Resumming the color-octet contribution to e+ e- -> J/psi + X
Recent observations of the spectrum of J/psi produced in e+ e- collisions at
the Upsilon(4S) resonance are in conflict with fixed-order calculations using
the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) effective field theory. One problem is that
leading order color-octet mechanisms predict an enhancement of the cross
section for J/psi with maximal energy that is not observed in the data.
However, in this region of phase space large perturbative corrections (Sudakov
logarithms) as well as enhanced nonperturbative effects are important. In this
paper we use the newly developed Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) to
systematically include these effects. We find that these corrections
significantly broaden the color-octet contribution to the J/psi spectrum. Our
calculation employs a one-stage renormalization group evolution rather than the
two-stage evolution used in previous SCET calculations. We give a simple
argument for why the two methods yield identical results to lowest order in the
SCET power counting.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figure
Penguins leaving the pole: bound-state effects in B decaying to K* + photon
Applying perturbative QCD methods recently seen to give a good description of
the two body hadronic decays of the B meson, we address the question of
bound-state effects on the decay B into K* + gamma. Consistent with most
analyses, we demonstrate that gluonic penguins, with photonic bremsstrahlung
off a quark, change the decay rate by only a few percent. However, explicit
off-shell b-quark effects normally discarded are found to be large in
amplitude, although in the standard model accidents of phase minimize the
effect on the rate. Using an asymptotic distribution amplitude for the K* and
just the standard model, we can obtain a branching ratio of a few times

Chargino Contributions in Asymmetry
CP asymmetry in decay is studied in a special context of
supersymmetry theories, in which the charginos play an important role. We find
that in addition to the gluino, chargino can also make large contributions to
CP asymmetry in decay. After considering the constraints from
decay, we study three special scenarios: (a). Large mixing on
left-handed charm and top squarks (LL mixing); (b). Large mixing on
right-handed charm and top squarks (RR mixing); (c). Large mixing on
left-handed charm and top squarks plus right-handed charm and top squarks (LL +
RR mixing). We show quantitatively that because of large squark mixing within
second and third generations, an (1) effect on CP violation in is possible
New Source of CP violation in B physics ?
In this talk we discuss how the down type left-right squark mixing in
Supersymmetry can induce a new source of CP violation in the time dependent
asymmtries in B --> phi K process. We use QCD improved factorization process to
calculate the hadronic matrix element for the process and find the allowed
parameter space for and , the magnitude and phase of the down
type LR(RL) squark mixing parameter . In the same allowed
regin we calculate the expected CP asymmtries in the

Sterile neutrino production via active-sterile oscillations: the quantum Zeno effect
We study several aspects of the kinetic approach to sterile neutrino
production via active-sterile mixing. We obtain the neutrino propagator in the
medium including self-energy corrections up to , from which
we extract the dispersion relations and damping rates of the propagating modes.
The dispersion relations are the usual ones in terms of the index of refraction
in the medium, and the damping rates are where
is the active neutrino scattering rate and
is the mixing angle in the medium. We provide a generalization of
the transition probability in the \emph{medium from expectation values in the
density matrix}: and
study the conditions for its quantum Zeno suppression directly in real time. We
find the general conditions for quantum Zeno suppression, which for sterile neutrinos with \emph{may
only be} fulfilled near an MSW resonance. We discuss the implications for
sterile neutrino production and argue that in the early Universe the wide
separation of relaxation scales far away from MSW resonances suggests the
breakdown of the current kinetic approach.Comment: version to appear in JHE
Zoneamento agroecológico para a região de Ribeirão Preto utilizando um sistema de informações geográficas.
Objetivando contribuir com a metodologia de identificação de potencialidades de uso das terras, este trabalho apresenta uma proposta de zoneamento agroecológico da quadrícula de Ribeirão Preto, SP, localizada entre as coordenadas de 21o00'S a 21o30'S e 47o30'W a 48o00'W, com base em características de solo, relevo e clima, utilizando-se de um Sistema de Informações Geográficas. Para caracterizar o regime térmico-hídrico da área utilizou-se os dados de temperatura do ar e de chuva, de 22 localidades, referentes ao período de 1967 a 1996. De acordo com os critérios adotados, quanto a capacidade de uso das terras, o zoneamento identificou seis unidades de utilização da área: agricultura (I); agricultura (II); agricultura (III); pecuária; agrossilvicultura e preservação. As principais conclusões referentes à área de estudo foram: o regime térmico-hídrico é praticamente homogêneo, a vocação dominante é para agricultura (I) representando aproximadamente 191.118 hectares, correspondentes a 66,3% da área e cerca de 82,5% das terras possuem vocação para agropecuária e 10,4% devem ser preservadas ou utilizadas seguindo técnicas conservacionistas
Exploring flavor structure of supersymmetry breaking from rare B decays and unitarity triangle
We study effects of supersymmetric particles in various rare B decay
processes as well as in the unitarity triangle analysis. We consider three
different supersymmetric models, the minimal supergravity, SU(5) SUSY GUT with
right-handed neutrinos, and the minimal supersymmetric standard model with U(2)
flavor symmetry. In the SU(5) SUSY GUT with right-handed neutrinos, we consider
two cases of the mass matrix of the right-handed neutrinos. We calculate direct
and mixing-induced CP asymmetries in the b to s gamma decay and CP asymmetry in
B_d to phi K_S as well as the B_s--anti-B_s mixing amplitude for the unitarity
triangle analysis in these models. We show that large deviations are possible
for the SU(5) SUSY GUT and the U(2) model. The pattern and correlations of
deviations from the standard model will be useful to discriminate the different
SUSY models in future B experiments.Comment: revtex4, 36 pages, 10 figure
Quenched charmonium spectrum
We study charmonium using the standard relativistic formalism in the quenched
approximation, on a set of lattices with isotropic lattice spacings ranging
from 0.1 to 0.04 fm. We concentrate on the calculation of the hyperfine
splitting between eta_c and J/psi, aiming for a controlled continuum
extrapolation of this quantity. The splitting extracted from the
non-perturbatively improved clover Dirac operator shows very little dependence
on the lattice spacing for fm. The dependence is much stronger for
Wilson and tree-level improved clover operators, but they still yield
consistent extrapolations if sufficiently fine lattices, fm (), are used. Our result for the hyperfine splitting is
77(2)(6) MeV (where Sommer's parameter, r_0, is used to fix the scale). This
value remains about 30% below experiment. Dynamical fermions and OZI-forbidden
diagrams both contribute to the remainder. Results for the eta_c and J/psi wave

B --> Phi K_S and Supersymmetry
The rare decay B --> Phi K_S is a well-known probe of physics beyond the
Standard Model because it arises only through loop effects yet has the same
time-dependent CP asymmetry as B --> Psi K_S. Motivated by recent data
suggesting new physics in B --> Phi K_S, we look to supersymmetry for possible
explanations, including contributions mediated by gluino loops and by Higgs
bosons. Chirality-preserving LL and RR gluino contributions are generically
small, unless gluinos and squarks masses are close to the current lower bounds.
Higgs contributions are also too small to explain a large asymmetry if we
impose the current upper limit on B(B_s --> mu mu). On the other hand,
chirality-flipping LR and RL gluino contributions can provide sizable effects
and while remaining consistent with related results in B --> Psi K_S, Delta
M_s, B --> X_s gamma and other processes. We discuss how the LR and RL
insertions can be distinguished using other observables, and we provide a
string-based model and other estimates to show that the needed sizes of mass

Standard Model Matrix Elements for Neutral B-Meson Mixing and Associated Decay Constants
We present results of quenched lattice calculations of the matrix elements
relevant for B_d-\bar B_d and B_s-\bar B_s mixing in the Standard Model.
Results for the corresponding SU(3)-breaking ratios, which can be used to
constrain or determine |V_{td}|, are also given. The calculations are performed
at two values of the lattice spacing, corresponding to \beta = 6.0 and \beta =
6.2, with quarks described by a mean-field-improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert
action. As a by-product, we obtain the leptonic decay constants of B and D
mesons. We also present matrix elements relevant for D^0-\bar D^0 mixing. Our
