Alterations in brain connectivity due to plasticity and synaptic delay

Brain plasticity refers to brain's ability to change neuronal connections, as a result of environmental stimuli, new experiences, or damage. In this work, we study the effects of the synaptic delay on both the coupling strengths and synchronisation in a neuronal network with synaptic plasticity. We build a network of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons, where the plasticity is given by the Hebbian rules. We verify that without time delay the excitatory synapses became stronger from the high frequency to low frequency neurons and the inhibitory synapses increases in the opposite way, when the delay is increased the network presents a non-trivial topology. Regarding the synchronisation, only for small values of the synaptic delay this phenomenon is observed

Two Superconducting Phases in CeRh_1-xIr_xIn_5

Pressure studies of CeRh_1-xIr_xIn_5 indicate two superconducting phases as a function of x, one with T_c >= 2 K for x < 0.9 and the other with T_c < 1.2 K for x > 0.9. The higher T_c phase, phase-1, emerges in proximity to an antiferromagnetic quantum-critical point; whereas, Cooper pairing in the lower T_c phase-2 is inferred to arise from fluctuations of a yet to be found magnetic state. The T-x-P phase diagram of CeRh_1-xIr_xIn_5, though qualitatively similar, is distinctly different from that of CeCu_2(Si_1-xGe_x)_2.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Experimental Observation of Quantum Correlations in Modular Variables

We experimentally detect entanglement in modular position and momentum variables of photon pairs which have passed through $D$-slit apertures. We first employ an entanglement criteria recently proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 210501 (2011)], using variances of the modular variables. We then propose an entanglement witness for modular variables based on the Shannon entropy, and test it experimentally. Finally, we derive criteria for Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Steering correlations using variances and entropy functions. Hypoglycemia in Pregnancy

Hypoglycemia is considered when glycemia values fall below 60 mg/dl and is associated with increased maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality. In a diabetic pregnancy this complication can result from a decrease in caloric ingestion relative to administered insulin. Hypoglycemia can present as a simple adrenergic response or as a neuroglicopenic response that can lead to maternal death and stillbirth. This is the reason why it can rapidly evolve into an obstetric emergency. It is important to possess a pre-defined protocol to guide healthcare professionals regarding the rapid management of this situation. The authors review the scientific literature on the subject of hypoglycemia in pregnancy and propose a protocol to be applied in this situation

Análise comparativa dos efeitos alelopáticos das substâncias químicas titonina e titonina acetilada.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo estabelecer as variações na atividade alelopática da substância química titonina, em função da acetilação de sua molécula. Bioensaios de germinação (25 oC de temperatura constante e fotoperíodo de 12 horas) e de desenvolvimento da radícula e do hipocótilo (25 oC de temperatura constante e fotoperíodo de 24 horas) foram desenvolvidos. Como planta receptora, utilizou-se a planta daninha Mimosa pudica (malícia). Análise de espectros RMN 1H e 13C e técnicas de RMN bidimensionais foram realizadas na molécula acetilada. O processo de acetilação produziu a molécula 3?-acetil-7,4?-dimetoxiflavona, que diferiu da molécula original, identificada como 3?-hidroxi-7,4?-dimetoxiflavona. A estrutura da titonina-Ac foi confirmada pelos espectros de RMN 1H, 13C, DEPT, COSY e HETCOR. A titonina foi acetilada com anidrido acético em piridina. A análise comparativa da atividade alelopática das duas substâncias revelou que titonina-Ac apresentou maior potencial para inibir tanto a germinação das sementes como o desenvolvimento da radícula e do hipocótilo da planta daninha malícia. A intensidade dos efeitos alelopáticos das duas substâncias esteve positivamente associada à concentração. O conjunto das informações obtidas permite sugerir a possibilidade de se aumentar a atividade alelopática de uma substância química sem comprometer suas peculiaridades biológicas desejáveis à natureza e aos interesses da sociedad

A mathematical structure for the generalization of the conventional algebra

An abstract mathematical framework is presented in this paper as a unification of several deformed or generalized algebra proposed recently in the context of generalized statistical theories intended to treat certain complex thermodynamic or statistical systems. It is shown that, from mathematical point of view, any bijective function can be used in principle to formulate an algebra in which the conventional algebraic rules are generalized
