Self-similar magnetoresistance of Fibonacci ultrathin magnetic films
We study numerically the magnetic properties (magnetization and
magnetoresistance) of ultra-thin magnetic films (Fe/Cr) grown following the
Fibonacci sequence. We use a phenomenological model which includes Zeeman,
cubic anisotropy, bilinear and biquadratic exchange energies. Our physical
parameters are based on experimental data recently reported, which contain
biquadratic exchange coupling with magnitude comparable to the bilinear
exchange coupling. When biquadratic exchange coupling is sufficiently large a
striking self-similar pattern emerges.Comment: 5 pages, 5 EPS figures, REVTeX, accepted for publication in Phys.

Vacuum Polarization for a Massless Spin-1/2 Field in the Global Monopole Spacetime at Nonzero Temperature
In this paper we present the effects produced by the temperature in the
renormalized vacuum expectation value of the zero-zero component of the
energy-momentum tensor associated with massless left-handed spinor field in the
pointlike global monopole spacetime. In order to develop this calculation we
had to obtain the Euclidean thermal Green function in this background. Because
the expression obtained for the thermal energy density cannot be expressed in a
closed form, its explicit dependence on the temperature is not completely
evident. So, in order to obtain concrete information about its thermal
behavior, we develop a numerical analysis of our result in the high-temperature
limit for specific values of the parameter which codify the presence
of the monopole.Comment: 22 pages, LaTex format, 5 figure
Vacuum Polarization by a Magnetic Flux Tube at Finite Temperature in the Cosmic String Spacetime
In this paper we analyse the effect produced by the temperature in the vacuum
polarization associated with charged massless scalar field in the presence of
magnetic flux tube in the cosmic string spacetime. Three different
configurations of magnetic fields are taken into account: a homogeneous
field inside the tube, a field proportional to and a
cylindrical shell with -function. In these three cases, the axis of the
infinitely long tube of radius coincides with the cosmic string. Because
the complexity of this analysis in the region inside the tube, we consider the
thermal effect in the region outside. In order to develop this analysis, we
construct the thermal Green function associated with this system for the three
above mentioned situations considering points in the region outside the tube.
We explicitly calculate in the high-temperature limit, the thermal average of
the field square and the energy-momentum tensor.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur
Self-Forces on Electric and Magnetic Linear Sources in the Space-Time of a Cosmic String
In this paper we calculate the magnetic and electric self-forces, induced by
the conical structure of a cosmic string space-time, on a long straight wire
which presents either a constant current or a linear charge density. We also
show how these self-forces are related by a Lorentz tranformation and, in this
way, explain what two different inertial observers detect in their respective
frames.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, to be published in Phys. Rev. D
Influence of açai fruits (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) conservation on the acceptance of açai drink.
Influence of açai fruits (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) conservation on the acceptance of açai drink.
The açai drink is consumed habitually by populations of northern Brazil, but one of the major bottlenecks in the production of this drink is the seasonality of fruit production. Hence the needs to study the influence of cold storage on the transport of fruits from distant locations, such as the archipelago of Bailique (AP, Brazil) until the consumer centers. In this context, fruits collected and packaged under refrigeration and room temperatures were transported by boat for twelve hours and were subsequently processed in a mixer. Sensory analysis was performed in two consecutive days and the samples were stored under refrigeration. This analysis was performed by affective method with global acceptance (n=54) and the samples presented in a balanced way. It was used a hedonic scale with 9 points, ranging from like extremely (9) to dislike extremely (1). The results show that cold storage of the fruits affected significantly (p=0.002467) the acceptance of beverages in both two days of sensory evaluation. On the first day, the drink originated from fruits transported at cold storage received note 8 (liked a lot), while the drink from fruits at room temperature reached grade 7 (like moderately). On the second day of evaluation, the drink from refrigerated fruits received note 7 (like moderately) and drink from fruits stored at room temperature obtained note 5 (indifferent). Considering the type of preservation of fruits, no sensory difference was detected between the drinks from refrigerated fruits served on the two consecutive days, as well as no significant difference in drink of fruits transported at room temperature in this same period. It was concluded that açai fruits collected in regions distant from the consumer center, but kept under refrigeration, produce a drink with a considerable acceptance level, and they could be an alternative for supply of raw material during the off season.
Comment on "On the temperature dependence of the Casimir effect"
Recently, Brevik et al. [Phys. Rev. E 71, 056101 (2005)] adduced arguments
against the traditional approach to the thermal Casimir force between real
metals and in favor of one of the alternative approaches. The latter assumes
zero contribution from the transverse electric mode at zero frequency in
qualitative disagreement with unity as given by the thermal quantum field
theory for ideal metals. Those authors claim that their approach is consistent
with experiments as well as with thermodynamics. We demonstrate that these
conclusions are incorrect. We show specifically that their results are
contradicted by four recent experiments and also violate the third law of
thermodynamics (the Nernst heat theorem).Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, changed in accordance with the final published

Vacuum Polarization in the Spacetime of a Scalar-Tensor Cosmic String
We study the vacuum polarization effect in the spacetime generated by a
magnetic flux cosmic string in the framework of a scalar-tensor gravity. The
vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor of a conformally
coupled scalar field are calculated. The dilaton's contribution to the vacuum
polarization effect is shown explicitly.Comment: 11 pages, LATEX file, 2 eps figure
