    Coal combustion models: a review

    Abstract : Computational Fluid Dynamics has been used for optimisation of industrial applications with some level of success. The modest accuracy provided by some of the combustion models in use has left some room for research and improvement. Coal is presented as a fuel with complex chemical properties due to its fossil fuel nature. The devolatilization process of coal is investigated with special attention to the best models that can handle heavy and light volatiles found in coal. The heterogenous char combustion is also presented paying attention to the nature of the char particle during the combustion process. The other processes such as drying, homogenous volatile combustion, radiation models, particle tracking models and turbulent models are investigated in a general manner as they rarely vary with the type of fuel being investigated. A summary of the industrial applications that have successfully utilised the CFD models for optimisation of coal combustion are presented thus helping in drawing the final conclusion

    Performance evaluation of a plate encapsulated salt hydrate PCM mixed with a gel

    Abstract : An alternative method of cooling is required to meet cooling demands and simultaneously decrease conventional energy consumption. The current research aimed to investigate the feasibility of using a phase change material (PCM) in the form of a salt hydrate mixed with a CSIR-developed gel for PCM based cold storage that used nighttime cold to cool ambient air during the day. The experiments were conducted over a time period of three hours between 12:00 pm and 15:00 pm in the afternoon. The total temperature drops were found to be 3.8, 2.9 and 2.6 degrees for air flow rates of 0.03, 0.05 and 0.06kg/s respectively. The total energy transferred for each of the mass flow rates averaged 140.9, 144.4 and 158.9J for air flow rates of 0.03, 0.05 and 0.06kg/s respectively

    Investigation of household refrigerator system with varied capillary tube length

    Abstract : In this paper, the performance of R600a was investigated in a household refrigerator originally designed to work with R134a using varied capillary tube length (1.0, 1.15, 1.30 and 1.45 m). The refrigerator was instrumented with four thermocouples at the inlet and outlet of the major components. Also, two pressure gauges were connected to the compressor to measure the suction and discharge of the compressor. The experimental results were used to evaluate the performance of the system. The results showed that at optimal capillary tube length the COP and cooling capacity of R600a in the system increased with 45% and 4.2% respectively and the power consumption reduced with 25% using 1.30 m varied capillary tube length compared to R134a. Conclusively, R600a can serve as a retrofit in the household refrigerator systems originally designed to work with R134a refrigerant

    Thermodynamic Performance Analysis and Optimization of Domestic Refrigerator with Varying Refrigerant Charge and Capillary Tube Lengths

    In this paper, thermodynamic performance analysis and optimization of a domestic refrigerator were experimentally carried out by simultaneously varying the refrigerant charge (wr) and the capillary tube length (L). Continuous running and cycling tests were performed on a domestic refrigerator under tropical conditions using three refrigerants (R12, LPG and R600A) with different capillary tube lengths and various charges. The results show that the design temperature and pull-down time set by ISO for small refrigerator are achieved earlier using refrigerant charge 60g of LPG with 1.5m capillary tube length. The highest COP (4.8) was obtained using 60g charge of LPG with L = 1.5m. The average COP obtained using LPG was 1.14% and 15.09 % higher than that of R600a and R12 respectively. Based on the results of this study, R600a offered lowest power consumption. The compressor consumed 20 % less power compared to LPG and 32% less power than R12 in the system. In conclusion, the system performed best with LPG in terms of COP and cooling capacity. In term of power consumption R600a performed best.This shows that both LPG and R600A can be used as replacement for R12 in domestic refrigerator

    A comparative experimental study on the performance of a domestic refrigerator using R600A and LPG with a varying refrigerant charge (wr) and capillary tube length (L) was carried out. The enthalpy of the refrigerants R600A and LPG for each data set for the experimental conditions were obtained by using REFPROP soft ware (version 9.0). The results show that the design temperature and pull-down time set by ISO for a small refrigerator are achieved earlier using refrigerant charge 60 g of LPG with a 1.5 m capillary tube length.     Dataset and ANN model prediction of performance of graphene nanolubricant with R600a in domestic refrigerator system

    Abstract: This work evaluated the steady state performance of R600a in the base lubricant and graphene nanolubricant. The mea- suring instruments required and their uncertainties were provided, step by step method and procedures for prepara- tion of graphene nanolubricant concentration and substitut- ing it with the base lubricant in domestic refrigerator system are described. The system temperatures data was captured at the inlet and outlet of the system components. Also, the pressures data was recorded at the compressor inlet and out- let. The data was recorded for 3 h at 30 min interval at an ambient temperature of 27 °C. The experimental dataset, Ar- tificial Neural Network (ANN) training and testing dataset are provided. The artificial intelligence approach of ANN model to predict the performance of graphene nanolubricant in do- mestic refrigerator is explained. Also, the ANN model pre- diction statistical performance metrics such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and coefficient of determination (R 2 ) are also provided. The data is useful to researchers in the field of refrigeration and energy efficiency materials, for replacing nanolubricant with the base lubricant

    COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EXERGETIC PERFORMANCE OF A HOUSEHOLD REFRIGERATOR USING R134a AND R600a

    The coefficient of performance (COP) and exergetic performance of a household refrigerator was investigated using R134a in comparison with the performance of R600a. The coefficient of performance, exergy efficiency, and the efficiency defect in the four major components were investigated. The results showed that the COP of R600a was 10.3% higher than that of R134a, a higher exergy efficiency of 42.8% was obtained using R600a at evaporator temperature of–10 C. Generally, R600a performed better than R134a in terms of COP, exergy efficiency, and the efficiency defect in a household refrigeration system

    Design and Implementation of a Cost Effective Real Time Vehicle Tracking System Using Telit GM862

    This paper gives the description of the design and implementation of a Real Time Cost Effective Vehicle Tracking System making use of Telit GM862 Module. The Module was installed in a vehicle as the Vehicle Unit while a mobile hand set was used as the Remote Tracking Device. The Module was configured using hyper-terminal on a computer system where the necessary properties and parameters were set. SMSATRUN service was also activated on the module. The SMS information to query the location was sent from the Remote Tracking Device using GSM/GPRS modem on any chosen GSM network to the Vehicle Unit (Module). The Vehicle Unit responds with an SMS message of the location information to the Tracking Device with an authorized mobile number on the GSM Network. The coordinates of the location received are then displayed on Google Map

    Using antenatal care as a platform for malaria surveillance data collection: study protocol

    BACKGROUND: While many malaria-endemic countries have health management information systems that can measure and report malaria trends in a timely manner, these routine systems have limitations. Periodic community cross-sectional household surveys are used to estimate malaria prevalence and intervention coverage but lack geographic granularity and are resource intensive. Incorporating malaria testing for all women at their first antenatal care (ANC) visit (i.e., ANC1) could provide a more timely and granular source of data for monitoring trends in malaria burden and intervention coverage. This article describes a protocol designed to assess if ANC-based surveillance could be a pragmatic tool to monitor malaria. METHODS: This is an observational, cross-sectional study conducted in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zambia. Pregnant women attending ANC1 in selected health facilities will be tested for malaria infection by rapid diagnostic test and administered a brief questionnaire to capture key indicators of malaria control intervention coverage and care-seeking behaviour. In each location, contemporaneous cross-sectional household surveys will be leveraged to assess correlations between estimates obtained using each method, and the use of ANC data as a tool to track trends in malaria burden and intervention coverage will be validated. RESULTS: This study will assess malaria prevalence at ANC1 aggregated at health facility and district levels, and by gravidity relative to current pregnancy (i.e., gravida 1, gravida 2, and gravida 3 +). ANC1 malaria prevalence will be presented as monthly trends. Additionally, correlation between ANC1 and household survey-derived estimates of malaria prevalence, bed net ownership and use, and care-seeking will be assessed. CONCLUSION: ANC1-based surveillance has the potential to provide a cost-effective, localized measure of malaria prevalence that is representative of the general population and useful for tracking monthly changes in parasite prevalence, as well as providing population-representative estimates of intervention coverage and care-seeking behavior. This study will evaluate the representativeness of these measures and collect information on operational feasibility, usefulness for programmatic decision-making, and potential for scale-up of malaria ANC1 surveillance

    Population structure and evolutionary history of the greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) from the Guinean Forests of West Africa

    Grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus) is a large-body old world rodent found in sub-Saharan Africa. The body size and the unique taste of the meat of this major crop pest have made it a target of intense hunting and a potential consideration as a micro-livestock. However, there is insufficient knowledge on the genetic diversity of its populations across African Guinean forests. Herein, we investigated the genetic diversity, population structures and evolutionary history of seven Nigerian wild grasscutter populations together with individuals from Cameroon, Republic of Benin, and Ghana, using five mitochondrial fragments, including D-loop and cytochrome b (CYTB). D-loop haplotype diversity ranged from 0.571 (± 0.149) in Republic of Benin to 0.921 (± 0.013) in Ghana. Within Nigeria, the haplotype diversity ranged from 0.659 (± 0.059) in Cross River to 0.837 (± 0.075) in Ondo subpopulation. The fixation index (FST), haplotype frequency distribution and analysis of molecular variance revealed varying levels of population structures across populations. No significant signature of population contraction was detected in the grasscutter populations. Evolutionary analyses of CYTB suggests that South African population might have diverged from other populations about 6.1 (2.6–10.18, 95% CI) MYA. Taken together, this study reveals the population status and evolutionary history of grasscutter populations in the region
