    Wireless energy transfer by means of inductive coupling for dairy cow health monitoring

    The increase of herd sizes hinders the capability of the dairy farmer to timely detect illnesses. Therefore, automatic health monitoring systems are deployed, but due to their high energy consumption, the application possibilities remain limited. In this work, a wireless, inductive charging solution for dairy cow monitoring is designed. This system is mounted at the eating trough, and the amount of energy transferred each eating turn is determined experimentally. For the first time, inductive wireless power transfer is used to charge on-body sensor networks for cattle. Measurements at a research farm on 40 dairy cows show an average energy transfer of 96 J per meal, for an average eating time of 160 s. It is demonstrated that inductive power transfer is a viable technology to resolve the energy provision challenge for the automatic and real-time health monitoring of dairy cows

    Non-Linear Effect of Government Debt on Public Expenditure in Nigeria: Insight from Bootstrap ARDL Procedure

    This study employs the bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach alongside the dynamic ARDL simulations technique to investigate the non-linear effect of public debt on public expenditure in Nigeria during the 1981–2020 period. The result of the bootstrap bounds test illustrates the presence of a long-term relationship between public expenditure and public debt (along with oil rents, output growth and urbanisation). Further, the estimation results indicate that the effect of public debt on public expenditure is non-linear. In particular, public expenditure increases at early stages of rising public debt but declines at latter phases when public debt grows beyond specific threshold. This empirical outcome is further validated by the dynamic ARDL simulations approach which shows a significant decline in predicted public expenditure after short-term expansion due to counterfactual shock in public debt. Thus, policies which diversify public revenue from oil production and a reversal of the rising trend in public debt are recommended to avert the adverse welfare implications of declining public expenditure

    Recommending anchor points in structure-preserving hypertext document retrieval

    Traditional WWW search engines index and recommend individual Web pages to assist users in locating relevant documents. Users are often overwhelmed by the large answer set recommended by the search engines. The logical starting point of the hyper-document is thus hidden among the large basket of matching pages. Users need to spend a lot of effort browsing through the pages to locate the starting point, a very time consuming process. This paper studies the anchor point indexing problem. The anchor points of a given user query is a small set of key pages from which the larger set of documents that are relevant to the query can be easily reached. The use of anchor points help solve the problems of huge answer set and low precision suffered by most search engines by considering the hyper-link structures of the relevant documents, and by providing a summary view of the result set.published_or_final_versio

    Intelligent agents for matching information providers and consumers on the World-Wide-Web

    In this paper, we discuss the various issues in designing intelligent software systems to assist world-wide-web users in locating relevant information. We identify a number of key components in such intelligent systems. These include a web document database management system, a client-based goal-directed search engine, an intelligent learning agent which discovers users' topics of interest by studying their browsing behavior, and an intelligent agent which monitors `hot' web sites. We give examples and suggestions on how these components are designed and implemented.     Does Financial Inclusion Reduce Poverty in Niger State? Evidence from Logistic Regression Technique

    This study employs the logistic regression method to examine the effect of financial inclusion on the level of poverty in Niger State of Nigeria based on cross-sectional data randomly collected from 624 respondents across 224 towns and villages in 12 local government areas (LGAs) of the state. The estimation results illustrate that financial inclusion (proxied by bank account ownership, including access to bank, credit, and mobile phone) is significantly and negatively related to the level of poverty. This empirical outcome is further validated by the results of the Probit regression technique which show a significant negative relationship between financial inclusion and poverty in the state. Based on these empirical findings, the study recommends policies which include broadening bank coverage, softening credit requirements, and enhancement of people’s access to mobile phone and internet services in rural areas of Niger state

    Visualizing Poiseuille flow of hydrodynamic electrons

    Hydrodynamics is a general description for the flow of a fluid, and is expected to hold even for fundamental particles such as electrons when inter-particle interactions dominate. While various aspects of electron hydrodynamics were revealed in recent experiments, the fundamental spatial structure of hydrodynamic electrons, the Poiseuille flow profile, has remained elusive. In this work, we provide the first real-space imaging of Poiseuille flow of an electronic fluid, as well as visualization of its evolution from ballistic flow. Utilizing a scanning nanotube single electron transistor, we image the Hall voltage of electronic flow through channels of high-mobility graphene. We find that the profile of the Hall field across the channel is a key physical quantity for distinguishing ballistic from hydrodynamic flow. We image the transition from flat, ballistic field profiles at low temperature into parabolic field profiles at elevated temperatures, which is the hallmark of Poiseuille flow. The curvature of the imaged profiles is qualitatively reproduced by Boltzmann calculations, which allow us to create a 'phase diagram' that characterizes the electron flow regimes. Our results provide long-sought, direct confirmation of Poiseuille flow in the solid state, and enable a new approach for exploring the rich physics of interacting electrons in real space

    Why isn’t flow flowing? Metatheoretical issues in explanations of flow.

    A flow state describes intrinsically rewarding experiences of complete absorption in a task. While descriptive accounts of flow have gained prominence in “popular” psychology, scientific research has reached a crisis point due to perceived limitations of current theoretical explanations for the experience. Here, we evaluate key metatheoretical frameworks underpinning previous explanations of flow and situate the need for reconsidering the ontological status of flow experiences and the causal entailments that might be needed to explain them. We consider the possibility that the subject–object dualism implied, and the organismic asymmetry apparent in prevalent metatheoretical frameworks, may create intractable problems for explanations of flow. Finally, the suitability of the ecological metatheory and eco-physical variables for explaining flow experiences is discussed
