    A growing body of research suggests that effective professional development (PD) can help teachers increase their knowledge, skills and understanding about teaching. Research evidence also indicates that good quality PD enhances teacher self-efficacy. However, there have been few studies that have investigated the relationship between teachers‟ participation in PD and changes in perceived levels of their self-efficacy. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of good quality PD from the perspective of junior secondary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Indonesia. It also aims to find out the relationship between teachers‟ participation in PD and teacher study groups (TSGs) and changes in perceived levels of their self-efficacy. A mixed methods research with a convergent parallel design involving four phases was used in this study. In the first and fourth phases, the initial and follow-up questionnaires were completed by 104 teachers in three districts. The questionnaires consisted of closed questions and open-ended questions. In the second phase, three observations were carried out in each of the three TSGs in the three districts. This focused on how teachers conducted TSG meetings. In the third phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 EFL teachers from three districts. The findings from this study revealed that the participants‟ perceptions of good quality PD seemed to be influenced by the Indonesian cultural context, educational system and policies, and teacher resources. The EFL teachers perceived good quality PD facilitates: increased teachers‟ knowledge and teaching skills, encourages collaboration, and is based on teachers‟ classroom practical needs. The study also revealed that there is a relationship between teachers‟ participation in PD, and TSGs, and changes in perceived levels of their self-efficacy. Of the three aspects of instructional strategy, classroom management, and student engagement, the EFL teachers made the greatest change of their self-efficacy in instructional strategy. However, the participants also saw the importance of having a good understanding of classroom management and student engagement, in addition to instructional strategy. The study suggests that good quality PD for junior secondary EFL teachers in Indonesia needs to give teachers time to talk and work collaboratively, and the content should be based on teachers‟ classroom practical needs. The study also suggests the need to involve teachers in the process of planning, designing, and implementing PD in order to maximize its benefits. Therefore PD, such as TSGs in Indonesia, should be expanded and encouraged by the Indonesian government

    ANALYZING CORONAL MASS EJECTION OF JULY 10, 2005 AND ITS EFFECT ON THE EARTH’S MAGNETOSPHERE

    Abstract A large coronal mass ejection (CME) was occurred on July 10, 2005 08:54 UT at the South‐West solar limb. This was a partial type of CME as the ejected coronal plasma covered partially around the occulting disk of coronagraph. The Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) aboard Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) data were used in detecting CME. The data taken by the Extreme‐ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) as well as Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) that observes the active regions in white‐light wavelength and maps the magnetic field of the photosphere are used to identify the source region of CME. The projected speed of CME perpendicular the Sun‐Earth line is determined to estimate the arrival time at the Earth’s orbit. The speed and location of the source region of CME are used to study the effect of CME to the Earth’s magnetosphere (geo‐effectiveness). It is concluded that the CME’s effect to the Earth’s space environment was relatively small (Dst index greater than –100 nT) due to the source region was located close to the West solar limb.     Activities in Sunspot Group NOAA 9393

    Watukosek Aeronautics and Space Observing Site (WKSO, LAPAN), observed sunspot in daily basis since 1987 using a sketch method. Sunspot group NOAA 9393 (or WKSO 0123) have been observed in March to early of April 2001. The region showed a rapid development during its appearance on the solar disk. The magnetic field of this active region evolved from a simple to a complex configuration (sunspot group type F) within a short period (days). WKSO recognized the sunspot group remains as type F (very active) as long as 8 days. Based on GOES data the active region released as much as 56 flares of type C (small), M (moderate) and X (large) to amount of 28, 24 and 3, respectively, during its appearance from 24 March to 4 April 2001. It is found that prior to X-class flare, there was an increase of activity in C and M-class flare. A rapid emergence of the active region may cause instability in magnetic configuration, and therefore released the magnetic energy in the form of solar flares.     The Effect of Professional Development on Indonesian EFL Teachers’ Self-Efficacy

    This study aims to find out the relationship between teachers’ participation in professional development (PD) and changes in perceived levels of their self-efficacy in the areas of instructional strategy, classroom management, and student engagement. A mixed methods research was used in this study. The findings from this study revealed that there is a relationship between teachers’ participation in PD and changes in perceived levels of their self-efficacy. The findings also revealed that PD was perceived to bring about the greatest change in levels of all participants’ self-efficacy in the area of instructional strategy compared to classroom management and student engagement. The study suggests that one of the characteristics of good quality PD for junior secondary EFL teachers in Indonesia is the content should be based on teachers’ classroom practical needs

    Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memahami bagaimana perancangan dan implementasi program pelatihan berlangsung di dalam sebuah organisasi/institusi. Pelatihan disebut sebagai aktivitas terencana yang digunakan untuk mentransfer atau memodifikasi pengetahuan, keterampilan, dan sikap melalui pengalaman belajar. Ada berbagai alasan yang mengharuskan seseorang/staf menjalani program pelatihan. Mereka perlu mempertahankan tingkat kompetensi, menanggapi tuntutan keadaan yang berubah dan menerapkan pendekatan dan teknologi baru. Kebijakan, prosedur, norma dan prinsip harus menjadi pertimbangan dalam merancang dan melaksanakan program pelatihan. Program pelatihan biasanya dimasukkan ke dalam kerangka kerja untuk meningkatkan working performance secara terus menerus. Mengubah dan meningkatkan praktik membutuhkan lingkungan yang kondusif untuk bekerja, sumber belajar yang sesuai dan penggunaan strategi implementasi yang tepat dan secara terus menerus.     Artikel ini bertujuan untuk: (1) memberikan gambaran tentang pengembangan pendekatan pendidikan dan latihan bahasa Inggris berbasis pengembangan diri; dan (2) memberikan gambaran tentang pengembangan pendekatan praktik pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis pengembangan diri untuk mengembangkan kapasitas peserta diklat. Beberapa temuan menunjukkan bahwa diklat bahasa Inggris selama ini lebih menitikberatkan pada penguasaan bahasa dan pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Berdasar hal tersebut, dikembangkan pendekatan dengan fokus pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang mengarahkan pada optimalisasi pengembangan diri pribadi melalui tugas-tugas yang dilakukan. Kajian dalam tulisan ini dilakukan dengan studi pustaka secara komprehensif terhadap sejumlah referensi terkait dengan konsep diklat, konsep pengembangan diri, dan teori belajar. Kajian tentang konsep diklat menunjukkan bahwa desain dan konten diklat harus disesuaikan dengan perkembangan zaman yang bertujuan untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir peserta diklat dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan yang dihadapi.
