    Thermal properties of a string bit model at large N

    We study the finite temperature properties of a recently introduced string bit model designed to capture some features of the emergent string in the tensionless limit. The model consists of a pair of bosonic and fermionic bit operators transforming in the adjoint representation of the color group SU(N). Color confinement is not achieved as a dynamical effect, but instead is enforced by an explicit singlet projection. At large N and finite temperature, the model has a non trivial thermodynamics. In particular, there is a Hagedorn type transition at a finite temperature T=THT=T_H where the string degrees of freedom are liberated and the free energy gets a large contribution ∌N2\sim N^{2} that plays the role of an order parameter. For T>THT>T_H, the low temperature phase becomes unstable. In the new phase, the thermodynamically favoured configurations are characterized by a non-trivial gapped density of the SU(N) angles associated with the singlet projection. We present an accurate algorithm for the determination of the density profile at N=∞N=\infty. In particular, we determine the gap endpoint at generic temperature and analytical expansions valid near the Hagedorn transition as well as at high temperature. The leading order corrections are characterized by non-trivial exponents that are determined analytically and compared with explicit numerical calculations.Comment: 15 pages, 8 pdf figure

    Reading during the composition of multi-sentence texts: an eye-movement study

    Writers composing multi-sentence texts have immediate access to a visual representation of what they have written. Little is known about the detail of writers’ eye movements within this text during production. We describe two experiments in which competent adult writers’ eye-movements were tracked while performing short expository writing tasks. These are contrasted with conditions in which participants read and evaluated researcher-provided texts. Writers spent a mean of around 13% of their time looking back into their text. Initiation of these look-back sequences was strongly predicted by linguistically important boundaries in their ongoing production (e.g., writers were much more likely to look back immediately prior to starting a new sentence). 36% of look-back sequences were associated with sustained reading and the remainder with less patterned forward and backward saccades between words ("hopping"). Fixation and gaze durations and the presence of word-length effects suggested lexical processing of fixated words in both reading and hopping sequences. Word frequency effects were not present when writers read their own text. Findings demonstrate the technical possibility and potential value of examining writers’ fixations within their just-written text. We suggest that these fixations do not serve solely, or even primarily, in monitoring for error, but play an important role in planning ongoing production

    Trends in the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and cardia in the Netherlands 1989–2003

    Over the 15-year period 1989–2003, the incidence of oesophagus–cardia adenocarcinoma in the Netherlands rose annually by 2.6% for males and 1.2% for females. This was the net outcome of annual increases in the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus (ACO) of 7.2% for males and 3.5% for females and annual declines in the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia (AGC) of more than 1% for both genders. Nonlinear cohort patterns were found in females with ACO and for both genders in AGC; a nonlinear period pattern was observed only in males with AGC. These differing epidemiological patterns for ACO and AGC do not support a common aetiology. Proposed underlying factors for the rise in ACO incidence appear to have little effect on AGC incidence. This and the secular decline in smoking among males may have led to the decline in AGC incidence

    Vascular endothelium lines the entire cardiovascular system where performs a series of vital functions including the control of microvascular permeability, coagulation inflammation, vascular tone as well as the formation of new vessels via vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in normal and disease states. Normal endothelium consists of heterogeneous populations of cells differentiated according to the vascular bed and segment of the vascular tree where they occur. One of the cardinal features is the expression of specific subcellular structures such as plasmalemmal vesicles or caveolae, transendothelial channels, vesiculo-vacuolar organelles, endothelial pockets and fenestrae, whose presence define several endothelial morphological types. A less explored observation is the differential expression of such structures in diverse settings of angiogenesis. This review will focus on the latest developments on the components, structure and function of these specific endothelial structures in normal endothelium as well as in diverse settings of angiogenesis

    Prevalence of hallux valgus in the general population: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) is a foot deformity commonly seen in medical practice, often accompanied by significant functional disability and foot pain. Despite frequent mention in a diverse body of literature, a precise estimate of the prevalence of HV is difficult to ascertain. The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate prevalence of HV in the overall population and evaluate the influence of age and gender. METHODS: Electronic databases (Medline, Embase, and CINAHL) and reference lists of included papers were searched to June 2009 for papers on HV prevalence without language restriction. MeSH terms and keywords were used relating to HV or bunions, prevalence and various synonyms. Included studies were surveys reporting original data for prevalence of HV or bunions in healthy populations of any age group. Surveys reporting prevalence data grouped with other foot deformities and in specific disease groups (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes) were excluded. Two independent investigators quality rated all included papers on the Epidemiological Appraisal Instrument. Data on raw prevalence, population studied and methodology were extracted. Prevalence proportions and the standard error were calculated, and meta-analysis was performed using a random effects model. RESULTS: A total of 78 papers reporting results of 76 surveys (total 496,957 participants) were included and grouped by study population for meta-analysis. Pooled prevalence estimates for HV were 23% in adults aged 18-65 years (CI: 16.3 to 29.6) and 35.7% in elderly people aged over 65 years (CI: 29.5 to 42.0). Prevalence increased with age and was higher in females [30% (CI: 22 to 38)] compared to males [13% (CI: 9 to 17)]. Potential sources of bias were sampling method, study quality and method of HV diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Notwithstanding the wide variation in estimates, it is evident that HV is prevalent; more so in females and with increasing age. Methodological quality issues need to be addressed in interpreting reports in the literature and in future research
