    Strong obstruction of the Berends-Burgers-van Dam spin-3 vertex

    In the eighties, Berends, Burgers and van Dam (BBvD) found a nonabelian cubic vertex for self-interacting massless fields of spin three in flat spacetime. However, they also found that this deformation is inconsistent at higher order for any multiplet of spin-three fields. For arbitrary symmetric gauge fields, we severely constrain the possible nonabelian deformations of the gauge algebra and, using these results, prove that the BBvD obstruction cannot be cured by any means, even by introducing fields of spin higher (or lower) than three.Comment: 19 pages, no figur

    In this paper we (re)consider the problem of electromagnetic interactions for massless spin 2 particles and show that in (A)dS(A)dS spaces with non-zero cosmological constant it is indeed possible (at least in linear approximation) to switch on minimal electromagnetic interactions supplemented by third derivative non-minimal ones which are necessary to restore gauge invariance.Comment: 5 pages, no figure

    Gravitational cubic interactions for a massive mixed symmetry gauge field

    In a recent paper arXiv:1107.1872 cubic gravitational interactions for a massless mixed symmetry field in AdS space have been constructed. In the current paper we extend these results to the case of massive field. We work in a Fradkin-Vasiliev approach and use frame-like gauge invariant description for massive field which works in (A)dS spaces with arbitrary values of cosmological constant including flat Minkowski space. In this, massless limit in AdS space coincides with the results of arXiv:1107.1872 while we show that it is impossible to switch on gravitational interaction for massless field in dS space.Comment: 13 page

    A Weyl-covariant tensor calculus

    On a (pseudo-) Riemannian manifold of dimension n > 2, the space of tensors which transform covariantly under Weyl rescalings of the metric is built. This construction is related to a Weyl-covariant operator D whose commutator [D,D] gives the conformally invariant Weyl tensor plus the Cotton tensor.     It is a general belief that the only possible way to consistently deform the Pauli-Fierz action, changing also the gauge algebra, is general relativity. Here we show that a different type of deformation exists in three dimensions if one allows for PT non-invariant terms. The new gauge algebra is different from that of diffeomorphisms.     The Dust Properties of Eight Debris Disk Candidates as Determined by Submillimeter Photometry

    The nature of far-infrared dust emission toward main sequence stars, whether interstellar or circumstellar, can be deduced from submillimeter photometry. We present JCMT/SCUBA flux measurements at 850 microns toward 8 stars with large photospheric excesses at 60-100 microns. 5 sources were detected at 3-sigma or greater significance and one was marginally detected at 2.5-sigma. The inferred dust masses and temperatures range from 0.033 to 0.24 Earth masses and 43-65 K respectively. The frequency behavior of the opacity, tau_nu ~ nu^beta, is relatively shallow, beta < 1. These dust properties are characteristic of circumstellar material, most likely the debris from planetesimal collisions. The 2 non-detections have lower temperatures, 35-38 K and steeper opacity indices, beta > 1.5, that are more typical of interstellar cirrus. The confirmed disks all have inferred diameters > 2'', most lie near the upper envelope of the debris disk mass distribution, and 4 are bright enough to be feasible for high resolution imaging.Comment: accepted by Ap

    Optimizing ISOCAM data processing using spatial redundancy

    We present new data processing techniques that allow to correct the main instrumental effects that degrade the images obtained by ISOCAM, the camera on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Our techniques take advantage of the fact that a position on the sky has been observed by several pixels at different times. We use this information (1) to correct the long term variation of the detector response, (2) to correct memory effects after glitches and point sources, and (3) to refine the deglitching process. Our new method allows the detection of faint extended emission with contrast smaller than 1% of the zodiacal background. The data reduction corrects instrumental effects to the point where the noise in the final map is dominated by the readout and the photon noises. All raster ISOCAM observations can benefit from the data processing described here. These techniques could also be applied to other raster type observations (e.g. ISOPHOT or IRAC on SIRTF).Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, to be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics Supplement Serie

    Consistent couplings between a massless tensor field with the mixed symmetry of the Riemann tensor and a massless vector field are analyzed in the framework of Lagrangian BRST cohomology. Under the assumptions on smoothness, locality, Lorentz covariance, and Poincare invariance of the deformations, combined with the requirement that the interacting Lagrangian is at most second-order derivative, it is proved that there are no consistent cross-interactions between a single massless tensor field with the mixed symmetry of the Riemann tensor and one massless vector field.Comment: LaTeX, 24 page
