The Student and Law School Governance
At a recent meeting of a university Board of Trustees, discussion centered on three problems-perhaps one should say three aspects of one problem-the solution to which will affect the university and its role in our quickly-changing society. I refer, of course, to the violence of a few student extremists who are disrupting the normal activities of the university, to the new emphasis on a Black student separatist movement and to student demands for responsibility in the governance of the university. Of the three, the latter is clearly the most important; its solution should aid in solving the difficulties created by the other two
Compétences en santé déficientes: obstacle à une prise en charge optimale. [Low health literacy: barrier to optimal care]
Les carences en compétences en santé touchent principalement certaines populations à risques en limitant l'accès aux soins, l'interaction avec les soignants et l'autoprise en charge. L'utilisation systématique d'instruments de dépistage n'est pas recommandée et les interventions préconisées en pratique consistent plutôt à diminuer les obstacles entravant la communication patient-soignant. Il s'agit d'intégrer non seulement les compétences de la population en matière de santé mais aussi les compétences communicationnelles d'un système de santé qui se complexifie.
Health literacy is defined as "the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions." Low health literacy mainly affects certain populations at risk limiting access to care, interaction with caregivers and self-management. If there are screening tests, their routine use is not advisable and recommended interventions in practice consist rather to reduce barriers to patient-caregiver communication. It is thus important to include not only population's health literacy but also communication skills of a health system wich tend to become more complex
Raman spectroscopy on etched graphene nanoribbons
We investigate etched single-layer graphene nanoribbons with different widths
ranging from 30 to 130 nm by confocal Raman spectroscopy. We show that the
D-line intensity only depends on the edge-region of the nanoribbon and that
consequently the fabrication process does not introduce bulk defects. In
contrast, the G- and the 2D-lines scale linearly with the irradiated area and
therefore with the width of the ribbons. We further give indications that the
D- to G-line ratio can be used to gain information about the crystallographic
orientation of the underlying graphene. Finally, we perform polarization angle
dependent measurements to analyze the nanoribbon edge-regions

Ceria-Based Dual-Phase Membranes for High-Temperature Carbon Dioxide Separation: Effect of Iron Doping and Pore Generation with MgO Template
Dual-phase membranes for high-temperature carbon dioxide separation have emerged as promising technology to mitigate anthropogenic greenhouse gases emissions, especially as a pre- and post-combustion separation technique in coal burning power plants. To implement these membranes industrially, the carbon dioxide permeability must be improved. In this study, Ce0.8Sm0.2O2−δ (SDC) and Ce0.8Sm0.19Fe0.01O2−δ (FSDC) ceramic powders were used to form the skeleton in dual-phase membranes. The use of MgO as an environmentally friendly pore generator allows control over the membrane porosity and microstructure in order to compare the effect of the membrane’s ceramic phase. The ceramic powders and the resulting membranes were characterized using ICP-OES, HSM, gravimetric analysis, SEM/EDX, and XRD, and the carbon dioxide flux density was quantified using a high-temperature membrane permeation setup. The carbon dioxide permeability slightly increases with the addition of iron in the FSDC membranes compared to the SDC membranes mainly due to the reported scavenging effect of iron with the siliceous impurities, with an additional potential contribution of an increased crystallite size due to viscous flow sintering. The increased permeability of the FSDC system and the proper microstructure control by MgO can be further extended to optimize carbon dioxide permeability in this membrane system.DFG, 414044773, Open Access Publizieren 2019 - 2020 / Technische Universität Berli
Infinite index extensions of local nets and defects
Subfactor theory provides a tool to analyze and construct extensions of
Quantum Field Theories, once the latter are formulated as local nets of von
Neumann algebras. We generalize some of the results of [LR95] to the case of
extensions with infinite Jones index. This case naturally arises in physics,
the canonical examples are given by global gauge theories with respect to a
compact (non-finite) group of internal symmetries. Building on the works of
Izumi, Longo, Popa [ILP98] and Fidaleo, Isola [FI99], we consider generalized
Q-systems (of intertwiners) for a semidiscrete inclusion of properly infinite
von Neumann algebras, which generalize ordinary Q-systems introduced by Longo
[Lon94] to the infinite index case. We characterize inclusions which admit
generalized Q-systems of intertwiners and define a braided product among the
latter, hence we construct examples of QFTs with defects (phase boundaries) of
infinite index, extending the family of boundaries in the grasp of [BKLR16].Comment: 50 page
