    The MINERν\nuA Data Acquisition System and Infrastructure

    MINERν\nuA (Main INjector ExpeRiment ν\nu-A) is a new few-GeV neutrino cross section experiment that began taking data in the FNAL NuMI (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Neutrinos at the Main Injector) beam-line in March of 2010. MINERν\nuA employs a fine-grained scintillator detector capable of complete kinematic characterization of neutrino interactions. This paper describes the MINERν\nuA data acquisition system (DAQ) including the read-out electronics, software, and computing architecture.Comment: 34 pages, 16 figure

    Medium effects in high energy heavy-ion collisions

    The change of hadron properties in dense matter based on various theoretical approaches are reviewed. Incorporating these medium effects in the relativistic transport model, which treats consistently the change of hadron masses and energies in dense matter via the scalar and vector fields, heavy-ion collisions at energies available from SIS/GSI, AGS/BNL, and SPS/CERN are studied. This model is seen to provide satisfactory explanations for the observed enhancement of kaon, antikaon, and antiproton yields as well as soft pions in the transverse direction from the SIS experiments. In the AGS heavy-ion experiments, it can account for the enhanced K+/π+K^+/\pi^+ ratio, the difference in the slope parameters of the K+K^+ and KK^- transverse kinetic energy spectra, and the lower apparent temperature of antiprotons than that of protons. This model also provides possible explanations for the observed enhancement of low-mass dileptons, phi mesons, and antilambdas in heavy-ion collisions at SPS energies. Furthermore, the change of hadron properties in hot dense matter leads to new signatures of the quark-gluon plasma to hadronic matter transition in future ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC/BNL.Comment: RevTeX, 65 pages, including 25 postscript figures, invited topical review for Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physic

    Search for associated Higgs boson production using like charge dilepton events in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

    We present a search for associated Higgs boson production in the process p (p) over bar -> W/ZH -> l(+/-)l'(+/-) + X in ee, e mu, and mu mu final states. The search is based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV corresponding to 5.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. We require two isolated leptons (electrons or muons) with the same electric charge and additional kinematic requirements. No significant excess above background is observed, and we set 95% C. L. observed (expected) upper limits on ratio of the production cross section to the standard model prediction of 6.4 (7.3) for a Higgs boson mass of 165 GeV and 13.5 (19.8) for a mass of 115 GeV

    Subthreshold antiproton production in proton-carbon reactions

    Data from KEK on subthreshold antiproton as well as on pi(+-) and K(+-) production in proton-nucleus reactions are described at projectile energies between 3.5 and 12.0 GeV. We use a model which considers a hadron-nucleus reaction as an incoherent sum over collisions of the projectile with a varying number of target nucleons. It samples complete events and allows thus for the simultaneous consideration of all particle species measured. The overall reproduction of the data is quite satisfactory. It is shown that the contributions from the interaction of the projectile with groups of several target nucleons are decisive for the description of subthreshold production. Since the collective features of subthreshold production become especially significant far below the threshold, the results are extrapolated down to COSY energies. It is concluded that an antiproton measurement at ANKE-COSY should be feasible, if the high background of other particles can be efficiently suppressed.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, gzipped tar file, submitted to J.     Fixed-t subtracted dispersion relations for Compton scattering off the nucleon

    We present fixed-tt subtracted dispersion relations for Compton scattering off the nucleon at energies EγE_\gamma \leq 500 MeV, as a formalism to extract the nucleon polarizabilities with a minimum of model dependence. The subtracted dispersion integrals are mainly saturated by πN\pi N intermediate states in the ss-channel γNπNγN\gamma N \to \pi N \to \gamma N and ππ\pi \pi intermediate states in the tt-channel γγππNNˉ\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi \to N \bar N. For the subprocess γγππ\gamma \gamma \to \pi \pi, we construct a unitarized amplitude and find a good description of the available data. We show results for Compton scattering using the subtracted dispersion relations and display the sensitivity on the scalar polarizability difference αβ\alpha - \beta and the backward spin polarizability γπ\gamma_\pi, which enter directly as fit parameters in the present formalism

    Measurement of the Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton

    The Compton scattering cross section on the proton has been measured at laboratory angles of 90^\circ and 135^\circ using tagged photons in the energy range 70--100 MeV and simultaneously using untagged photons in the range 100--148~MeV. With the aid of dispersion relations, these cross sections were used to extract the electric and magnetic polarizabilities, αˉ\bar{\alpha} and βˉ\bar{\beta} respectively, of the proton. We find αˉ+βˉ=(15.0±2.9±1.1±0.4)×104fm3,\bar{\alpha}+\bar{\beta} = ( 15.0 \pm 2.9 \pm 1.1 \pm 0.4 ) \times 10^{-4} \: {\rm fm}^3, in agreement with a model-independent dispersion sum rule, and αˉβˉ=(10.8±1.1±1.4±1.0)×104fm3,\bar{\alpha}-\bar{\beta} = ( 10.8 \pm 1.1 \pm 1.4 \pm 1.0 ) \times 10^{-4} \: {\rm fm}^3, where the errors shown are statistical, systematic, and model-dependent, respectively. A comparison with previous experiments is given and global values for the polarizabilities are extracted.Comment: 35 pages, 11 PostScript figures, uses RevTex 3.

    Pion Generalized Dipole Polarizabilities by Virtual Compton Scattering πeπeγ\pi e \to \pi e\gamma

    We present a calculation of the cross section and the event generator of the reaction πeπeγ\pi e\to \pi e \gamma. This reaction is sensitive to the pion generalized dipole polarizabilities, namely, the longitudinal electric αL(q2)\alpha_L(q^2), the transverse electric αT(q2)\alpha_T(q^2), and the magnetic β(q2)\beta(q^2) which, in the real-photon limit, reduce to the ordinary electric and magnetic polarizabilities αˉ\bar{\alpha} and βˉ\bar{\beta}, respectively. The calculation of the cross section is done in the framework of chiral perturbation theory at O(p4){\cal O}(p^4). A pion VCS event generator has been written which is ready for implementation in GEANT simulation codes or for independent use.Comment: 33 pages, Revtex, 15 figure

    Study of Zγ events and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV

    We present a measurement of the Zγ production cross section and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings for form-factor scales of Λ=750 and 1000 GeV. The measurement is based on 138 (152) candidates in the eeγ (μμγ) final state using 320(290)pb-1 of pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV. The 95% C.L. limits on real and imaginary parts of individual anomalous couplings are |h10,30Z|<0.23, |h20,40Z|<0.020, |h10,30γ|<0.23, and |h20,40γ|<0.019 for Λ=1000GeV. © 2005 The American Physical Society
