    The effect of nanomaterials on embryonic stem cell neural differentiation: a systematic review

    Abstract Background Humans’ nervous system has a limited ability to repair nerve cells, which poses substantial challenges in treating injuries and diseases. Stem cells are identified by the potential to renew their selves and develop into several cell types, making them ideal candidates for cell replacement in injured neurons. Neuronal differentiation of embryonic stem cells in modern medicine is significant. Nanomaterials have distinct advantages in directing stem cell function and tissue regeneration in this field. We attempted in this systematic review to collect data, analyze them, and report results on the effect of nanomaterials on neuronal differentiation of embryonic stem cells. Methods International databases such as PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and EMBASE were searched for available articles on the effect of nanomaterials on neuronal differentiation of embryonic stem cells (up to OCTOBER 2023). After that, screening (by title, abstract, and full text), selection, and data extraction were performed. Also, quality assessment was conducted based on the STROBE checklist. Results In total, 1507 articles were identified and assessed, and then only 29 articles were found eligible to be included. Nine studies used 0D nanomaterials, ten used 1D nanomaterials, two reported 2D nanomaterials, and eight demonstrated the application of 3D nanomaterials. The main biomaterial in studies was polymer-based composites. Three studies reported the negative effect of nanomaterials on neural differentiation. Conclusion Neural differentiation is crucial in neurological regenerative medicine. Nanomaterials with different characteristics, particularly those cellular regulating activities and stem cell fate, have much potential in neural tissue engineering. These findings indicate a new understanding of potential applications of physicochemical cues in nerve tissue engineering. Graphical Abstrac

    Assessing physical inactivity as a risk factor for chronic kidney diseases in Iranian population

    Objectives Physical inactivity is a major adjustable lifestyle risk factor in renal patients; nevertheless, research on the association of physical activity (PA) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unclear.Design Cross-sectional.Setting We evaluated the secondary care related to the nephrology specialists.Participants We evaluated PA in 3374 Iranian patients with CKD aged ≥18 years. Exclusion criteria were current or prior kidney transplantation, dementia, institutionalisation, expected to start renal replacement therapy or leave the area within study duration, participation in a clinical trial or inability to undergo the informed consent process.Primary and secondary outcome The renal function parameters were measured and compared with PA, assessed by the Baecke questionnaire. Estimated glomerular filtration rate, haematuria and/or albuminuria were used to estimate decreased kidney function and the incidence of CKD. To estimate the relationship between PA and CKD, we used the multinomial adjusted regression models.Results In the first model, findings indicate that the patients with the lowest PA score had significantly higher odds of CKD (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.16 to 1.78; p=0.01), adjustment for age and sex attenuated this relationship (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.56 to 1.78, p=0.04). Furthermore, adjusting for low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose, body mass index, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio, coexisting diseases and smoking made this relationship insignificant (OR 1.23, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.55; p=0.076). After adjusting for potential confounders, we found that patients with lower PA have higher odds of CKD stage 2 (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.13 to 2.32; p=0.008), no association with other CKD stages.Conclusion These data suggest that physical inactivity contributes to the risk of early CKD, so encouraging patients with CKD to maintain higher PA levels could be used as a simple and useful tool to decrease the risk of disease progression and its related burden

    Ethnic differences in the lifestyle behaviors and premature coronary artery disease: a multi-center study

    Background: Diverse ethnic groups that exist in Iran may differ regarding the risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and family history of non-communicable disease. Premature Coronary Artery Disease (PCAD) is more endemic in Iran than before. This study sought to assess the association between ethnicity and lifestyle behaviors in eight major Iranian ethnic groups with PCAD. Methods: In this study, 2863 patients aged ≤ 70 for women and ≤ 60 for men who underwent coronary angiography were recruited in a multi-center framework. All the patients’ demographic, laboratory, clinical, and risk factor data were retrieved. Eight large ethnicities in Iran, including the Farses, the Kurds, the Turks, the Gilaks, the Arabs, the Lors, the Qashqai, and the Bakhtiari were evaluated for PCAD. Different lifestyle components and having PCAD were compared among the ethnical groups using multivariable modeling. Results: The mean age of the 2863 patients participated was 55.66 ± 7.70 years. The Fars ethnicity with 1654 people, was the most subject in this study. Family history of more than three chronic diseases (1279 (44.7%) was the most common risk factor. The Turk ethnic group had the highest prevalence of ≥ 3 simultaneous lifestyle-related risk factors (24.3%), and the Bakhtiari ethnic group had the highest prevalence of no lifestyle-related risk factors (20.9%). Adjusted models showed that having all three abnormal lifestyle components increased the risk of PCAD (OR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.04–1.06). The Arabs had the most chance of getting PCAD among other ethnicities (OR = 2.26, 95%CI: 1.40–3.65). While, the Kurds with a healthy lifestyle showed the lowest chance of getting PCAD (OR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.05–3.67)). Conclusions: This study found there was heterogeneity in having PACD and a diverse distribution in its well-known traditional lifestyle-related risk factors among major Iranian ethnic groups
