Inflammatory Mediators Release in Urine from Mice Injected with Crotalus durissus terrificus Venom

In this study, we investigated in groups of female BALB/c mice injected with Crotalus durissus terrificus venom (Cdt) the renal function based on creatinine clearance, percentage of fractional excretion cytokines and histological examination of renal tissue. Cdt caused renal alterations that induced proteinuria during the initial hours post-venom and reduced creatinine clearance 15 min. up to 2 hours post-venom administration. In urine from mice injected with Cdt induced a decrease in IL-4 levels. More pronounced increments of IL-5, IL-6 and IFN-γ were observed after 15 and 30 min, respectively. The highest levels of TNF and IL-10 were observed at 1 and 4 hs, respectively. The ratios of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in animals injected with Cdt, which may be manifested in the inflammatory status during the envenoming. In groups of animals treated with Cdt were observed a decreasing in creatinine clearance and its effect on glomerular filtration rate was accompanied by decreased fractional excretion of cytokines and morphologic disturbances. This loss of change selectively in envenomation could thus explain why the relatively excretion of cytokines is reduced while of total proteins increases. In conclusion the fractional excretion of cytokines is significantly reduced in mice injected with Cdt, despite proteinuria

Fabrication and Electrical Characterization of Translucent Bi 12

The production of high-density Bi12TiO20 ceramics, their transmission spectrum, and impedance features are reported. The samples were synthesized at 700°C/6 h and sintered at 800°C/3 h. This procedure yielded translucent ceramics with relative density of 99.2±0.5% and average grain size of 3.1±1.6 μm. Samples with 0.5 mm thickness were translucent with optical transmission of about 30% at 800 nm. The electrical and dielectric properties of the high-density ceramics were studied and compared with those measured for samples with lower density and also with the literature about Bi12TiO20 single crystals. The activation energy for the conduction process in high-density ceramic was 0.99 eV, and the dielectric permittivity was 40 at 200°C. These values are comparable to those reported for single crystals

A Língua Azul é uma doença re-emergente que causa aborto em vacas, queda do desempenho reprodutivo, perda de condição corporal e redução na produção e leite. A ocorrência dessa doença está relacionada à presença de vetores transmissores. Backgrounds: The aim of this study is identify the main morphological patterns of the pancreas in AIDS patients in use of Higly Active Antiretorviral Therapy (HAART). Methods: We conducted a cross sectional study in the year of 2010. The inclusion criteria were patients older than 18 years who died of AIDS with the use of HAART (2006–2009) and underwent to autopsy. They were compared with a group of 109 patients who died of AIDS in 1995 before the HAART therapy. All the autopsies were made in the Death Verification Service of São Paulo. Results: The HAART group presented pancreas abnormalities lighter than no HAART users. In the HAART group, histology shows: reduction of zymogen granules in the acinar cells (ZG) higher percentage of cases, “dysplasia-like” presents lower and pancreatic acinar atrophy, presents higher percentage of cases compared to no HAART group. The exocrine pancreas in treated patients was distinguished by the high level of atrophy, sharp reduction of zymogen granules and high level of apoptosis, reflecting degeneration and lower level of protein-caloric malnutrition. Conclusions: The islets of Langerhans in HAART group were increased in number and volume and with high level of nuclear dysplasia. The antiviral therapy and a longer survival resulted in a higher atrophy and reduction of enzymes, increasing the apoptosis and generated important changes in the pancreatic islets, probably resulting in clinical laboratory repercussion. We found no evidence of pancreatic histopathological lesions secondary to antiretroviral therapy
