Heat Transfer in Turbulent Rayleigh-Benard Convection below the Ultimate Regime
A Rayleigh-B\'enard cell has been designed to explore the Prandtl (Pr)
dependence of turbulent convection in the cross-over range and for
the full range of soft and hard turbulences, up to Rayleigh number . The set-up benefits from the favourable characteristics of cryogenic
helium-4 in fluid mechanics, in-situ fluid property measurements, and special
care on thermometry and calorimetric instrumentation. The cell is cylindrical
with . The effective heat transfer has been
measured with unprecedented accuracy for cryogenic turbulent convection
experiments in this range of Rayleigh numbers. Spin-off of this study include
improved fits of helium thermodynamics and viscosity properties. Three main
results were found. First the dependence exhibits a bimodality of the
flow with difference in for given and . Second, a
systematic study of the side-wall influence reveals a measurable effect on the
heat transfer. Third, the dependence is very small or null : the
absolute value of the average logarithmic slope is smaller
than 0.03 in our range of , which allows to disciminate between
contradictory experiments [Ashkenazi \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev.Lett. 83:3641

Kondo engineering : from single Kondo impurity to the Kondo lattice
In the first step, experiments on a single cerium or ytterbium Kondo impurity
reveal the importance of the Kondo temperature by comparison to other type of
couplings like the hyperfine interaction, the crystal field and the intersite
coupling. The extension to a lattice is discussed. Emphasis is given on the
fact that the occupation number of the trivalent configuration may be the
implicit key variable even for the Kondo lattice. Three phase
diagrams are discussed: CeRuSi, CeRhIn and SmS
Observation of critical slowing down close to a roughening transition
We have measured the times necessary to recover the stable size of a facet of a 4He crystal in a slow growing process, close to the roughening transition of the facet (TR ≅ 215 mK). These times exhibit a critical slowing down from 2 min. far from this transition to 44 min. at a few mK from the transition.
Liquid-solid 4He interface: Kapitza resistance
We have measured the Kapitza resistance RK between liquid and solid 4He, from 100 mK to 0.7 K. We show that R K T3 varies linearly with T-2 for a rough interface and the crystalline anisotropy. The surface tension alone cannot explain the results which are interpreted as indicating an interface inertia. For the facets, the classical result is found : RK T3 = constant.
SURFACE MAGNETIC RELAXATION - RELATION TO 3He↑ EXPERIMENTS
Nuclear relaxation at the walls of experimental cells is an important lifetime limitation for polarized liquid 3He. However, maximum spin-lattice relaxation times T1 (i.e. the intrinsic values T1 bulk) can be obtained by diffusion limited relaxation or boundary limited relaxation. We present NMR measurements on liquid 3He in confined geometries, where the latter process is dominant. Coating of the walls by 2.7 layers of 3He enhances T1 and the thermal boundary resistance by almost two orders of magnitude at low temperatures.
EXPERIMENTS ON THERMAL PHONON RADIATION INTO QUARTZ SUBSTRATES
Results are presented for the radiation temperature of gold, indium and tin films deposited on a Z cut quartz substrate. A pulse reflection technique developed by Herth and Weis was used for these experiments. In all cases good agreement is found between experiment and the predictions of Little's model calculated on the basis of averages of the appropriate sound velocities. Convincing support for the validity of the present theory of the solid-solid thermal contact resistance is thus obtained, even for the case where one of the solids is quite anisotropic
PHASE DIAGRAM OF 3He AT MELTING PRESSURES AND HIGH MAGNETIC FIELDS
We report pressure measurements on melting 3He in a Pomeranchuk cell precooled to temperatures T ~ 3 mk, in magnetic fields up to 7.2 T. The equilibrium pressures of the A1 and A2 phase transitions of superfluid 3He have been measured ; we have found a negative deviation from the linear PA2 - PA1 vs. H splitting, due to the magnetic ordering of solid 33He. We have obtained the magnetic P(H) phase diagram of solid 3He ; the H(T) phase diagram in high fields can be deduced by using a thermometry based on the A1-A2 splitting. Our results are in agreement with the multiple spin exchange model of solid 3He
