    Prediction of drained weight in canned prawn under commercial conditions

    A general formula for the prediction of drained weight of canned prawn processed under laboratory condition has been worked out earlier (Chaudhuri et al., 1978). Attempts were made in this communication to modify the general formula to predict the drained weight under commercial conditions of processing particularly blanching, as the moisture content of meat depends on the quantum of heat received during blanching (Govindan, 1975)

    Factored coset models: A unifying approach to different bosonization schemes

    We discuss various bosonization schemes from a path integral perspective. Our analysis shows that the existence of different bosonization schemes, such as abelian bosonization of non-abelian models and non-abelian bosonization of fermions with colour and flavour indices, can be understood as different ways of factoring out a dynamically trivial coset which contains the fermions. From this perspective follows the importance of the coset model in ensuring the correct superselection rules on the bosonic level.Comment: 20 pages, Revte

    The electromagnetic vertex of neutrinos in an electron background and a magnetic field

    We study the electromagnetic vertex function of a neutrino that propagates in an electron background in the presence of a static magnetic field. The structure of the vertex function under the stated conditions is determined and it is written down in terms of a minimal and complete set of tensors. The one-loop expressions for all the form factors is given, up to terms that are linear in the magnetic field, and the approximate integral formulas that hold in the long wavelength limit are obtained. We discuss the physical interpretation of some of the form factors and their relation with the concept of the neutrino induced charge. The neutrino acquires a longitudinal and a transverse charge, due to the fact that the form factors depend on the transverse and longitudinal components of the photon momentum independently. We compute those form factors explicitly in various limiting cases and find that the longitudinal and transverse charge are the same for the case of a non-relativistic electron gas, but not otherwise.Comment: 18 pages.     Nucleon axial and pseudoscalar form factors from the covariant Faddeev equation

    We compute the axial and pseudoscalar form factors of the nucleon in the Dyson-Schwinger approach. To this end, we solve a covariant three-body Faddeev equation for the nucleon wave function and determine the matrix elements of the axialvector and pseudoscalar isotriplet currents. Our only input is a well-established and phenomenologically successful ansatz for the nonperturbative quark-gluon interaction. As a consequence of the axial Ward-Takahashi identity that is respected at the quark level, the Goldberger-Treiman relation is reproduced for all current-quark masses. We discuss the timelike pole structure of the quark-antiquark vertices that enters the nucleon matrix elements and determines the momentum dependence of the form factors. Our result for the axial charge underestimates the experimental value by 20-25% which might be a signal of missing pion-cloud contributions. The axial and pseudoscalar form factors agree with phenomenological and lattice data in the momentum range above Q^2 ~ 1...2 GeV^2.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

    Confinement-Deconfinement Transition in 3-Dimensional QED

    We argue that, at finite temperature, parity invariant non-compact electrodynamics with massive electrons in 2+1 dimensions can exist in both confined and deconfined phases. We show that an order parameter for the confinement-deconfinement phase transition is the Polyakov loop operator whose average measures the free energy of a test charge that is not an integral multiple of the electron charge. The effective field theory for the Polyakov loop operator is a 2-dimensional Euclidean scalar field theory with a global discrete symmetry ZZ, the additive group of the integers. We argue that the realization of this symmetry governs confinement and that the confinement-deconfinement phase transition is of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. We compute the effective action to one-loop order and argue that when the electron mass mm is much greater than the temperature TT and dimensional coupling e2e^2, the effective field theory is the Sine-Gordon model.     "The fruits of independence": Satyajit Ray, Indian nationhood and the spectre of empire

    Challenging the longstanding consensus that Satyajit Ray's work is largely free of ideological concerns and notable only for its humanistic richness, this article shows with reference to representations of British colonialism and Indian nationhood that Ray's films and stories are marked deeply and consistently by a distinctively Bengali variety of liberalism. Drawn from an ongoing biographical project, it commences with an overview of the nationalist milieu in which Ray grew up and emphasizes the preoccupation with colonialism and nationalism that marked his earliest unfilmed scripts. It then shows with case studies of Kanchanjangha (1962), Charulata (1964), First Class Kamra (First-Class Compartment, 1981), Pratidwandi (The Adversary, 1970), Shatranj ke Khilari (The Chess Players, 1977), Agantuk (The Stranger, 1991) and Robertsoner Ruby (Robertson's Ruby, 1992) how Ray's mature work continued to combine a strongly anti-colonial viewpoint with a shifting perspective on Indian nationhood and an unequivocal commitment to cultural cosmopolitanism. Analysing how Ray articulated his ideological positions through the quintessentially liberal device of complexly staged debates that were apparently free, but in fact closed by the scenarist/director on ideologically specific notes, this article concludes that Ray's reputation as an all-forgiving, ‘everybody-has-his-reasons’ humanist is based on simplistic or even tendentious readings of his work

    Non-Minimal Warm Inflation and Perturbations on the Warped DGP Brane with Modified Induced Gravity

    We construct a warm inflation model with inflaton field non-minimally coupled to induced gravity on a warped DGP brane. We incorporate possible modification of the induced gravity on the brane in the spirit of f(R)f(R)-gravity. We study cosmological perturbations in this setup. In the case of two field inflation such as warm inflation, usually entropy perturbations are generated. While it is expected that in the case of one field inflation these perturbations to be removed, we show that even in the absence of the radiation field, entropy perturbations are generated in our setup due to non-minimal coupling and modification of the induced gravity.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, Accepted by Gen.
