Magneto Rheological Dampers — A New Paradigm in Base Isolation Techniques in Earth Quake Engineering

    Get PDF
Over the past three decades, a great deal of interest has been generated regarding the use of structural protective systems to mitigate the effects of dynamic environmental hazards, such as earth quakes and strong wind, on Civil Engineering structures. These systems usually employ supplemental damping devices to increase the energy dissipation capability of the protected structure. One of the most promising new devices proposed for structural protection is Magneto rheological (MR) fluid dampers because of their mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, low pressure requirements, large force capacity and robustness, this class of devices has been shown to mesh well within application demands and constraints to offer an attractive means of protecting Civil infrastructure systems against dynamic loading. The focus of the paper is to develop a fundamental understanding of large scale MR dampers for the purpose of designing and implementing these “smart” damping devices in large- scale structures for natural hazard mitigation

Adenocarcinoma of Lung Presenting as Unilateral Blindness: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Lung cancer is the most common cause of death among cancers. Over 55% have distant metastasis at presentation. Intraocular metastasis is a rare site of spread. It is extremely unusual for lung cancer to present primarily with features of choroidal involvement before any respiratory symptoms are manifest.Case Report: A 53 year old lady presented with protrusion of the left eye followed by sudden unilateral painless loss of vision one month later. She was diagnosed to have a left retinal detachment due to a choroidal mass in the left eye. Enucleation was done and showed a metastatic carcinoma of unknown primary. Immunohistochemistry was suggestive of adenocarcinoma with primary in the lung. She had a right mid-lobe lesion for which biopsy was attempted but failed. She also had multiple skeletal metastases and small lesions in the liver. Mutation analysis on the enucleation specimen was positive for exon 19 mutation of EGFR gene and she was started on single agent oral gefitinib 250mg daily and bisphosphonates. Reassessment done 3 months showed reduction in the size of the primary lung lesion with resolution of the liver lesions. Skeletal lesions remained the same. Conclusion: This case of choroidal metastasis presenting with retinal detachment demonstrates a very rare initial presentation of adenocarcinoma of the lung and highlights the need to look for a primary in the lung in cases of choroidal metastasis

Trust Score based Optimized Cluster Routing (TSOCR) approach for Enhancing the Lifetime of Wireless Sensor Networks

Energy efficiency is the most significant obstacle that Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) must overcome, and the desire for solutions that maximize energy efficiency will never go away. There are a variety of methods that can be utilized to improve energy efficiency, with data transmission as the primary driver of maximum energy consumption. The transmission of data from the source to destination nodes uses more energy. When the transmission of data is handled better, the energy efficiency is improved and the lifetime of the network is increased. The purpose of this research is to propose an Trust Score based Optimized Cluster Routing (TSOCR)  scheme for WSNs, which is based on Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). A total trust score is derived by combining the results of computing three distinct trust scores, such as the direct, indirect, and the most recent trust score. The path that has the highest trust score is chosen as the route and employed for data transmission. The effectiveness of the work is evaluated by looking at factors such as the rate of packet delivery, the latency, the amount of energy consumed and the lifetime of the network

Objective: The main objective of present study was to develop and validate a reverse phase enantioselective chiral high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for enantiomeric resolution of Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate; it decreases the HIV infection in human body. The method is specific, rapid, precise and accurate for the separation and determination of (S)-isomer in tenofovir disoproxil fumarate drug substance form. Methods: The S-Isomer of Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate was resolved on a Chiral AGP (150 × 4.0 mm, 5 µm) column (L-41) using a mobile phase system containing 0.1 M ammonium acetate in water pH 6.8 with ammonia solution and methanol in the ratio of (85:15 v/v). The mobile phase was set at a flow rate of 0.8 ml/min and the volume injected was 10μl for every injection. The detection wavelength was set at 260 nm and the column temperature was set at 15 °C.Results: The proposed method was productively applied for the quantitative determination of (S)-isomer in Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate drug substance form. The linear regression analysis data for calibration plots showed a good linear relationship over a concentration range of 0.125 to 3.75 µg/ml for (S)-isomer, 0.125-3.75 µg/ml for Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. The mean values of the correlation coefficient were 0.999 and 0.999 for (S)-isomer and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. The method was validated as per the ICH guidelines. The detection limit (LOD) was about 0.05 µg/ml and quantitation limit (LOQ) was about 0.125 µg/ml for (S)-isomer and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. The relative standard deviation was found to be 0.78 % for (S)-isomer in Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Conclusion: The developed and validated HPLC method and the statistical analysis showed that the method is repeatable and selective for the estimation of the (S)-isomer of the Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate drug substance

Organophosphorus compound (OPC) poisoning is one of the most common poisons in rural India. We present a 27 year old female patient who came to us in altered sensorium and froathing from mouth with an alleged history of OPC intake about 2 hours back. The patient was intubated, connected to a mechanical ventilator and atropinized. On day 3 of admission patient had elevated renal parameters and was diagnosed as Acute Renal Failure due to acute tubular necrosis probably poison induced. On day 4 of admission she suffered an acute cardiac arrest and was resuscitated; following this she gradually improved and after 3weeks of intensive management her sensorium deteriorated. MRI Brain showed Diffuse Cerebral White Matter Leukodystrophy due to DEMYELINATION (Hypoxia induced). KEYWORDS: Organophosphorus compound poisoning; Acute renal failure; Demyelination; Leukoencephalopathy

During the Integrated Campaign for Aerosols, gases and Radiation Budget (ICARB) experiment of ISRO-GBP, altitude profiles of mass concentrations of aerosol black carbon (M) and total (composite) aerosols (M) in the lower troposphere were made onboard an aircraft from an urban location, Chennai (13.04 °N, 80.17 °E). The profiling was carried out up to 3 km (AGL) in eight levels to obtain higher resolution in altitude. Besides, to explore the horizontal gradient in the vertical profiles, measurements were made at two levels [500m (within ABL) and 1500m (above ABL)] from ~10 °N to 16°N and ~80 °E to 84°E. The profiles showed a significant vertical extent of aerosols over coastal and offshore regions around Chennai with BC concentrations (~2 μg m) and its contribution to composite aerosols remaining at the same level (between 8 to 10% for FBC) as at the surface. Even though the values are not unusually high as far as an urban location is concerned, but their constancy throughout the vertical column will have important implications to climate impact of aerosols
