Sensitivity and stability: A signal propagation sweet spot in a sheet of recurrent centre crossing neurons

    No full text
In this paper we demonstrate that signal propagation across a laminar sheet of recurrent neurons is maximised when two conditions are met. First, neurons must be in the so-called centre crossing configuration. Second, the network’s topology and weights must be such that the network comprises strongly coupled nodes, yet lies within the weakly coupled regime. We develop tools from linear stability analysis with which to describe this regime, and use them to examine the apparent tension between the sensitivity and instability of centre crossing networks

The effects of high-temperature brazing and thermal cycling on the mechanical properties of Hastelloy X

Data are presented on the effects of brazing alloy, brazing operation, thermal cycling, and combinations of these on the yield strength, elongation, tensile strength, and fatigue life of thin gage Hastelloy X. These data show that brazing at 1461 K (2170 F) with a Ni-Pd-Au alloy and subsequent exposure to 200 service thermal cycles between 533 and 1144 K (500 and 1600 F) result in reduction of as much as 39 percent in yield strength, 33 percent in elongation, 14 percent in tensile strength, and 26 percent in fatigue limit of Hastelloy X, as compared to as-received materials. These property losses are primarily caused by the brazing operation rather than the subsequent service thermal cycles

Modelling fat and protein concentration curves for Irish dairy cows

peer-reviewedThe objective of this study was to acquire a well-fitting, single-equation model that would represent the fat and protein concentration curves of milk from Irish dairy cows. The dataset consisted of 16,086 records from both spring and autumn calving cows from both experimental and commercial herds. Many models cited in the literature to represent milk yield were examined for their suitability to model constituent curves. Models were tested for goodness-of-fit, adherence to the assumptions of regression analysis, and their ability to predict total fat and protein concentration for an entire lactation. Wilmink’s model best satisfied these criteria. It had the best Mean Square Prediction Error (goodness-of-fit) value, it satisfied the assumptions of regression analysis (multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation and normality of distribution), and it predicted the actual concentration of the constituents to within 0.01 percentage point

Bearing alloys with hexagonal crystal structures provide improved friction and wear characteristics

    Get PDF
Bearings of titanium, cobalt, and other hexagonal crystal alloys are used in vacuum and high temperature environments. These temperature-stabilized alloys have reduced friction and wear characteristics and therefore have potential use in aircraft seals, hydraulic equipment, and artificial human joints

Experimental land observing data system feasibility study

An end-to-end data system to support a Shuttle-based Multispectral Linear Array (MLA) mission in the mid-1980's was defined. The experimental Land Observing System (ELOS) is discussed. A ground system that exploits extensive assets from the LANDSAT-D Program to effectively meet the objectives of the ELOS Mission was defined. The goal of 10 meter pixel precision, the variety of data acquisition capabilities, and the use of Shuttle are key to the mission requirements, Ground mission management functions are met through the use of GSFC's Multi-Satellite Operations Control Center (MSOCC). The MLA Image Generation Facility (MIGF) combines major hardware elements from the Applications Development Data System (ADDS) facility and LANDSAT Assessment System (LAS) with a special purpose MLA interface unit. LANDSAT-D image processing techniques, adapted to MLA characteristics, form the basis for the use of existing software and the definition of new software required
