the group diagnosed as BPD would be defensive in the "idealized parental imago" line according to Self Psychology. For this purpose both of the groups were given the Self Psychology Inventory, which had been then assessed by using the SCID-II. According to the results the BPD group was found to be defensive in "idealized parental imago" line and NPD group was found to be defensive in both "grandiose self" and "idealized parental imago" lines

A Challenging Issue for both Patients and Physicians: Breaking Bad News in Oncology

    No full text
Providing the patients with negative information about diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, in other words breaking bad news, is a complicated process for both the patient and the physician. The oncologists often should break the bad news to patients and their relatives. Bad news in the field of oncology often includes the following processes: telling the diagnosis of cancer, providing information about recurrence or metastasis according to the prognosis of the disease, saying that there is nothing left to do medically, and ultimately telling the relatives of the patient the death of the patient. A negative diagnosis or a negative improvement in prognosis should be explained to the patient (sometimes to the patient's relative) with care, empathic and sensitive attitude because a person is emotionally vulnerable while receiving bad news about his/her health or health of a relative. We will focus, in this article, on the importance of breaking bad news as part of clinical practice in oncology, and we will briefly introduce the protocols developed for the proper conduct of breaking bad news and provide information about what the physician should do in the process of breaking bad news by considering the basic features of breaking bad news protocols

This report presents an evaluation of the impact of the 'Training of Trainers' (TOT) courses conducted since 1997. The effects of TOT programmes were studied using a questionnaire given to the course participants immediately after and again following a minimum period of six months after completion of the course. The 85 participants included in this analysis were medical teachers from the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, of whom 17% were instructors, 39% were associate professors and 44% full professors. Some 72% of the medical teachers stated that they were able to implement the knowledge/skills they had acquired during the TOT course in their teaching. The majority of the participants reported more feedback from students and enhancement of student-faculty interaction in their teaching experience after the course. These results appear promising and indicate that TOT courses indeed motivate the teaching staff and provide them with tools and opportunities for more effective teaching. They also appear to have a lasting impact
