Research Notes : United States : Measured and predicted yield response of soybeans to simulated acid rain

    Get PDF
Modern soybean cultivars in the U.S. are highly related within the northern and within the southern maturity groups and they trace their genetic constitution to a small number of ancestral lines. On the other hand, there is much less genetic relationship between northern cultivars and southern cultivars. Examples of this can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the ancestral relationships among selected lines and cultivars developed from the northern and southern germplasm pools, respectively

Irradiation of benzene molecules by ion-induced and light-induced intense fields

    Get PDF
Benzene, with its sea of delocalized π\pi-electrons in the valence orbitals, is identified as an example of a class of molecules that enable establishment of the correspondence between intense ion-induced and laser-light-induced fields in experiments that probe ionization dynamics in temporal regimes spanning the attosecond and picosecond ranges.Comment: 4 ps figure

Omega 3, 6, 9 Enhanced Goat Meat (Omega-Chevon) from Flaxseed and Canola Fed Meat Goats

    Get PDF
With growing obesity and cardiovascular disease concerns, the meat industry aims to reduce fat content in meat products. Currently Omega Fatty Acid (FA) enhanced beef and eggs are being marketed in the US, but Omega enhanced goat meat (Omega-Chevon) has not been developed. Meat goats were fed ground flaxseed and canola supplemented feed for 90 days. There were no palatability, weight, or health issues in meat goats fed canola and flaxseed supplemented feed. Chevon from goats fed canola and flaxseed had significant (

Low-Temperature Growth of Carbon Nanotube Forests Consisting of Tubes with Narrow Inner Spacing Using Co/Al/Mo Catalyst on Conductive Supports.

    Get PDF
We grow dense carbon nanotube forests at 450 °C on Cu support using Co/Al/Mo multilayer catalyst. As a partial barrier layer for the diffusion of Co into Mo, we apply very thin Al layer with the nominal thickness of 0.50 nm between Co and Mo. This Al layer plays an important role in the growth of dense CNT forests, partially preventing the Co-Mo interaction. The forests have an average height of ∼300 nm and a mass density of 1.2 g cm(-3) with tubes exhibiting extremely narrow inner spacing. An ohmic behavior is confirmed between the forest and Cu support with the lowest resistance of ∼8 kΩ. The forest shows a high thermal effusivity of 1840 J s(-0.5) m(-2) K(-1), and a thermal conductivity of 4.0 J s(-1) m(-1) K(-1), suggesting that these forests are useful for heat dissipation devices. This work has been funded by the European projects Technotubes and Grafol. Electron attachment to valence-excited CO

    Get PDF
The possibility of electron attachment to the valence 3Π^{3}\Pi state of CO is examined using an {\it ab initio} bound-state multireference configuration interaction approach. The resulting resonance has 4Σ^{4}\Sigma^{-} symmetry; the higher vibrational levels of this resonance state coincide with, or are nearly coincident with, levels of the parent a3Πa^{3}\Pi state. Collisional relaxation to the lowest vibrational levels in hot plasma situations might yield the possibility of a long-lived CO^- state.Comment: Revtex file + postscript file for one figur

A multi-wavelength analysis of BL Her stars: Models versus Observations

We present new theoretical period--luminosity (PL) and period--radius (PR) relations at multiple wavelengths (Johnson--Cousins--Glass and {\sl Gaia} passbands) for a fine grid of BL~Herculis models computed using {\sc mesa-rsp}. The non-linear models were computed for periods typical of BL~Her stars, i.e. 1P(days)41\leq P ({\rm days}) \leq4, covering a wide range of input parameters: metallicity (-2.0 dex \leq [Fe/H] \leq 0.0 dex), stellar mass (0.5--0.8 M_{\odot}), luminosity (50--300 L_{\odot}) and effective temperature (full extent of the instability strip; in steps of 50K). We investigate the impact of four sets of convection parameters on multi-wavelength properties. Most empirical relations match well with theoretical relations from the BL~Her models computed using the four sets of convection parameters. No significant metallicity effects are seen in the PR relations. Another important result from our grid of BL~Her models is that it supports combining PL relations of RR Lyrae and Type~II Cepheids together as an alternative to classical Cepheids for the extragalactic distance scale calibration.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings for IAUS376 'At the cross-roads of astrophysics and cosmology: Period-luminosity relations in the 2020s', Budapest, April 202

The propensity of molecules to spatially align in intense light fields

    Get PDF
The propensity of molecules to spatially align along the polarization vector of intense, pulsed light fields is related to readily-accessible parameters (molecular polarizabilities, moment of inertia, peak intensity of the light and its pulse duration). Predictions can now be made of which molecules can be spatially aligned, and under what circumstances, upon irradiation by intense light. Accounting for both enhanced ionization and hyperpolarizability, it is shown that {\it all} molecules can be aligned, even those with the smallest static polarizability, when subjected to the shortest available laser pulses (of sufficient intensity).Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to be submitted to PR
