    Efficient Handwritten Digit Classification using User-defined Classification Algorithm

    In automatic numeral digit recognition system, feature selection is most important factor for achieving high recognition performance. To achieve this, the present paper proposed system for isolated handwritten numeral recognition using number of contours, skeleton features, Number of watersheds, and ratio between the numbers of foreground pixels in upper half part and lower half-part of the numerical digit image. Based on these features the present paper designed user-defined classification algorithm for handwritten digit recognition. To find the effectiveness of the proposed features, these features are given as an input for standard classification algorithms like k–nearest neighbor classifier, Support Vector Machines and other classification algorithms and evaluate the results.  The experimental result proves that the proposed features are well suited for handwritten digit recognition for both user and standard classification algorithms.     Characterization 410 Stainless Steel by Vacuum Tempering Process

    It has been reported that low-temperature vacuum tempering of 410 stainless steel hard layer improving wear resistance and hardness. Grade 410 stainless steel being a hardened material were modified by low temperature tempering process. By the process of tempering, brittleness on the stainless steel material will be reduced and ductility will be promoted. The microstructure, surface hardness and erosion-corrosion resistance were systematically evaluated. Vacuum tempering is done at low temperature of 430℃ can form a hardened layer, and with the treated time prolong, the thickness of the layer increased. The stainless specimens were vacuum tempered for 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 120 minutes. Wear tests were conducted with the help of pin on disc apparatus. The output results were determined with various metallographic tests like scanning electron microscope and optical microscope results

    It has been shown that the Dimopoulos-Wilczek (or missing-VEV) mechanism for doublet-triplet splitting can be implemented in SU(5)×SU(5)SU(5) \times SU(5) models, which requires no adjoint Higgs fields. This is an advantage from the point of view of string theory construction. Here the stability of the gauge hierarchy is examined in detail, and it is shown that it can be guaranteed much more simply than in SO(10)SO(10). In fact a Z2Z_2 symmetry ensures the stability of the DW form of the expectation values to all orders in GUT-scale VEVs. It is also shown that models based on SO(10)×SU(5)SO(10) \times SU(5) have the advantages of SU(5)×SU(5)SU(5) \times SU(5) while permitting complete quark-lepton unification as in SO(10)SO(10).Comment: 13 pages, LaTe

    Comparative study of adenosine deaminase activity, insulin resistance and lipoprotein(a) among smokers and healthy non-smokers

    Background: Adenosine deaminase also known as adenosine aminohydrolase involved in purine metabolism. Its primary function is development and maintenance of immune system. The main objective of the study was to estimate adenosine deaminase (ADA) enzyme and find its correlation with lipoprotein(a) and insulin resistance among smokers and healthy non-smokers.Methods: Fifty smokers and fifty healthy non-smokers were selected based on WHO definition. ADA, lipid profile and glucose was estimated on a fully automated analyser by IFCC approved methods and lipoprotein(a) was done by latex enhanced immune-turbidimetric assay method respectively.Results: After appropriate screening ADA activity and insulin was significantly elevated among smokers when compared with healthy non-smokers. A positive correlation was found between pack size of cigarette and ADA activity and also with Lp(a) respectively. In addition, there was no correlation between serum lipid profile and ADA activity.Conclusions: Adenosine deaminase activity was increased in patients in response to nicotine which is the key component of cigarette smoke. These findings indicate that nicotine and carbon monoxide can alter lipoprotein synthesis and also modify LDL to oxidized form which can lead to ischemic heart disease

    Natural Gauge Hierarchy in SO(10)

    It is shown that a natural gauge hierarchy and doublet-triplet splitting can be achieved in SO(10) using the Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism. Artificial cancellations (fine-tuning) and arbitrary forms of the superpotential are avoided, the superpotential being the most general compatible with a symmetry. It is shown by example that the Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism can be protected against the effects of higher-dimension operators possibly induced by Planck-scale physics. Natural implementation of the mechanism leads to an automatic Peccei-Quinn symmetry. The same local symmetries that would protect the gauge hierarchy against Planck-scale effects tend to protect the axion also. It is shown how realistic quark and lepton masses might arise in this framework. It is also argued that ``weak suppression'' of proton decay can be implemented more economically than can ``strong suppression'', offering some grounds to hope (in the context of SO(10)) that proton decay could be seen at Superkamiokande.Comment: 26 pages in plain LaTeX, 5 figures available on request, BA-94-0

    We investigate some proposals to solve the electric charge quantization puzzle, which simultaneously explain the recent measured deviation on the muon anomalous magnetic moment. For this we assess extensions of the Electro-Weak Standard Model spanning modifications on the scalar sector only.
