Identified hadron production at high transverse momenta in p+p collisions at sqrt(NN) = 200 GeV in STAR

We report the transverse momentum (pT) distributions for identified charged pions, protons and anti-protons using events triggered by high deposit energy in the Barrel Electro-Magnetic Calorimeter (BEMC) from p + p collisions at psNN = 200 GeV. The spectra are measured around mid-rapidity (|y|<0.5) over the range of 3<pT<15 GeV/c with particle identification (PID) by the relativistic ionization energy loss (rdE/dx) in the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) in the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). The charged pion, proton and anti-proton spectra at high pT are compared with published results from minimum bias triggered events and the Next-Leading-Order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations (DSS, KKP and AKK 2008). In addition, we present the particle ratios of pi-/pi+, pbar/p, p/pi+ and pbar/pi- in p + p collisions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Hot Quark 2008 proceedin

Direct photons in d+Au collisions at s_(NN)**(1/2)=200GeV with STAR

Results are presented of an ongoing analysis of direct photon production in s_(NN)=200GeV deuteron-gold collisions with the STAR experiment at RHIC. A significant excess of direct photons is observed near mid-rapidity 0<y<1 and found to be consistent with next-to-leading order pQCD calculations including the contribution from fragmentation photons.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, HotQuarks 200

    Quarkonia Measurements with STAR

We report results on quarkonium production from the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). J/psi spectra in p+p and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV with transverse momenta in the range of 0.5-14 GeV/c and 5-8 GeV/c, respectively, are presented. We find that for p_T > 5 GeV/c yields in p+p collisions are consistent with those in minimum-bias Cu+Cu collisions scaled with the respective number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. In this range the nuclear modification factor, R_AA, is measured to be 0.9+-0.2(stat). For the first time at RHIC, high-p_T J/psi-hadron correlations were studied in p+p collisions. Implications from our measurements on J/psi production mechanisms, constraints on open bottom yields, and J/psi dissociation mechanisms at high-p_T are discussed. In addition, we give a brief status of measurements of Upsilon production in p+p and Au+Au collisions and present projections of future quarkonia measurements based on an upgrades to the STAR detector and increased luminosity achieved through stochastic cooling of RHIC.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Parton energy loss limits and shadowing in Drell-Yan dimuon production

    Get PDF
A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per nucleon for an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on Be, Fe and W targets is reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target parton momentum fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in deep-inelastic scattering. The cross section ratios as a function of the incident parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks passing through a cold nucleus

Measurement of the Light Antiquark Flavor Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea

    Get PDF
A precise measurement of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on hydrogen and deuterium targets is reported. Over 140,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs with dimuon mass M_{mu+ mu-} >= 4.5 GeV/c^2 were recorded. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dbar) to anti-up (ubar) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-x. A strong x dependence is observed in the ratio dbar/ubar, showing substantial enhancement of dbar with respect to ubar for x<0.2. This result is in fair agreement with recent parton distribution parameterizations of the sea. For x>0.2, the observed dbar/ubar ratio is much nearer unity than given by the parameterizations.Comment: REVTeX, to be published in Phys. Rev. Let

dbar/ubar Asymmetry and the Origin of the Nucleon Sea

The Drell-Yan cross section ratios, σ(p+d)/σ(p+p)\sigma(p+d)/\sigma(p+p), measured in Fermilab E866, have led to the first determination of dˉ(x)/uˉ(x)\bar d(x) / \bar u(x), dˉ(x)−uˉ(x)\bar d(x) - \bar u(x), and the integral of dˉ(x)−uˉ(x)\bar d(x) - \bar u(x) for the proton over the range 0.02≤x≤0.3450.02 \le x \le 0.345. The E866 results are compared with predictions based on parton distribution functions and various theoretical models. The relationship between the E866 results and the NMC measurement of the Gottfried integral is discussed. The agreement between the E866 results and models employing virtual mesons indicates these non-perturbative processes play an important role in the origin of the dˉ\bar d, uˉ\bar u asymmetry in the nucleon sea.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, ReVTe

Nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering analysis to 2.5 GeV

A partial-wave analysis of NN elastic scattering data has been completed. This analysis covers an expanded energy range, from threshold to a laboratory kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV, in order to include recent elastic pp scattering data from the EDDA collaboration. The results of both single-energy and energy-dependent analyses are described.Comment: 23 pages of text. Postscript files for the figures are available from ftp://clsaid.phys.vt.edu/pub/said/n

Measurement of Differences Between J/Psi and Psi' Suppression in p-A Collisions

Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/Psi and Psi' production for 800 GeV/c protons incident on heavy relative to light nuclear targets have been made with very broad coverage in xF and pT. The observed suppression is smallest at xF values of 0.25 and below and increases at larger values of xF. It is also strongest at small pT. Substantial differences between the Psi' and J/Psi are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for the Psi' is stronger than that for the J/Psi for xF near zero, but becomes comparable to that for the J/Psi for xF > 0.6.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by PR

Improved Measurement of the dˉ/uˉ\bar d / \bar u Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea

Measurements of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 \rm{GeV/c} proton beam incident on liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets are reported. Approximately 360,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs remained after all cuts on the data. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dˉ\bar{d}) to anti-up (uˉ\bar{u}) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-xx. These results confirm previous measurements by E866 and extend them to lower xx. From these data, (dˉ−uˉ)(\bar{d}-\bar{u}) and ∫(dˉ−uˉ)dx\int(\bar{d}-\bar{u})dx are evaluated for 0.015<x<0.350.015<x<0.35. These results are compared with parameterizations of various parton distribution functions, models and experimental results from NA51, NMC, and HERMES.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure
